The latest Apple notebook I have is a PowerBook G4 1.5GHz so I think it's time I upgrade, considering how behind it is in OS X releases, sluggishness compared to the new laptops and the growing list of apps it cannot run.

I'm going for the 15 inch with Retina display, hopefully it'll live a long life as my current laptop did...

Try to avoid disk writes and keep your new MBP in a cool environment. It will hopefully last as long as your old Powerbook G4.

Good on you, I love how things have progressed since then!

I've got a 2010 13" MBP. Still feels like I got it yesterday.
- 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo / 320M / 8GB 1066 mhz RAM.

I'm perfectly fine with my laptop. It's got warranty until Dec 2013, too. So I'm certainly not buying anything before then. touchwood

Deeply interested but end up not buying for a very good reason.

My 3-years-old 15" MBP is still going strong in a rather mint condition :).

3-times cheers for Apple!

don't have a laptop and think i'll replace my desktop. going to buy the new retina with student discount :) stock config + 16GB ram

I would've upgrade if they used the retina display on a 13".

Yes indeed! Price would fall just within my reach!

I'm curious, how many of you are actually buying this for professional work use and get paid for that work?

If you saw that on the Engadget website then you're reading it incorrectly. The article you linked to only mentions dual cores on the 13. Nowhere does it say it is thinner either.

Read the 3rd line; it reads:

"The 13- and 15-inch portables run up to 2.7GHz quad Core i7s (turbo up to 3.7GHz."

As for the thinner models for 13inch - they must have alluded to it wrongly in their live posts as they seem to have made a few mistakes as they were updating it live - which is what I was reading.

Up to. That is, the top models have quad-cores. Between the 13" and 15", the 15" ones are the higher models and those do come with QM processors.

I see nothing that effectively replaces my 17", so am not interested in the new model. If the next refresh adds a 15" 3360x2100 retina screen option which would be the real estate equivalent of a non-retina 1680x1050 screen then I might bite, although I do put a value on the upgradability and extra ports of the traditional MBP range. A lot of people wanted some sort of sealed Air/Pro hybrid, but I wasn't one of them.

Did you guys notice, Apple online store does not allow you to upgrade the previous model Macbook Pro memory to 16GB...

It only provides the option for Next-gen Macbook Pro (Retina)

I guess they figured that the people with the previous model would buy memory from a third party and install it themselves. (It's definitely cheaper that way)

With the demise of the 17", not sure I'll get another MBP. If I can get a decent 17" from another manufacturer, I may just go back to Linux.

I was planing to buy one as my current one 3 years old and dying. I am tempted to buy the retina MBP. However, non-upgradable MBP for that price has discouraged me. I am going to wait for few months and read people's feedback about retina display. And maybe I would also be able to grab a refurbished one for few hundred less than its original price.

I would most likely buy the high end retina MBP as it is not upgradeable but $3k+ after taxes - yea not happening.

I could upgrade my current one: replace HD with SSD. But I know I'm going to buy the new on in few months. My current MBP's sale price is also low so I don't want to waste money on SSD when I may not get a return back for it.

I have a late 2011 MBP 17". Think I'll keep it. With no optical drive and no ethernet port this will undoubtedly be the last MB I own. Probably just go back to Windows.

Having sold my older MacBook over 2 months ago and living with a iPad till now I have to yes with a new design, retina display, new ports, 8gb of ram and 1gb of video memory I am anxious to dump my iPad for this Air like beast.

Premium prices for a non-user-exchangeable, soldered setup is a slippery slope.

That was the initial response to the first Macbook Air. On top of it, it didn't perform all that well (a criticism that certainly can't be applied to the next-gen MBP).

It does show us the direction of future notebooks, and the prices will inevitably come down. I'm going to hold onto my 3+ year old MBP a little bit longer-- and then maybe by the time Haswell comes out we'll have more Retina macbooks to choose from.

A lot of people mention their macbooks dying after a few years I notice? :S

This is a genuine question and im new to macbook pro's in general and currently considering one but is this a common occurance?

I wonder as im Im on a dell xps 13inch model and I have had it since ...*checks internet reciepts**...OMG 2007!!!! (Dec 2007)

And its still running fine :|

Don't get scared due to wording. My MBP can still go for few more years. MBP has more durability than its windows counter part - personal experience.

I just like to upgrade my computer after every few years. When I said "dying", I meant that its performance isn't same as it was when I got it the first time. One of the reasons for my MBP's slow performance is HD. If I replace my HD with a bigger HD or SSD then it would be as good as new.

You should go ahead with your purchase if you like it. You will never look back, trust me.

I do!
My late-2011s are firing up very well though, I've maxed one of my machines with hi-res matte, 16GB and an SSD+1TB config while the other one is mostly stock with just an 8gig kit. Power-wise it suffices for me since my most demanding work is done at much more powerful workstations. As great as this retina sounds, I'll wait for it to hit Cinema Display then get myself a couple of those instead. I've planned my next purchase for Haswell and that's what I'm waiting for :)
