Just because they are not stealing the iPads, doesn't mean they're not criminals. Or illegal.

EVERYONE listen to me my name is RAWLUS and I am a RACIST. Visual minorities NEED TO BE KICKED OUT of MY COUNTRY because they are stealing my iPads and all the jawwwwbbbs. CHINA and Asians are criminals and our enemy!

I wanna chime in on this. My old roomie of 3 years is Asian American and he was one of the resellers in line. Do you know why there are so many Asian resellers? Apparently (and this is his explanation) the Chinese government is giving out money to their citizens to stimulate the Chinese economy. It's a pretty nice sum as well. Instead of spending money over there, they are giving their contacts here the money to purchase the iPads to ship and resell back in China.
So there you have it, the Chinese government is giving stimulus money which is in turn stimulating OUR economy. :D I was given the chance to stand in line as well but it was cold and wet that night/morning. I think anyone who stands in line for these things deserves to do whatever the heck they want with them.

I think your roommate has it mixed up. The chinese stimulus program of 2008/2009 were mostly for state projects (creating jobs etc), vs the stimulus checks we received here in the US. Also, the thing you thought was so funny was heavily debated at the time because so much of the goods we buy with our stimulus money was from China we were funding their economic growth (as usual).

You don't remember getting that $600 stimulus check?

God forbid apple making this in America and taking a little hit out of their $50 BILLION CASH reserve rather than making it so that the people who actually make the iPad, and make it very cheaply, have to pay out the nose just to experience the fruit of their labors. Shame on them for wanting in on the products that are ruining their environment and living standards!

People working in factories are not the people buying up LV and Rolex and Apple products. China is an enormous country with a rapidly modernizing/developing economy, and that development is creating extravagant wealth for a small fraction of the population, while most people are still extremely poor.

Just because they are not stealing the iPads, doesn't mean they're not criminals. Or illegal. The mules could be illegal, perhaps the "line job" is the only job they can get because they're unemployable because they lack the proper credentials to get employment,

I wonder if they're paying income taxes on the profits of their daily line sitting? Anyone want to take any guesses there?

The way I know that the people running these operations are criminals is that they are showing up every morning with fifty grand in cash, and they are driving off with fifty grand in iPads in the trunk of a car. They do not have any visible private security. If these were ordinary schmucks, somebody would have robbed them by now.

The other way I know they're criminals: they have enough cash to give all their mules $1200-$1800 every day. Where do you think they're getting all this cash? Do you think they are walking into a bank and making a withdrawal?

If these are indeed organized crime mules then the way Apple can fix this is to notify the local Gang Task Force in each city. Heck, as a resident, you can call it in as well. Why haven't all these complainers notified NYC police? If they had, what was the police response? I would suspect that one or two squad cars parked on the street might discourage the alleged Asian gangsters.

Would you seriously rob someone who has the balls enough to drive up with cold hard cash w/o knowing who they were? They can simply bank on the assumption that they MUST BE TRIAD gangsters and not worry about being mugged. But there's absolutely no proof that they are gangsters. The fact is, we don't know and if you care so much, go up and ask the guy driving the BMW full of iPad 2's. Seriously, go ahead. I dare you.

As far as cash is concerned, I'm not surprised in our society of credit cards, that some people find it amazing when others have CASH. If there are stores buying up these iPad 2's, then they would have plenty of cash to hand out. It's just like my previous post where many people were hiring bums to stand in line for Nintendo Wii's and GASP! iPad 2's. There are quite a large number of people who earn a decent salary that could go around carrying $2000 in cash everyday, myself included, if he knew that he'll get double in an hour because you'll be flipping it to a local store for shipment overseas. If I had the time, it'll be an easy way to make $100(profit) x 20 ipads = $2000 per day! The $100 would be my profit even after paying an Asian bum to stand in line to get the iPad 2. This is just my assumption that the net would be $100...it could be higher depending on how much they are selling overseas.

How many of you have jobs that could pay $2000 per day? Heck, if I wasn't tied to my day job, I'd do it in a heart beat. Just for this month, some of these people probably netted at least $60,000 cash. Now look at the numbers again and tell me some of you wouldn't be tempted to do the same thing and then come here on this forum and laugh at everyone else complaining about all the resellers and scalpers.

