I really don't understand what's the problem with resellers. In a free market economy goods and services go where they produce the most value. I bought my first iPad from the mall featured in all these articles for double the retail price because I valued the iPad much more than the Americans that didn't manage to get theirs; if a product creates more value for me than for you why should you be the one getting it?

Not all the scalpers are Asians and not all Asians are scalpers. Even if they were, the fact that they are Asian is irrelevant. So the title is both inaccurate and inappropriate.

Secondly, if you want to get an iPad, wake up early and go stand in line. Don't just sit and whine about how the scalpers always get there first.

Thirdly, Apple should resolve the situation. They should ramp up their supply or implement checks to ensure fair distribution of their products.

So stop getting angry over the scalpers. They are just profiting from the market situation. This is certainly not illegal. Stop throwing around the words "immoral" and "unethical". What they are doing is in no way immoral or unethical. Wake up and grow up.

In fact, they are very smart for identifying this opportunity and making a profit from it.

TBH, I really don't care if these Asian resellers are poor, have no homes, or have no food. The fact is, It's not right and never will be right to buy up almost all of a product, and send it off to Hong Kong. These Ipad's were meant for the wholesome citizens of America, euro trash can wait till Friday!
Great bit of sarcasm that gets to the heart of the matter!

For the iPad3, maybe Apple should launch first in China & Hong Kong & save FedEx the round trip?
Indeed. The original poster stated that this is "Apple's problem", but then drew the wrong conclusions, suggesting that Apple should somehow discriminate who they sell to. If I was an Apple shareholder, the conclusion I would draw (if the premise in the original article is correct and most of these are going back to Asia), is that Apple should have launched in Asia first, and sold the iPad at a higher price as well. It's not too late, maybe they can temporarily shut down the US launch and divert all shipments to whichever country has the most people willing to spend the most. Oh, but many of you folks following this thread wouldn't like that, now would you?

Instead, I saw articles of organized people who hired the homeless to stand in line for them. They came in all colors but many homeless where African-American in some major cities. Did we see an article blaming the lack of Nintendo Wii's on poor homeless African Americans hoping to earn an easy buck? Of course not. Because that would be racist. But somehow its not racist to blame Asians for the whole reason why no one can get any iPad 2's?

How's this for racist? I'm glad that my fellow Asian American brothers and sisters are finally embracing the American way and have finally figured out how to beat the rest of the American population in grabbing the next hot thing to make a quick buck!
Well, I don't know that I'd agree that if they had been black people that we wouldn't see the same thing, but I agree that this is the free market, and it's a good thing. Get in line early, pay more to buy from a reseller, get lucky, or order online and wait 4-5 weeks. But please, people, stop complaining about it.

Too bad, for most people, that jobs interfere with this strategy. Tough to compete with people who's only job is to stand in line.
Boo hoo! Isn't it awful that because of these impoverished people just trying to get enough money to get by for another day (people who, gasp, don't even care about the iPad's magical abilities!), that some well-off fair-skinned American citizen can't pile up more debt on their credit card to buy another shiny gadget that they absolutely can't live 4-5 weeks without! FWIW, I have nothing against well-off fair-skinned American citizens. I am one.

Look on the bright side, everyone: If you order an iPad 2 online today, you can get it in 4-5 weeks. But in 4-5 weeks, the average poor Asian depicted in this article will be wondering how they're going to put food on the table for another week.

As for me, I bought two iPad 2's and sold one on CraigsList for a $180 profit. At first I felt a bit guilty about it, since I know that there were a lot of people here that were depressed that they couldn't score one for themselves. But threads like this make me feel less apologetic about it.

Enough about Asians!

At Best Buy yesterday there were 4 people of Portuguese decent buying up iPads. Upset that they were limited to only 1 per person. One had the gall to demand a translator.

where are all these asians??

I have 2 ipads and craigslist is slow. Anyone get a scalper's card...? :)

God forbid apple making this in America and taking a little hit out of their $50 BILLION CASH reserve rather than making it so that the people who actually make the iPad, and make it very cheaply, have to pay out the nose just to experience the fruit of their labors. Shame on them for wanting in on the products that are ruining their environment and living standards!

This is too funny to read. Calling Asian resellers Asians may or may not be racist, but I think it depends. The article wasn't racist in nature, it was not putting down the group of people we categorize as Asians, or showing them in a negative way.

For me, a white boy, the title or the article is not racist. But I have be pretty liberal when it comes to those things.

