The one thing that still gives me a glimmer of hope that the iPhone 5 just could surprise us, and that's despite it losing its golden ratios, the "off" placement of the rear camera etc, is that quite simply - it just looks a bit crap.

I mean, ok so Jony Ive has his knighthood now and Steve is gone but does that mean he should give up on good design? This just looks proportionally wrong, it's not appealing to the eye. Forget specs and everything else and what you're left with is a design that doesn't look like Jony Ive would approve to me. There's a reason Apple have used golden ratios so often - they look right, this design does not. Please let this be an elaborate misdirection by Apple and give us something better! :)

I haven't had the chance to read through all the comments yet but seeing this about a million times per thread I felt compelled to share something I noticed over the weekend.

The 4" Droid Bionic has this same ratio. It is the same width as the iPhone 4S but slightly taller. And it felt very comfortable and looked great (size-wise). I think 99% of the people screaming "ugly" will think this is a beautiful design the second they get their hands on one....

Too many previous posts to read through, but just in case no one else has noticed it, the iTunes icon immediately to the right of the upside down Game Center icon) is also upside down. The mostly horizontal line (the "beam") is at the bottom; also note the spacing of the horizontal lines (the "stems") within the circle.

It seems unlikely, given Apple's usual attention to detail, that this would be a mistake that slipped through, but it also seems unlikely to me to that it means anything.

You realize that the S3 is also 16:9, so they will have the scale.... idiot.....

No....people don't like to listen to common sense.

The iP5 will have a smaller bezel than a lot of other phones. If we compare the SCREEN SIZES, they all have the same aspect ration (16:9). And if we compare the phone size itself, what those complaining about seem to want is a thicker bezel along the sides to "even" it out....

If you want to know what this phone will feel like (at least in terms of height relative to the 4S), go check out a Droid Bionic 4". Same screen size, same width as the iPhone 4S and a tad taller. And it wasn't awkward at all.

This blows my mind. Very clever.

Edit: I've looked at this a few times and still cant believe how brilliant this is.

Also: Being that Game Center is upside down, could another new App we haven't seen yet be upside down too?

Are you kidding me? There is nothing even mildly clever or brilliant about this. Artists have been doing this for centuries, to much greater effect, and without the handy photoshop 'transform' tool... just sayin.

Likely Reason For Supposed Upside Down Icons

My best guess for the most certainly deliberate upside down icons in the banner is that it signifies that the new iPhone will be viewable in all orientations (just like the iPad). And the fact that the headphone jack will be relocated to the bottom of the phone just reinforces my theory. By allowing the display to be viewed at all orientations, people can still hold their iPhones with the headphone jack on the top...

Thoughts?

Unrelated

It does appear that the background is indeed stretched iOS icons, but I don't really think it has anything to do with a taller iPhone screen. Just a clever way of making a background.

Maybe the banner is old apps with major upgrades alongside new apps moving from IOS5 to IOS6? Great graphics...

1152x648 what do you think?

Hi, I've been making some calculations. Im a fanboy and a bit too obsessed.
the thing is, iphones until now have not had an exact 3.5 inch screen but about 3.5392 inches. (ppi is 326 of iphone4s)
what i mean with this is that an exact 4 inch with 1136x640 resolution we'll get a ppi of 325.97.... and its unlikely to make an exact 4.00 inch screen.
So if apple only didnt make an exact screen size just like it has been doing until now, making, say for example, a 4.0544 inch screen, the ppi would be 322 ppi with a 1136x640 resolution, and i think it is very possible that they wont make and exact 4.00 inch screen.
Apple wouldnt let the ppi go down for marketing reasons. so i've found a possible solution to this.
a 1152x648 screen resolution is a perfect 16:9 not like 1136x640 (16:9.014) and that makes a difference... actually the 16:9.014 just feels wrong.
a 4.0544 inch screen at 1152x648 would result in a perfect 326 ppi.
and 4.0544 inches is almost exactly 0.5 or more inches larger than the current 3.5392 iphone 4s screen.

why to choose it:
So to have a better 16:9 aspect ratio i think apple would choose the 1152x648 resolution. This also would make the ppi a perfect 326 with a 4.0544 inch screen which is more than 0.5 inches bigger than the iphone 4s.

Why wouldnt they choose 1152x648? Well the only reason is that they'd have to increase 8 pixels horizontally, but i dont think thats a big problem because 8 pixels are almost insignificant at that ppi, and all that apple would need to do is zoom in the apps that werent yet optimized, this zoom wont be noticed with this pixel density, so just like what happened with the transition from the 3gs to the 4, developers will start doing apps in the newer 1152x648 and they can take their time because in the meantime the 640width app will fill the screen being insignificant the pixelation created with the zoom.

After all this make your own conclusion. 1152x648 is a perfect 16:9
everything makes much more sense... just 8 pixels cant justify changing the aspect ratio of a really respected 16:9...

--- Tell me what you think and make me any questions. And please could someone tell me what source said it will be 1136x640 and how truth or secure this is? was it just a rummor? is there any chance of a change?

By the way this is my bet, i bet they introduce a perfect 16:9 1152x648 4 inch screen (4.0544... or so) with a ppi of 326. This is one of the surprises apple is preparing for us and im shure its the best choice of screen to do for them.

--- I calculated the ppi's in this website http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html
--- iphone's screen measurements have been done with my own methods.

sorry if i didnt explain very well but english isnt my first language, again any questions or comments theyll really be appreciated.:D

I am actually hopeful that the banner means this!

With apps as channels. Really wish it is. :)

And you clearly don't know what you're talking about. First of all, the existence of your friend's Nexus 4G is exactly why Apple wouldn't leave out LTE "as part of their money-pumping marketing technique". If they are, that's the stupidest technique I've ever heard of. You know why? BECAUSE YOUR FRIEND ALREADY BOUGHT A NEXUS 4G!!! Do you not see the contradiction of our own post? Apple lost a sale by waiting. They would not intentionally lose the sale unless they realized the product they offered would be sub-par and therefore they would rather not sell it until it meets their standards.

No, Apple is not holding out LTE to as some "money-pumping marketing technique". Also, do you not realize the Nexus 4G uses an LTE/CDMA chip that wouldn't work for the iPhone?? Apple was waiting for the MDM9x15 chip to be ready before the launched an LTE device.

Of course they could make it work on the iPhone. Part of the strategy involves losing a few users who care about 4G LTE and also know that the iPhone 4(S) does not have 4G LTE (which a lot of people didn't know, according to a poll). Now, they can release the iPhone 5 and make a huge deal out of 4G LTE.

Think back to the other features. Video recording? Available on my Razr flip phone, not available until the 3GS on the iPhone. Multitasking? Not until iOS 4. Background wallpaper? Not until iOS 4. Folders? It goes on.

You're not making a whole lot of sense here. 3ppi difference isn't going to change anything in terms of marketing, but changing both dimensions from the current resolution instead of just changing the vertical resolution makes it much more difficult to adapt existing apps without making the developers make multiple versions of each app. That's why 1136x640. Currently, the display is 960x640, so adding 176 pixels in one direction doesn't have to even really affect existing apps, as they can simply leave black bars there, but adding 4 pixels down another side would just be stupid.

Once again, big fail on Apple's part if they were trying to make people buy a new model since those updates applied to older models.

Sorry, but you're wrong. You'll never be able to have a valid argument to the contrary. The entire premise is bad business.
