Amazing? No
Expected? Yes

As long as it has the Apple logo, nothing else matters.

Apples powerful marketing spin and convincing ringmaster from the past, charmed the public into feeding frenzy. It's not about the phone, it's about "The Story".

The darling of Hollywood and the press, their insider grey haired journalist well placed in the New York Times & Wall St Journal, along with Fart Apps and games that appeal to the youngsters, comprise a sphere of influence unlike any other. Perceived as the most desirable brand on the planet, Apple has an advantage far beyond the iToys they make in China.

It's no wonder the numbers are staggering their buyers are presold on brand alone. Quite unique.

You know what? Not everyone cares if he or she has the "fastest" phone out there, or the one with the largest screen, or NFC. If the iPhone 4S does what a person wants out of a phone, what's wrong with people buying it? The iPhone $s is certainly the best iPhone ever released, and it has a lot nice features, particularly to someone just out of contract on a 2009 phone. I don't begrudge anyone buying an Android phone (I have a Nexus One, myself), and wonder why anyone would begrudge someone else buying an iPhone.

I ordered two black ones today. Now, I wish I had ordered at least one white one. Oh well. I wonder if I can exchange it once I get it.

Even in the depths of the depths (1996 under Gil Amelio after the damage Sculley and Spindler had done), Apple still had a "cool" factor to it. Its problem was that it was just killing itself. The clones nearly brought down the company because they nearly squandered all that loyalty by giving people a commoditized alternative.

I had a PowerBook 540c from work at that time. The UI was amazing, and System 7.6 was light years ahead of Windows 95 in terms of usability, though Windows had System 7.6 beat in terms of technical ability (e.g. pre-emptive multitasking, advanced file system). The only issue I had with the 540c was that it had a bad build quality. I can't even remember how many I saw around the office with batteries popping out, wires exposed because the plastic cover had come off, or screens that looked like they were about to fall off.

Fortunately for Apple, Gil Amelio's best decision came later that year was buying Next and realizing that Jobs had created the long-awaited OS for the future. Once Steve Jobs came back, it was obvious the writing was on the wall.

Though the first iMac is what put Apple back on the map, it was the "lampshade" iMac released in 2000 that established Apple's reputation for blowout product announcements. I remember all the hype about what Apple was going to release. The rumors were even crazier than the "iPhone 5" rumors were last week. Time Magazine Canada had the misfortune of spilling the beans a few hours early on its website with a picture of that iMac. Ironically, it didn't actually sell that well (and was replaced by something similar to the current design), but it was followed up by the iPod in 2001. The rest is history.

Heh, yeah I hated that imac. I thought it looked really tacky (I liked my beige boxes). I remember though later I had to give it tribute for it seemed it and the ipod seemed to save the company (I've been a Macintosh fan since the first one. I think I had a powermac 6100 during that time when Apple almost went under. I was going to an engineering college and had a lot of friends who were pro Windows/anti Mac who would taunt me that my favorite computer was going to go under).

Honestly, I resisted a lot of change that Jobs had brought around when he came in (I didn't like them getting rid of the floppy drive, I hated the ugly look of the first imacs and only would consider the towers, I thought the ipod was severely overpriced and under featured, shoot, I ridiculed the iphone when it came out).

In hindsight I had to eat my words that he was right and that he did manage to save the company. And now I can use a macbook pro that I do absolutely love the design of (I still don't like those imacs ;) though I did like the G4 design and I have one serving now as my bedside stand).

And now I have an iphone (it's a 4 and it's my second one and I'm drooling over the S and the faster processor and Siri) and am totally addicted to it as well as a Nano which I love for walking and riding on my motorcycle (still think it's overpriced but their recent price changes bring it a little closer to reasonable and had to admit when I got my first one, a third gen, that even overpriced it was a good little music player and the extra features it was "missing" really weren't needed. I still don't really use the radio even though it has one now).

Deja Vu

From David Pogue:

"Society adopted a cycle of reaction to Apple that became so predictable, it could have been a “Saturday Night Live” skit.

"Phase 1: Steve Jobs takes the stage to introduce a new product.

"Phase 2: The tech bloggers savage it. (“The iPad has no mouse, no keyboard, no GPS, no USB, no card slot, no camera, no Flash!? It’s dead on arrival!”)

"Phase 3: The product comes out, the public goes nuts for it, the naysayers seem to disappear into the earth.

