Interesting. This is somewhat surprising me. I thought almost everybody own an iPad or a tablet or at least not consider iPad as a luxury item. Does iPad considered luxury item in States? :)

Use it every day in a NYC subway going to and from work, mostly for videos. Stop being paranoid.
Except I got my iPhone stolen out of my hands while I was using it on the subway, like I had been doing for months before then. So now I am a bit paranoid.

So what have you do now to change your own personal security habits when you are out on the streets walking around and now do you keep all electronic devices put away when you are out on the street ..

(c.f. Maslow's Hierarchy for this)

Is it necessary for survival? That is, do you use it for nutrition, shelter, clothing, breathing, waste excrement, or reproduction? Are there no other goods at a lower price point that meet these needs if it does?

Is it necessary for security? That is, do you use it for housing, law, financial stability, or accident prevention? Are there no other goods at a lower price point that meet those needs if it does?

Is it necessary for belonging? That is, is it a necessary component of friendship, romance, or intimacy? Are there no other goods at a lower price point that meet those needs if it does?

I think, if you look at it with a realistic analysis, you will determine that the iPad is not a necessity by any means. Most of its functions are not necessities. Those that might be can be accomplished by a dozen other things with minimal difficulty, and at a lesser cost.

I don't think there's any conclusion that can be made rationally other than the fact that the iPad is currently a luxury item. Those that think otherwise need to spend a week in an area recently assaulted by a major natural disaster.

Just use some common sense and you'll be fine. Give it a few more years and it'll seem like what a regular iPod is these days.

-Saying that, wish it wouldn't had happened and know it's nothing to brag about but 3 years ago I shot a guy's arm when trying to steal my backpack with high value contents in it. The guy tried by pulling it from me while waving a Bowie Knife at my face. The rest is history.

It was considered legal self defense. It is my 2nd amendment right but never carry my gun outside my state and have a concealed weapon permit.

I don't think anyone in this thread was disputing the actions that you took: if your life is threatened, and you have a means to defend yourself, then you do so. It's unfortunate but it happens, and I'm just glad you didn't (apparently) get hurt over that incident.

What I take issue with is the gangster attitude that some people seem to be perpetuating in this thread, like "You just try something, I DARE YA, soon as you touch my stuff, BAM! You a DEAD MAN!" As if they think that (a) it's OK to shoot someone for stealing, or (b) having a gun makes them somehow invincible.

I grew up in NYC, in the old days of high crime, and have been robbed many times, including the subway. I would just use an iPhone instead - also with mobile me you can track an iphone if stolen. An iPad is an easy grab and can make a criminal out of relatively honest people. Be discrete when and if you must use it

.

"Relativley honest."

Isn't that like being "kind of pregnant?"

"Relativley honest."

I think there are different degrees of integrity, which is perhaps what the poster was trying to get at.

I would never rob a bank or mug a person or steal an iPod out of your hands. But might I pirate some software? I've done so, admittedly.

Perhaps someone might not rob a bank or snatch an iPod out of your hands, but if you left it sitting around somewhere for too long, it might just be tempting to reach out and just... *yoink*... finders keepers, right?

Someone who chooses to mug other people is deserving of more harsh words than being "relatively honest."

This I agree with.

Many times we're tempted with crimes of opportunity where there is no personal victim -- we pirate software, we pick something up off the street and keep it, we steal pens from work, we take advantage of store pricing errors. Some of us do it. Some of us don't.

But people who target other people to deliberately steal from them, whether it was an impulse or premeditated, yes, that's just criminal.

Yes there is a very fine line inbetween the things that you said in the above post about things that you doin the workplace and other areas ..In my line of work my Security Clearance is worth more to me than beening caught stealing or robbing a person or place .. It the source for me to make a liveing and without it i can not make a liveing in my line of work for i can not get into any typle of Government building or military base without ..So yes i'm a very saight lace person when it comes to personal values i have .

The biggest con about the iPad is that everyone can see what you're doing/reading when in public. Not that I care, but it's similar to the annoying feeling you get when someone's reading your newspaper over your shoulder.

I really don't care if someone looks over my shoulder to see me playing Angry Birds or reading Macrumors. I wouldn't do anything particularly personal in that space even with just a pad of paper, so I don't see why an iPad would change that.

Wow. At what time, where and which line?

I was using my iPhone while riding the subway (Toronto). The train stopped at a station, and when I heard the doors chime, somebody just snapped the iPhone from my hands and jumped out right before the doors closed.

So what have you do now to change your own personal security habits when you are out on the streets walking around and now do you keep all electronic devices put away when you are out on the street ..

Well, for once, whenever I approach a subway station, I put the iPhone away, or at least I hold on to it much tighter. It wasn't a fun experience, it actually it could have gone worse.

Happened to a friend of mine at Downsview except I believe the guy got himself kicked in the balls for trying...he failed in the end to steal the phone.

I've used my iPhone, iPad and 17" MacBook Pro on the NYC subway too and from Brooklyn. I'm a national competitive bodybuilder. No one is f@*#kin' with me. :p

I was using my IPAD2 on the train from Brooklyn to the city every day, but after this topic I did not take out my IPAD2 this morning on the train, I don't know why, I did not feel comfortable anymore.

the MARTA in Atlanta scares me sometimes, being completely honest.. I'd never want to take an iPad out there. I use my phone though, I see a lot of people with iphones

Just asking.

It attracts a lot of attention and for some reason I am little uncomfortable using it on NYC subways.

I thought I was the only one. I use mine on the NYC bus and subways. Whenever someone ask if this is an iPad I always tell them NO and they look puzzled, then I ignore them until my stop and then I get off. Before I use mine I look around to see who is in my cart with me. I love my baby :)

I know. I wish I could just fkin use my iPad without looking over my shoulder.

I actually contemplated getting one for home and one for work. But then no news on the train. I know I might sound snooty but it's not that. I just wish I could carry it around without having to worry about it. Seriously considering getting a worth ave insurance.

Also to add it's not just about the money. The whole thing about getting mugged is scary and I really wouldn't want to deal with the trauma. Yeah I'm a man but still I have my fears and not afraid to admit.
