Obviously the "unknown" icon between stocks and music is the new Maps icon. a spire or a compass needle?

i think is a homage to steve jobs, who grew thinner and stretched with time, quite like most apple products.

... If you're standing right against the facade of the building and look up, I imagine the icons will look right...

Agreed. You'll only really see it 'properly' as you walk into the building and look up. It's the same sort of elongation that 3d street artists use - only it's on a vertical surface and not a horizontal one.

For those still scratching their head, here's a video. Notice how you only see the effect from one angle or viewpoint.

I printed the banner image at home then ran off to Staples to have it printed onto an old vinyl LP. When I got home I put the LP on my turntable and played it backwards and guess what???

It said John Lennon is dead! But wait a minute...we already knew that. :D

IMO, the "stretched" icons seem more like a reference to download speed and the likely 4G LTE capability, rather than the taller screen. It's the more direct metaphor...speed blur.

I think that the marketing and design team have done really well recently - think of all the themed banners and hidden signs they've done in the last year from the "shattered" and broken app icons in the barcelona store to the grand central design for that apple store.. this is a fantastic way to use the colourful apps but also add hidden meaning aside from "OH ITS COLOURFUL THAT MEANS IT'S GONNA BE AN IPAD IN 20 COLOURS! YES!"

Rotating homescreen?

Given that so many icons are displayed in a 8 app width and stretched longer as well, maybe this alludes to a longer screen that also rotates icons?

Just a guess.

After hours of forensic photoshopping into the night, digging through the layers pixel by pixel, I think I came upon a secret to the tapestry:

Looks like taller screen it is.

The only thing I don't like about Apple's ultra secrecy - as a small time developer my apps won't be "tall iPhone ready" until a few weeks after release (Because I assume SDK update will come on the 12th, then the review queues will be absolutely packed with updates.)

This is assuming that they require you to recompile with the newest SDK, which I think is what they will do to prevent old apps from breaking.

Weird. If this really is pointing to a "streched display".....just seems like bad marketing.

Maybe Apple is confident enough that a new feature in the iPhone 5 will make it more than just a stretched display?

I believe that Apple will surprise us with a system-wide widget bar sitting on top of the screen (176x640 pixels) that is visible across apps while the bottom app is still fully visible and usable.

Multi-level coolness

That's just damn creative. This is part of the reason I love this company. Too cool.

I do think the taller phone is a given, but I believe the stretched icons are a nod to LTE speed.

I reckon the mystery icon is the new maps icon ... which would explain why its difficult to recognize it at the moment.
Yes, I do believe you are right I was going to suggest the same thing so I looked trough all the comments to see if anyone else figured this out and saw that you had, great find!!

Who is wanting to bet that the guy putting up the sign made more in one week then a Chinese worker making iPhone 5's for the entire year.
