Wow, only the 300th person to make the same crack. How original. I think SJ was hoping email would suffice, but the problem is a lot of older, non-smart phones can only send and receive pictures by MMS, so MMS is required for now. As more phones become real web-enabled, it will be less necessary.

i agree that apple tried to push email in the mobile space, but again apple taking a risk unnecessarily when the space wants MMS, period. It has nothing to go with where the future is, its knowing what the market wants know, and as they have proved, all it was was a software update, fail.

No, I just MMS'd a pic to another subscriber who has a Samsung and he got it just fine :)

The person in my office with an iPhone, it works great.
I tried to send one to a Blackberry friend in another state and no go.
He gets my std SMSs though.
Could be the network.

ummmm you do know 3.1 has issues right? not related to the tether "hack"

No 3.1 issues for me! Since restoring my iPhone 3GS as a new iPhone (under 3.1), my iPhone has performed FLAWLESSLY! Not a single problem.

Aren't most of the folks having problems still on those old, tired, slow 3G iPhones? :D

Anyone know if this new carrier setting may actually improve reception as well? As much as I'm really enjoying the adventure of dropped calls, that would be a nice improvement.

Is this carrier setting only to enable MMS? Anyone see any details?

Wasted two hours of my life (since 10:00 PDT) and I can't get it to work.

Itunes will not install it on my phone-getting an unknown error.

JB 3.01 with unlock-though that really shouldn't matter. Other 3GS users here seem to have it working :(

PS-anyone know if you can SSH this thing in?

Carrier Settings will not improve reception. Your physical proximity to the cell tower will as well as the presence of natural and/or man made obstacles will impact your reception.

If you want to upgrade your carrier file without running 3.1 just do this:

1. download the ipcc file from the post earlier in the thread

2. If on a Mac type this in terminal while iTunes is closed:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

3. Open iTunes and attach your phone.

4. Decline the upgrade to 3.1 prompt.

5. "Option" click the Update button and select the ipcc file that you previously downloaded.

6. It will only take a second to apply the file. Once it's complete disconnect your iPhone and reboot your phone.

7. enjoy!

I just tested this process on my phone and it worked flawlessly.

or do what the rest of the world does and upgrade. 3.1 is fine.

Original article said you need version 3.1. But since I only have the 1st gen iPhone (and not jailbroken), I don't know.
