Amazing? No
Expected? Yes

As long as it has the Apple logo, nothing else matters.

Apples powerful marketing spin and convincing ringmaster from the past, charmed the public into feeding frenzy. It's not about the phone, it's about "The Story".

The darling of Hollywood and the press, their insider grey haired journalist well placed in the New York Times & Wall St Journal, along with Fart Apps and games that appeal to the youngsters, comprise a sphere of influence unlike any other. Perceived as the most desirable brand on the planet, Apple has an advantage far beyond the iToys they make in China.

It's no wonder the numbers are staggering their buyers are presold on brand alone. Quite unique.

Actually that is 1% of it. The bulk is they have the best product, the best support and the best ecosystem.

It is nice of you to try and dismiss apples amazing success but the reality is apple makes a superior product with superior support and a far superior experience.

None of that can be overcome by android handset manufacturers just throwing more hardware at it.

People get so caught up in the war of the mobile OS it just becomes childish. Why is it that people aren't allowed to like the mobile OS of their choosing without backlash from the opposition? The iPhone has proven more than suitable for me for the things I expect it to do. For everything else it doesn't do, my iPad 2 fits the bill.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already but...

I just contacted Att about the "Backorder" status on the orders. What the told me is this: If you ordered you iPhone 4S before 5 pm today, you will get yours on the 14th. If you ordered it after, you MIGHT get it then, but more likely it will be 14-21 days after the launch date. For what it's worth, that's what I was told...

I would take the Backorder status with a grain of salt for now....this is exactly how the iPhone 4 was shown on the status page last year...basically until they were shipped and arrived the day before launch. I ordered well before 5PM today and my status shows as backordered as well.

The only thing we know for sure is that it's going to be a long week and there are going to be a ton of paranoid threads here.

200,000 just from one carrier? And people said this phone wouldn't sell. Great news. :apple:

I loved the headlines the following day. So who's laughing now?

At least it's available in White from day 1

Don't get me started on last year! I held out for 2 months (actually the phone was sold out for that long ) to wait for the White iPhone announcement. It never happened :(

Well done Apple, but why the hell would anyone want ATT? I'm trying to run away from it.

Been with AT&T since the first iPhone and I love them. I don't know why people hate them so much. They treat me great honestly. But then again every year they qualify me for new iPhones and I get blinded, so I don't mind.

Wow...now it says "ships from 1 to 2 weeks"

The only reason I ordered from AT&T is to ensure my $5/mo text messaging plan wasn't lost. If I ordered through Apple.com (as I have for years), I would've had to choose the pay-per-message or $20/mo option, losing my grandfathered plan.

You may wanna look into that...

So do I. Fortunately, I can afford to buy unlocked, but I'd much prefer if cell phone companies here offered the same flexibility as they do in much of Europe.

Well technically so can I but I'd still be paying the same monthly rate even if I wasn't subsidizing the phone in my bill. So really you're paying a lot more for the same phone.

Was the 4 Slow ? No

Was the 4 Camera Bad? No

Is iOS 5 only on this new iPhone? NO

Is it a new Design ? NO !

SIRI was an App you could get for ANY iOS Device until recently (They Pulled it for No good reason)

I'm not sure I see what the big Whoop is all about.

Well, as amazing as the preorder number is, people have been waiting for this iPhone longer than any before it. True test will come over the following months to see if they keep getting this incredible demand. Demand from iPhone 4 was unprecedented, it can't get much bigger than that.

By that logic, no one would ever upgrade to anything.

I got a successful pre-order in through Apple last night around 3am local time (after they took the online store down for a bit). Got the full upgrade eligibility discount despite getting the iPhone 4 on launch day last year. Sold my old iPhone 4 last weekend so I've managed to make out great. Couldn't be happier... until the next iPhone release. :D

If you attempted to use Siri on the existing hardware you would know it was stripped down and really only a demonstration of the technology.

Siri on the 4S enables an AI interface for the first time on a phone.... Yes it is revolutionary.

Only 6.4 days until I accidentally send real physical greeting cards to everyone on my contact list for a mere $475 + tax! :p

Yeah that could make the old-fashioned inadvertent "reply-all" seem really quaint and harmless. That, and one-click buys of the Hope Diamond or whatever, are concerns for me as well. But for me it's that if I put my glasses on a little bit slanted, I become a hazard to myself near online buttons. I have that Varilux type of lens. They can really warp mid-length views that are not perpendicular. I have to wear bifocals instead when I am cutting fabrics! Anyway I hope sending real cards with real postage requires something more than one-click, or I'm doomed.

I don't think that the phone being underwhelming, and it selling really well, are really that incompatible.

I was certainly disappointed with the phone, but I bought it anyways because I wasn't going to wait until the iphone 5, and, though I was tempted by the upcoming Nexus Prime (especially after seeing the leaked specs), I'm already invested in the iOS ecosystem and don't want to make a switch at this point.

In one of the SJ tributes, they mentioned how people were willing to go out and buy an Apple product on day one because SJ had a trusted record. So, people, I think, are buying the 4s on the strength of Apple's previous products. There's certainly a halo effect hanging over this phone, but that doesn't mean it's not underwhelming. They can't keep releasing unimpressive products lest they see that trusted record fade away and with it the halo effect that brightens those otherwise 'just good enough' products.

so you're assuming that everyone getting the iPhone 4S has the iPhone 4? Oh ok. you're also assuming that no one is selling their iPhone 4 for $300+ and covering the cost of the 4S or paying a maximum of around $150 for it? Oh ok.

you're also saying that a MUCH better camera, more storage, faster Internet speed, quicker overall UI, voice commands, iOS5 taking advantage of the A5 processor isn't worth an upgrade? oh ok.

I didn't preorder, as I was still on the fence as to whether or not I actually wanted the 4S. As long as I can buy an unlocked 4S without a wait it looks like I'm set then. White 4S it is! Thanks for the response!

Exactly, but an unlocked black 4s. That is unless I find a deal on a sg2 to feel like I'm getting something new until the actual ip5 comes out.
