That was great. Arn looked much more professional and presented himself much better than Bob Ward. The reporter also seemed to be more patent, and understanding of Arn's comments than Bob Ward! I am wondering if the Suit helped things out ?

Regardless, the reporter was a jerk, and doesn't understand Apple's marketshare based upon his comments, and attitude.

Good call on wearing the suit!

I think you have gone cross-eyed again! You need to swap clothes back to the proper person! ;)

Like some other posters have said, I can understand the pressure that's involved when appearing on national television and being verbally steamrollered by a loudmouth host (why do they always talk five decibels louder than necessary?), but man, ol' Bob didn't do the Mac community any favors.

Apple is innovative because Apple is innovative. It's a fanboy mantra. And it's completely empty. This is what makes ordinary people see us as brainwashed, image-obsessed graphic designers, battling through life with our severely limited and cultish (albeit nice-looking) computers.

There's a real philosophy behind Apple's stuff -- one that gets muddied sometimes in execution, but it's still there, and it's what makes a device like an iPod an Apple, not the translucent white plastic or the cool factor. If you're heading a rumors site, even one as second-rate as LoopRumors, you should have a firm opinion on just what this philosophy is and how it makes an Apple product greater than the sum of its parts. Apple may only have a 5% computing market share (or 95% lack of market share), but that's largely because people cling to disproven myths and fail to see that there can be a legitimate form/function philosophy behind the box sitting on their desk that lets them view MySpace pages.

Again, I appreciate the pressure of national TV, but Bob made me cringe. Arn single-handedly saved the segment from rehashing narrow-minded tripe on both sides of the anchor's desk.

congrats...

why did the interviewer give the other guy such a grilling? they were all just talking tech right? it sounded like they were negotiating a ceasefire or something!

"Can I finish?"

I want to add a bit to my last post about this whole market share debate. It bugs the hell out of me because it's a red herring that Windows users, whether it's MS devotees or bovine Joe Public, love to toss out but has no substance whatever.

Popularity does not equal good. Lack of popularity does not equal bad. A band that makes it onto the hit charts is not necessarily a talented band; a computer that only has 5% of the market share is not necessarily inferior.

We hear this so many times. I personally come across this type of thinking (if you can call it thinking) weekly. Which is why it irks me even more that Bob, who was challenged directly with it by this jerk, didn't have a ready reply to this nonsense.

Arn made a better account of himself than the other guy. But the questions were a bit silly, sounded like he wanted to know what the exact innovation was going to be.

Well, if we knew, it wouldn't be an innovation. You can just say general things (as Arn did) such as their strength is in UI.

That was a cool interview indeed. Nice job Arn and good to see MacRumors further establishing it's solid reputation on the Apple rumors front. Oh and glad to finally meet you :p

Bob came out looking unprepared and maybe a bit weak because he was probably taken aback by the "host's" rudeness. Some people aren't as quick on their toes and need a bit of time to formulate a coherent response (Like George Costanza's "Jerk Store!"). This jerk didn't give Bob a chance before he started grilling him. For the same reason, I think Arn came out looking much better - he had time to listen to the grilling, digest it, and come up with a clear, concise answer. He may also be more eloquent and a quick thinker.

Also, why does an Apple phone need to be innovative to be successful? He seemed to imply that people would buy it only on the merit of its coolness factor. Well, the Razor isn't extremely innovative and we all know how ubiquitous that phone is right now. Cool sells.

Just finished watching the video (off Google) and Wow, that interviewer IS a total git! And LoopRumors was caught like a deer in headlights with his rather O'Reily-ish interview techniques. Don't have something smart/agreeable to say immediately? Get shouted over so you can never recover.

Arn even had trouble getting a word across, but he did come though with conveying what it is that makes the iPhone such a wanted product idea. Many phones can play MP3's now, but the functionality is so trapped beneath horrible UIs that consumer rarely use the functionality when it's there. The wish is for a phone that isn't packed with every feature under the sun but enough that it's powerful and at the same time these features are accessible from an interface with the same intuitiveness as the iPod.

(Like George Costanza's "Jerk Store!").

:) Yeah, maybe I'm being too hard on Bob. I don't know how I'd have fared in similar circumstances, but it was so frustrating to see him just fall back on the "innovative" mantra at the slightest provocation.

Cool sells.

Yes, but I think the host wanted, in his obnoxious way, some substance to back up the style. What is the iPhone going to give us that isn't already available? The problem is, it's all just speculation. We won't know how the iPhone is "innovative" until it arrives. Maybe this was the best tack for Bob to have taken: you don't know what makes an Apple product unique until Jobs introduces it with full vibe power from the RDF.

Arn!

Congratulations on the Interview. You finally have a face and hoping YOUR market share will also increase. That other dude got BEATUP harsh. Funny when challenged jsut on the sake of market share nobody mentioned Apple's cash ready at hand and revenues for the last qtr.

> Funny how NOBODY did their research on music phones on the market like SE with a great market share in this realm with a VERY good interface, multitasking phone/java options WHILE music plays (unless of couse a phone conversation is active).

> I still think the greatest innovation/revolution (because APPLE wont be the first to offer this) is seemless phone quality conversations, video calling & integrate your wireless phone with the iTMS wirelessly OR via USB. Most importantly on the iPhone device security will be top notch in case its stolen (remember those iPod rollings ;) ) and a possible OTA kill or whipe function similar to the RIM Blackberry devices that are on the BES server. THIS will be INCREDIBLE!

Thanks for the comments guys... and yes, I've generally been pretty private.... I believe this is the first image of me publicly available on the internet.

By the way, a suit is not my normal attire... but seemed most appropriate for an interview. :)

arn

it was surely the suit. people get taken more seriously. looprumors dude was wearing a t-shirt and he was massacred out there.

Another interview where the interviewer was more interested in promoting himself, than he was in promoting the topic. "Hmm - if I make the interviewees look and feel like idiots everyone will think I'm cool!'.

Arn handled the "tough guy" tactics pretty well, the poor dude from LoopRumors was clearly frustrated.

I hope the UK doesn't end up with crappy pseudo information bulletins like these but we probably will. It was less of a TV program and more like someone shouting at you. Its interesting that they said that music mobile phones haven't fared well. On my bus every morning, I see almost as many people listening to music on mobiles as I do iPods. I can never fathom the popularity of the iPhone idea but if it had a decent capacity (between 4 and 8GB) then i'd probably tow the line  and get one. Especially if there was a project red one.

Agreed on the TV bit, I'm so glad I don't have to watch American TV.

But your phone comment is correct but the report was focused on the US market where phones haven't quite progressed as much as they have in the UK, I can't count the number of time I've seen a business man walking down an American street with what looks like a brick with a 2 foot antenna!

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the 5/95% market share the OS market share? ie: 95% of the market uses and os different than os x?

Whats the computer sales market numbers? I though Apple was 3rd behind Dell and HP.

Why all the Dylan Ratigan bashing? He is a fine reporter.

Because he was kinda mean to Bob. :p Seriously though, I'm guessing it's because he made a comment, however correct, about Apple's lack of market share. Implying that innovation has something to do with popularity, which is not always correct. Except in the case of the iPod. Maybe he could have made his point better, or at least let Looprumors guy finish his.

Nice to add a face to the username Arn, you're all famous now and stuff.