"Phase 4: The rest of the industry leaps into high gear trying to do just what Apple did."

Somewhere, Steve Jobs is smiling. :apple:

I'm in between upgrade cycles and I can get the 32GB for $550 with AT&T. It says it requires a 2 year commitment - but does anyone know if this pushes out my upgrade eligibility for the next phone? I would be eligible for a fully subsidized upgrade in Feb.

i hv the white iPhone 4.
and I'm still getting this as it's an iPhone 4 steve...
thanx for everything....:(

Seems like a waste to sign for two more years for so little a discount, but it's your money. I would imagine your fully subsidized upgrade would be pushed back as well.

Cool!

Only 6.4 days until I accidentally send real physical greeting cards to everyone on my contact list for a mere $475 + tax! :p

I just did the same thing. I took a leap of faith at apple and canceled my order for the 16 GB. When I tried to then order a 32 GB from apple, the system told me I wasn't eligible to upgrade (used it up on my 16GB).

I called 1-800-MY-APPLE to see if they could help. They told me that AT&T had to clear things from their end and that it would take 24 hours. However, as soon as I received an email from apple confirming my cancellation (~5 minutes later), I *then* was able to order the 32 GB phone from apple's site (i.e. my eligibility returned).

Hope this helps.

I tried doing the same thing as you but it does seem to be working. Hopefully it is b/c Apple and AT&T are closed for the night. I hope it restores shortly so I can order.

Worst case is I wait a few days longer for the 4S 32GB - I still have a great 4 running iOS5 so I will not complain.

Not everyone cares if he or she has the "fastest" phone out there ...

You know what though? I'd suggest the iPhone _is_ fast. Not because of specifications or benchmarks, but because the effective experience is quick, streamlined and logical.

I find myself moving through iOS without any delays because of the combination of hardware, software and design. :)

Two things you may be sure of with each new iPhone:

1. It’s a guaranteed flop and nobody will want one :p

2. It will break sales records and customer satisfaction records.

That's what I was afraid of. Need to talk to AT&T tomorrow.

I've had an iPhone since the day of the first price drop on the original and upgraded with every phone. Basically full price->subsidized->full price->subsidized->and a mystery w/ the 4S.

Yeah, an unlocked phone will only be another $200 I believe. That "partially subsidized" price is a bit steep (considering it also commits you to another two years), and that's one reason I didn't pre-order, though I've at least got a full discount coming in December.

Oh the irony. David Pogue is a tech blogger. Is this article an example of a tech blogger savaging iPhone?

And yours does? As of 1 minute ago, according to apple.com delivery date for all iPhone 4S models is still October 14th. You need to order some more phones. Maybe then hey will be sold out.

what happened to:
"if there is no iphone5, the iphone is going to get crushed by the SGII"
"Android is going to gain major ground if Apple doesn't get a bigger screen"
"the design of the iphone 4 is old, and no one wants to buy an old looking phone"
"customers care #1 about how things look"
"I am leaving for the SGII"
"Headline: iphone launch a dud/no new iphone/did not meet expectations"
"Apple has lost its edge with the 4s"

and of course, now, let the back pedaling begin....

"I didn't say it wouldn't just sell, just that it wouldn't be a good phone!"

Apple needs to sell 30 million iPhones in Q4 not 200K. It's not time for any conclusions yet.

I would cancel your preorder.

Apple has announced they will have unlocked versions for sale in November.

I can't see the demand for them being nearly as high, given the $649++ price. Yes, some people will want it, but the bulk of sales are going to be subsidized/contract sales.

I didn't preorder, as I was still on the fence as to whether or not I actually wanted the 4S. As long as I can buy an unlocked 4S without a wait it looks like I'm set then. White 4S it is! Thanks for the response!

Apple will continue to kick @$$ for years to come, as long as they keep Steve in mind. The man is a legend, and I'm excited that we have yet to see all he did for the company. I hope the next iPhone redesign is the best one yet to continue on with his legacy, so he can live on with his passion.

It's just an outline of an Apple. The logo has no magic of it's own. Apple built it's brand by making better products, over the long haul, than any of their competitors. At this point some people do buy based on the brand... But it's a brand with a proven track record so it's a rational strategy.

Really, it's silly to attribute Apple's success to some kind of mass irrationality when there is a much more likely possibility: Apple makes good products and people like that.
