Why would you live in a place where you are so afraid of crime that you can't even talk on the phone, or use an electronic device in public view? It seems to me that what people consider to be acceptable is just nuts. If I found myself afraid to that extent then it would be time for some action. Whether it be pushing for a change in the priorities of local law enforcement or just leaving the situation completely, either solution would depend on factors beyond the scope of this thread.

I grew up in NYC, in the old days of high crime, and have been robbed many times, including the subway. I would just use an iPhone instead - also with mobile me you can track an iphone if stolen. An iPad is an easy grab and can make a criminal out of relatively honest people. Be discrete when and if you must use it

.

mobile me and find my iPhone/iPad is crap, all the thief has to do is plug in the device to their computer and restore it, and bye-bye to your means of recovering your iDevice.

And the thief who is too stupid to wipe the device and uses it as is is even worse and deserves to be slapped by the long arm of justice.

FYI this case works best for me. It's cheap looks cheap and smells cheap. But has good cushioning and a handle which makes the iPad more secure when I hold it in my hand primarily because of the handle. Think it reduces the chances of it being snatched straight outta my hands.*

Amazon link. Case logic

Just wondering, you bring that up because street rats are less likely to steal an iPad in an ugly, cheap case.

That's some serious winning logic:D

Should a hoodlum attempt to steal my iPad 2, I would shoot him or her, in the case of a female hooldum. My iPad 2 is far more valuable then a hoodlum's life.

Not sure if it's much different here in the UK, but I'm not scared to use it on long train journeys. London underground though? No way. Just because most of my journeys are too short and at rush hour time, not enough room when you're squeezed tight with other commuters.

Again, it's all about common sense. If you feel that it isn't safe, don't get it out :p.

They are harmless. They have what is called the "Internet Tough Guy" syndrome.

Wow, Theres some scary opinions on this thread....being prepared to kill someone over posessions is something I can't relate to at all. I suppose I'd prefer to avoid a situation where it might come to that in the first place....I'd rather get through life without having the death of someone on my conscience, especially if it wasn't even in defence of my own or someone else's life.

I just got mine in Atlanta here. Let's see, I put in secondary pouch within my bag that zips shut so if you open the mains slot you cant see it ... So no I doubt I am using it on my daily train trip lol. It's such a hot ticket item and honestly it just attracts attention to yourself; from just curious folks with questions to guys who wanna take it from you.. Best to just keep it out of site lol.

I have a kindle if I wanna read something on the train lol.

I know. I wish I could just fkin use my iPad without looking over my shoulder.

I actually contemplated getting one for home and one for work. But then no news on the train. I know I might sound snooty but it's not that. I just wish I could carry it around without having to worry about it. Seriously considering getting a worth ave insurance.
When I use my iPad or MacBook Pro on the subway I check where I am sitting. I make sure I am not sitting nearest to the door where someone could snatch it and be out of the door quickly. I sit in the middle seats furthest from the doors.

And in most states, you would be sent to jail.

Simply stealing is not enough to warrant murder.

Yes, I have prosecuted crimes LIKE that before...and won

The first month I came to NYC ,I was threatened by a man with a knife when I was playing PvZ in carriage. I remember it was 2010.9.11,the big day. However I didn't give him my iPad, course I just got it for several days at that time. Luckily,he ran away finally.

I was using my iPhone while riding the subway (Toronto). The train stopped at a station, and when I heard the doors chime, somebody just snapped the iPhone from my hands and jumped out right before the doors closed.

Happened to a friend of mine at Downsview except I believe the guy got himself kicked in the balls for trying...he failed in the end to steal the phone.

Yikes, and I thought Toronto didn't have to deal with this stuff say compared to a bigger city like NYC...I thought us Canadians were supposed to be "nice"...

99.9% of the thugs out there snatching iPads away from someone are going to flip it for a small rock of crack. They are not very likely going to use it or even know how to use it.

As has been said before, just be aware of where you are and who is around you. I had a friend who had his snatched while working on McD's. Kid just ran by grabbed it and took off. He failed to realize he was in a shi tty are of town and had his little girl with him, so there's no way he could have run.

I travel a lot and I always keep my eyes open. I also think more folks should exercise their right to carry a weapon too. Here in Ohio, Open carry and CCW are permitted. Again, just be aware and careful.

Someone neds to make a line of ipads that are basically remote triggered stun guns :) say ten feet from you and ZAP

Would be funny to watch :)

Or for the hardcore a remote detonated shape charge :)

OK back to reality :)
I am glad I do not live in a place where I am afraid daily going to and from places so much so I cant enjoy my own toys ?

You, sir, are the reason why I cannot get a license to carry in NYC . Thanks to the attitude like this, it's almost impossible for me to carry a weapon. Weapon must be used where your or your loved ones' life is threatened, or there's a threat of significant body harm. Simply shooting someone as an act of revenge for theft should land you in jail.

I use my iphone and ipad on the subway everyday. In fact, I would say that 8 out of 10 people are also using an iphone and/or ipad in the subway.

Of course I live in Seoul, Korea and not NYC, but Seoul has more people and I still don't think twice about using either devices.

First of all, guys, dont just go on downvoting some people because they just bumped the thread. Maybe they used the search option and found this thread (like those people who always say 'use the search on this forum before posting anything.')

Yea, I live in Seoul too, and especially in trains, I can find at least four people around me using a tablet, and rest of them uses cell phones, let it be smartphones or 2G phones.
In terms of safety regarding using tablets in train here in Seoul is pretty safe. I've used it everyday myself, and no one has ever tried to even touch my iPad. Btw, I'm Korean, so it's not like they are afraid because I look non-Asian, lol.

I know this comment is stupid old, but not everyone is as privileged as you seem to be.

Normally I think it's dumb to bump ancient threads, but I think that this is an interesting one to revisit. iPads and iPhones are still popular targets for theft, but they're also a lot more common, so people don't stand out like big flashing targets when they use them in public.

Personally, it's not something that I worry about in most situations. I don't wave my devices around like trophies, but nor do I avoid using them in public. I take them out and use them when and where I want to.

That being said, there are certain factors to take into consideration. I'm a black man in my early 30s, and while I'm not "big" I'm about average height and have a fairly athletic/muscular physique. So given that iDevices are so common these days, I feel that a thief is more likely to go for an easier target than a young athletic man who looks like he might put up a fight.

I carry my iPad everywhere, read it at McDonalds for lunch, pretty much everywhere. I'm older (45), runner type (fit), ex-military(shaved head, angry eyes) and a CCW. It's a felony to steal an iPad in Florida. I'm probably like joeblow, thieves would probably choose an easier target.
