Probably stretched vertically like that because the iPhone 5 is, compared to its predecessor.

I don't think the icons themselves should be given too much attention.

I think Apple only chose those as a "theme" because colorful.

I still think the middle one is Safari, only upside down. The dash of red is the red tip of the pointer on the icon.

I agree, here's what I was thinking. The first few look inverted to me.

Ok, the first few icons seem to be one way up, the rest the other - therefore I deduce that the new iPhone will have a rotatable home screen like the iPad. I'm half being sarcastic/stupid and half expect this to be one of the things that turns out to be true and people get excited about for some reason... ;)

I think the Icons stand for the sections during the keynote...

1. Stock icon = Apple presents data about their business... Just like in the start of every kenote :)
2. Music icon = New iPod nano / shuffle
3. Game center upside down = demo of the new iPod nano
4. ITunes icon = new iTunes / itunes update
5. Mystery icon = new iPhone
6. Mystery icon 2 = ?
7. Music icon = new iPod touch with the bigger screen
8. Game center = demo of the new iPhone / ipod touch
9. Safari icon = All items for online preorder today

Every conference. Every bloody one, gets its banner over analysed.

I remember a few years ago one with a guitar, people were saying hte number of dots and strings represents the software being released and new macs, iphones etc. Never happens.

Clutching at straws, as usual.

ITs just a banner, nothing significant.

+1 on that ;)

It is not random. I assure you that professional designers spend a great deal of time iterating over the various aspects of their design. Designers think about the various ways they can convey the message through visual imagery. They write down different words relating to what they are trying to say through the design. They think about the interactions between the different words. They do research on similar successful design. They develop dozens of thumbnail sketches and rough comps of around 5-10 good ideas. These are whittled down, sometimes combined, sometimes entirely new stuff is added through team collaboration. Once you settle on a concept it's all about tweaking it until it's aesthetically where you need it to be while maintaining a clarity of message and brand identity. In this case, the message was meant to be hidden and subtle, while adhering to the somewhat playful, creative image that has defined Apple for years (look at past event decor). It was probably a joy for the designers to implement this idea knowing that they were hiding the icons in plain sight. And as a testament to their work, it went largely unnoticed online for nearly a day—which is quite a long time in this day and age of instant communication.

I hope I have answered your question. While my answer might not be 100% accurate to the process used at Apple, this is an abbreviated explanation of process based on my experience as a designer. Though sometimes things just come to us—the final output is often far from our first "random" thought once it is iterated and developed into a fully-coherent concept. But is any though truly random? Our very thought patterns have been guided by our experience and interaction with the world around us since birth. But I'll leave that debate to the philosophers in the crowd.

Great explanation and thanks for taking on the people who are so clueless as to how final designs (no matter how simple they look) are arived at.

Folks think we sit around 'drawing' or 'playing with images in Photoshop' all day. Love to see them deal with what we do. These are the sort of people tha continue to cheapen commercial art/design. Fine art, too, for that matter.

Would be surprised if it was as they haven't released the gold master edition yet. I think it will come out the day of iPhone shipments.

they could release the GM tomorrow intent to release iOS 6 this weekend to have all those downloads out of the way when the new hardware launches. Wouldn't want another incident like when they released a new iphone, new iOS and mobile me at the same time and it clogged up the system

If its just taller and not wider, I will be skipping this one and giving the NOKIA 920 or 820 a try.

(...some images...)

The OS , the hardware ....The Camera , All Outstanding. The Screen - Perfecto

Wonderful. Can you take your thread crapping to their forums now?

And yet I do think that Apple does it on purpose. If everyone is posting articles about the banner and what the hidden meaning is they aren't fishing around for other leaks and might miss some big 'one more thing' tidbit.

Exactly. I don't even know how/why this can be on page 1. Perhaps MR should start considering a page 5 for irrelevant news such as this.

This is what probably happened:

1 - Designers were instructed to create something related to iOS and new devices;

2 - they came up to the conclusion that the app colors commonly used in the iOS dock were an interesting combination;

3 - finally, they were informed that the new iDevices are longer-shaped - so the banner was created.

NOTHING else should be "read" beyond the obvious. Unless you originally believed that Paul was dead because of the Sgt. Pepper's cover... ;)

How is my opinion "Thread Crapping" ? ? ?

Oh , I see ......I'm not happy with the idea of a taller iPhone so that makes me the enemy .....Right ?

I got news for ya bub, we don't all have to agree with everything Apple does.

I like Apple products and that's why I get upset when they blunder this hard.

You gotta admit this is a nice phone

And I still have an Air and an iPad so , you'll still be seeing me. ;):)

My comments are important. We don't all have to agree all the time. And you aren't going to loose whatever imaginary "Apple Cred" points you think you have by simply acknowledging a Non-Apple product.

Lets be real. Whats the point in just getting together to kiss Apples ass in a forum ? I know you're going to love anything Apple sells. At least I have a point

Are you serious.

iPhone 5 available in ANY COLOR?

I was thinking it meant that you may be able to order them in any color?

I think it is safe to say that this is over-analyzing the decorations...just a bit
