I've got my iPad 2 on craigslist now to try and get top dollar for it before the 3 is announced. Seeing as how most rumors suggest a hi-res display, I'm in. Once I have that I will hold off a couple of generations.
Yeah, me to(he says that now...).
Having an optically-laminated, 2048 x 1536 display, will the icing on the cake for me, as the last remaining 'must have'.

I'm a bit torn on whether i want sell my iPad 2 for the 3 or skip it and wait. On one hand, if the iPad 3 has a retina screen as rumoured, the same screen size, and at the same price points as the current iPad 2 then I'd definitely sell my 2 and buy the 3. The only problem is I won't know this until Apple announces it. But then the resell value for my iPad 2 will go down. I can't sell it too much earlier than release because I use my iPad to read my textbooks for assignments. I guess time will tell

let's see, last year I blew about $5000 on my MBP 17 with 512 SSD with thunderbolt display + blu ray + usb 3.0 express card + 3TB external hard drive. And then had to get an iPhone 4S to replace a broken out of warranty iPhone 4. I guess I'll have no choice but to sit out this round of iPad upgrades. 2012 will be the year I spend nothing on Apple products :D

I got my iPad2 on launch day, if the 3 is a major upgrade (as in the rumors are true [Retina, Quad Core, more RAM]) then I might upgrade, give my 2 to the wife and put the iPad1 in a mount on the kitchen cupboard for media while cooking...

I bought my iPad 2 this last November and it has suited me well. However, I like to have the latest and greatest with Apple products and that's why I'm going to sell my iPad 2 for around $300-$350 and take money saved up to purchase an iPad 3.

I bought the ipad2 at launch last year to last a few years. Would feel ripped off if had to upgrade. Works fine for me, and my wife feels same about hers.

I'll buy one the day it's released - no choice, I write apps and have to test them :(

If that wasn't the case though, I'd say I'd upgrade from my iPad 2 if it had a retina screen. Performance is otherwise quite ok on the iPad 2 (not to say I wouldn't like faster..) so I don't see much other reason to upgrade.

But after moving from iPhone 3GS to 4, and then using the iPad, I can say that the screen resolution is the main issue with it. I really wish my laptop had a retina screen too.

There's always the possibility that they've come up with some other new 'must have' feature we've not heard about of course. And there's the possibility that it'll be the 2S, with a faster chip but no new screen.

I have a iPad 1 that is basically, my wifes and our look something up device.

I thinking about either getting a 3 or maybe a discounted 2 for my own uses like notes, bible reading, reading, and email.

We'll see.

I have an iPad 1 that I want to move on to other uses. If the iPad 2 comes down in price with the release of the "3" I will have a tough decision to make. The 3 will have to be very compelling if the 2 is well-priced.

If I had a 2, I would not pick up a 3 unless I was flush with disposable cash or had a compelling reason to upgrade. The iPad 2 is a very nice device.

And fingers crossed for an LTE iPad "3".

I'll probably stick with 2 unless it is really special or somthing special comes out on the 3 that is unavailable on the 1/2. Retina display doesn't bother me as I can't see the pixels on the 2 anyway.

Starving Student Syndrome will slow me down. I'll probably aim for a alternating buying cycle (so my next one will be the iPad 4).

Hopefully will pass

I've been known to upgrade ALL of my apple products yearly...... So far I've managed to hold on to my Macbook Air 2010 and not update as their really wasn't much of a change compared to the 2011 model.

In terms of the Ipad 2s or 3 I will definitely hold off. My only deciding factor will be whether it can be jailbroken as I enjoy most of the cydia tweaks.

Judging by the length of complexity of the a5 jailbreak its save to say I will not upgrade my iPad. I think it does everything I need it to do.

If anything, the iPad 2 could be considered the iPad 1S and the iPad 3 could be the next big jump. The iPad 2 just added a faster processor, the screen had the same resolution, it is a little lighter and thinner, and added cameras which no one really uses. Not really a significant update from the iPad 1.

Yeah, I agree. I've got an iPad 2, it's great, but I only have it because I mistakenly sold my iPad after getting one of the newer mba's. Thought I wouldn't miss it, but did, hence purchased an iPad 2. Would have happily continued with my 1 till the 3 came along otherwise. I sold my 1 for £48 less than I paid for it though, so that wasn't so bad.

It's all conjecture at this point obviously, but if it follows the iPhone tick-tock cycle the optimum purchase path (unless you simply have to have the latest and greatest) would be 1->3. Still happy with my iPhone4 till the next one comes along, just as I was happy with my 3G for 2 years from launch day. Probably be hard to resist a retina iPad 3 though. Anything less than retina though and I won't be even slightly tempted.

