Rather than stretched, the icons could be warping, as in Warp Speed, aka 4G LTE.
IMO, the "stretched" icons seem more like a reference to download speed and the likely 4G LTE capability, rather than the taller screen. It's the more direct metaphor...speed blur.

Psh, this is evidence of a 3-story iPhone.
People wanted a bigger screen, and they're getting one.
It is not random. I assure you that professional designers spend a great deal of time iterating over the various aspects of their design.
I do think the taller phone is a given, but I believe the stretched icons are a nod to LTE speed.
People are getting excited by a bunch of stretched icons now. Whatever next.