Just trying to put it in the monetary prospective that seems to be lacking here. ;)

P.S. Since the assumption is that they are criminals, that would be at least $60k TAX FREE. It's all about the Benjamins folks...itsn't that the American way?

Get license plate numbers and call the local IRS office. Let them know there is a business that does about $50K a day on a cash basis and where they can find it. Make the scalper prove they are paying the proper taxes (which I really doubt).

because they are illegal. they're off the grid. banks require identification, credit requires identification.

I know quite a few US Citizens who don't have credit cards and use only cash. After they lost money in the Savings and Loans crisis a few years back and the recent recession caused by our banks, many people don't trust the banks anymore.

There are many in our society that don't qualify for credit cards and use cash all the time. Are all those people illegal as well? Someone needs an education on how the "other half" lives in this country.

Did you already forget that controversy over the use of requiring a credit card to buy Apple stuff?

Relax, as long as they file the proper paper work in a timely manner to prepare complete & accurate returns with the Internal Revenue Service to report their profits & pay income taxes, there is nothing wrong with with being a Go-Getter.

Well, it's partially true.

A lot (not all) of Chinese people only carry cash and pay with cash. They don't use credit cards.

I know this from experience.

Now, why is that?
A lot of people that aren't Chinese only carry and pay with cash. What's that make them?

Walk around Chinatown or predominately Chinese centric neighborhoods.

You see dudes taking out wads of $20's rolled up and when I say wad, I mean a huge wad. I've seen this in a Mcdonalds, on the street corner, in a grocery store, etc.

Go to any other Asian centric neighborhood and you will rarely see that.

Compare to last Friday there are significantly fewer East Asian lining up this morning at the Emeryville, CA Apple Store. I bet it has to do with Apple having announced their East Asia ex Japan launch date.

Because they're smart enough to know they don't want to be raped by the credit card companies. My parents were depression babies, and kept telling me to only buy something when I could truly afford to buy it.

That's why they paid for their houses with personal checks, and I've got a mortgage.

This defeats your own argument. That's just it - how many people, young ones no less, can draw out $2000 in cash a day, every day for a couple of weeks straight? I am not saying they are organized crime, I don't know. But you would have to be pretty naive to think these guys are just some young people looking to make a buck.

Now, you might argue that they are driving BMW's, so you think they must be doing well jobwise and have lots of cash to be able to do this. But that then begs to ask, if they are doing so well that they drive expensive BMW's and have $30,000 in cash laying around, why are they piddling around with iPad resales? Well, organized crime goes for the easy and this is an easy way to make a moderate profit. You don't see too many legitimately wealthy people tooling around town, scalping electronic items.

I'll use the Wii example since I personaly knew college students who did this.

A bunch of them camped out nights before the launch. Each of the 10 of them had plenty of cash in excess of $1000 to purchase as many Wii's as they could. Once they got their Wii's, they went on craigslist and/or Ebay and flipped them for double. The next day, the did it again....and the next...and the next. I remember seeing ebay photos of people with tons of Wii's in the background. They sold for double and in the early days, 3 times the retail price. These were ordinary college kids with some disposible income. Goto slickdeals and do searches on some of the hot sought after items and you'll see whole threads on many people from all walks of life strategizing on how to get their "goods."

I never said they were all young people. I was giving an example.

I could probably find plenty of small mom and pop business owners who would 1) offer to pay someone $100 to stand and line
2) give the money to buy a product
3) wait outside the Apple store to receive the iPad 2 immediately after they purchase the iPad 2 and give them their benjamin

Oh wait...many small stores did that according to the OP's Gizmodo link. Then they promptly shipped them overseas to the grey market.

Also, do a google search and I'm sure you'll find a few reseller forums out there talking about how "they" made their quick money....many are probably not gangsters. I'm sure there are probably some gangsters in the mix. I don't know...why doesn't someone who's complaining go up and ask them to confirm this fact? I'm just responding to all the comments that make the assumption that because they are Asian = they must be gangsters.

So walking around with wads of $20s means you're a miscreant now. Hmmm. That's quite a stretch.

Maybe, just maybe, these dudes with wads of $20s are trying to impress someone. Maybe it's one $20 bill and 100 $1 bills.

Perhaps these dudes don't think it's impressive to pull out a credit card. Unless it's an Amex Black (or higher), they ain't impressing anyone.