My iPad 2 does more than I ever thought I'd use it for. I too had the 4 and upgraded to the 4S, and it was a lot of cash considering. But I don't mind as I find the camera was a great improvement and that was important to me.

I don't think I'll be splashing out for the 3. I know the resale on the 2 would no doubt be decent at the moment, but with it being the last product Jobs announced on stage, I'd kind of like to keep it. Pointless I know, but each to their own.

I've only had my iPad2 for about four months and I'm totally happy with it. If iPad3 would come both with an MS Office app that only works on iPad 3 and a usb port, I MIGHT consider it, but since both are unlikely, I'll be very happily hanging on to what I have for now. My Ipad2 does everything I want it to do, and more.

If there is a retina display I will not be able to avoid buying one; I would be able to skip simple speed bump or camera upgrades. But a retina is what I'm waiting for.

I just bought an iPad 2 yesterday and have no real interest in an iPad 3 at this time, if the iPad 3 is so good that I MUST have it immediately I'll just sell the iPad 2 and put the money toward the new unit. All in all I don't need the latest and greatest, I just wanted a great tablet that I can carry around and go what I need to do on it, I don't need a "retina" screen or a quad-core processor, I just need a solid piece of equipment to do my work and have some fun on. The iPad 2 is more than adequate to do what I need it to do, but again, if the iPad 3 is THAT amazing then I'll just sell my iPad 2 and pony up the rest of the money to get one.

You could sell your iPad 2 just before Apple's media event for perphaps $400. If the iPad 3 turns out to be a disappointment, you can get a refurbished iPad 2 for a lower price (same quality, 1-year warranty, lower price) or a brand new iPad 2 assuming Apple drops the iPad 2's price (just like it did with the first generation iPad).

So, I'd say sell your iPad 2 (16 GB?) for $400 (should be possible, especially if it is in a good condition).

Than there are three possibilities:
1) Apple introduces an amazing iPad 3, you upgrade. The upgrade-price is $99.
2) Apple introduces a disappointing iPad 3, you stay with iPad 2. iPad 2's price drops (just like with first generation iPad) with $100. You buy a brand new iPad 2 with warranty for just $399.
3) Apple introduces a disappointing iPad 3, you stay with iPad 2. iPad 2's price doesn't drop (unlikely not to drop). You buy a refurbished iPad 2 for $429. Loss: $29.
4) Apple introduces a disappointing iPad 3, you stay with iPad 2. iPad 2's price drops. iPad 2's refurbished price drops. You buy a refurbished iPad 2 for $329. Profit: $71.

To me, it seems like a no-brainer to sell your iPad 2 for $400. Only in case 3 you have to pay an additional $29 (but than you do get a one-year warranty) - and option 3 is very unlikely to happen. It's really very unlikely iPad 2 will not drop in price.

So if we forget about option 3, you will ALWAYS get a great deal: you pay an additional $99 for the iPad 3 which will most likely have stuff like the A6 processor and the retina display. Or you buy a brand new iPad 2 for the same price you sold your old iPad 2: you get a one-year warranty and your iPad is brand new. Or you buy a refurbished iPad 2 which has also dropped in price somewhere in the $300-range ($319?) - you earn $71, get an iPad that most likely looks better than your old iPad 2 and a one-year warranty.

Coming from an ipad 1, I will very likely be getting the 3. But it must have a higher resolution and more memory than the 2. The low memory on the iPad 1 is driving me crazy with crashes and sluggishness.

Well, even 512 MB would be an advancement compared to the 256 MB the first generation iPad has. I would however, too, welcome 1 GB of RAM (or even more). It would be a waste if the iPad 3 turns out to get a retina display with a quad-core processor, only to be limited by its RAM.

IF retina display.. definitely yes...

Actually, if they offer $350 again for iPad 2, then, it's going no matter what..

You do make some good points. Essentially the main point I took from your post is that I can sell my iPad 2 and hopefully make the majority of what I paid back. If the iPad 3 has the features I want at the price points of the current iPad, then I can buy that and suffer a minimal loss. If it isn't what I want, I can most likely get the same iPad I had before, but for a lower price. Thanks for helping me reason that out. Makes my choice easier.

I have already sold my iPad 2 and will be shipping it out tonight. This is to raise money for whatever the next iPad is. I'm hoping for a better display, even faster processor, and better cameras would be the icing on the cake. I realize I'm taking a little risk by doing this, and I'm also going a few weeks without an iPad.

The upside is that I will be getting the new model no matter what the new features are. I can go a couple years on an iPhone no problem, but the iPad is probably my favorite device EVER, and it's one of those gadgets that I will probably always upgrade no matter what. I use my iPad for absolutely everything. So much so that I'm even thinking about going with a 3G (or maybe even LTE!) model this time instead of WiFi only.