The truth is, not African resellers (going to sell ipad2 somewhere in the African continent, or European, or whatever), but Asian folk lined up and went for the quick income to buy/sell ipads. I say good for them. If those Asians are to be blamed for the short stock of iPads, then it's only fair to say that Asians are blamed for the ipad shortages.

We should not be afraid to call Asians Asians for the fear of being called racist. :)

since i did pick up a second one i am trying to sell it on ebay and craigslist and having a pretty hard time actually. so i don't know whats happening......

that's probably due to the same reason why we were able to get our hands on second ones... b/c they are becoming easier to come by...

Enough whining. Just buy it online and wait like the rest of us. Who said you needed to have it right now and blame those who line up early for eating up all the inventory. Grow up, folks. This is America after all and we embrace capitalism like no other.

It's funny because I have been on this forum for years and I always see these posts from people who already have the product or will be getting shortly

But then weeks/months later I see the same person DEMANDING that Apple do better for their new products availability b/c this person could NOT GET IT on the first day!

Wanting it ASAP is not a terrible thing. We all want that whether we admit it or not

BTW, I am waiting for it. Probably will get it in weeks.

I don't think the article was racist, but the title was definately picked out to draw attention. If you take the title at face value, you're telling folks that are having trouble getting an iPad2 that Asians are to blame. Not "resellers" or "scalpers", but "Asians". Asians is a broad term and covers many people. There are many Asians all over the world that have nothing to do with the shortage of iPad2's in the USA, but are we supposed to blame them?

The point is not all resellers are Asian and not all Asians are resellers.

In the end, the editors of Gizmodo have done what they set out to do. They've generated buzz surrounding their article and website. They've used racial undertones in their headline to generate page views.

We should not be afraid to call Asians Asians for the fear of being called racist. :)
I agree, as long as the use is not derogatory. If a guy at the checkout lane in front of you is of Japanese heritage, then it's OK to describe him as Asian. No sweat. If you're describing a group of people (perhaps of Asian descent) doing unsavory things, then by all means, use the full description ... Asian Scalpers or Asian Resellers.

Personally, I wasn't offended by the headline, but then again, I'm difficult to insult. But this whole thing would have been moot if the headline read "Can't get an iPad2? Blame the Asian Resellers."

But then again, that wouldn't have served Giz's motives.

I find it helpful and comforting to know what racial groups I can associate bad behaviors with. If that's "racist" then whatever.

But seriously the only reason the obvious racism that this headline contributes to isn't a "big deal" and people feel comfortable participating in it is because the situation is extremely narrow and ultimately trivial (but yes cornering the market for profit is of course illegal and easily bad. They're driving up the price of iPads without adding any value). Unlike say violent theft or illegal immigration, associations that would be more obviously influential and therefore obviously egregious.

Enough with the Asians, lets blame the Muslims!!!!

This are WESTERN CHINESE waiting in line for iPad2s. Therefore they are primarily....MUSLIMS!!! I knew it!

Sean Hannity will confirm this at 7pm tonight in his special:

Western Chinese Muslims Techno-terrorists are responsible for iPad 2 supply porblems!

Speak for yourself. I don't have the patience to go and line up for something new. As much as I want to, I don't have the time either.

same thing here in central Florida

I am seeing the same thing here in Tampa / Brandon Florida area. These individuals are all paying with wads of cash, they even have young children standing in line. Really, an eight year old has enough money for two iPad3g's. Also it is the same people every morning that buy them, some don't even understand what they are buying. They just listen to what someone tells them to get. They are always first in line and make it so real Apple buyers are sold out. I hope Apple can figure a way to solve this or make better. Don't buy from scalpers...be patient Apple will get more.

I wanna chime in on this. My old roomie of 3 years is Asian American and he was one of the resellers in line. Do you know why there are so many Asian resellers? Apparently (and this is his explanation) the Chinese government is giving out money to their citizens to stimulate the Chinese economy. It's a pretty nice sum as well. Instead of spending money over there, they are giving their contacts here the money to purchase the iPads to ship and resell back in China.
So there you have it, the Chinese government is giving stimulus money which is in turn stimulating OUR economy. :D I was given the chance to stand in line as well but it was cold and wet that night/morning. I think anyone who stands in line for these things deserves to do whatever the heck they want with them.

You are right.. except for the ignorant bigots who have popped up in this thread calling them illegal criminals and other stupid racist undertones.

Just because they are not stealing the iPads, doesn't mean they're not criminals. Or illegal. The mules could be illegal, perhaps the "line job" is the only job they can get because they're unemployable because they lack the proper credentials to get employment,

I wonder if they're paying income taxes on the profits of their daily line sitting? Anyone want to take any guesses there?
