I'm so happy for Samsung. Maybe they can get out of the shipbuilding business now.

Here's news. Apple makes 2/3 of the profit in Smartphones and still has not been able to keep up with supply with just 2 models. I doubt that 3 models will change that even with continuous production ramping (which is Tim Cook's forte).

Plenty of room in Smartphones for a few big players, including Samsung and Nokia, but given everything, I would rather be working with Apple's base of users than any others.

I read somewhere in some tribute that when Steve took over Apple again he told the person (i can't remember who I read this from) that one of the assets was Apple's very loyal fan base and that would help him turn around Apple (that is not the exact phrase but the meaning was something along those lines). I know the guy making the tribute was just being astonished at Steve doing what was seemingly the impossible.

Is anyone able to check their Order Status on AT&T's site? If so, please reply.

The only reason I ordered from AT&T is to ensure my $5/mo text messaging plan wasn't lost. If I ordered through Apple.com (as I have for years), I would've had to choose the pay-per-message or $20/mo option, losing my grandfathered plan.

I've ordered two iPhone 4s's from AT&T at ~7:30AM EST this morning (one was a mistake). I've been calling to cancel the first order (black, not white), but AT&T claims the orders don't exist. So does the ATT.com website (says it may take up to 24 hours). I've spent 3 1/2 hours on the phone to no avail thus far, despite getting order confirmations at 7:33AM and 7:49AM this morning.

Yes am happy for you I got my 3G iPhone I just can't afford a new enjoy your iPhone 4s

If these numbers were from July/June with a normal iPhone release cycle I would be impressed but since is 4 months deleyed from a normal cycle you have 4 extra months of pent up demand. You have 4 months of people who's contracts have ended/up for renewal. So color me not impressed by these number.

Both those factors are a HUGE shot in the arm for sales. Even with a less than impressive phone any one who thought this was not going to be record breaking sells is an idiot because 4 months of pent up demand is going to cause some massive sells.

Are you sure iPhone sales have been poor in June July and August but that they are going to get it all back now? Were sales poor? If they are getting it all back then what is the problem? 'm going to have to see some numbers please.

They even have a place called Phones4U. No lie.

LOL. When I was living in London (back in 2004), I actually bought a phone from Phones4U (a Sony Ericsson C700 IIRC - I also had an SE P800 - definitely a phone a few years ahead of its time, if only SE realized it). I was surprised even then that Carphone Warehouse hadn't changed their name. I half expected to see one of these in there.

Haha nice one

...But but but the pundits all said the keynote was a disappointment.

How could they have ever been wrong??

Keynote guys did a great job. Looking at the empty seat with the black RESERVED sign didn't make this an easy task.

I finally ordered my black 16gig iphone 4s from apple.com around 6am. Waited 3 hrs for ATT to allow premiere accounts upgrade...when I check my status for the order, still says oct 14 est delivery, although processing, hasn't reached ready for shipping yet, although hoping it will happen shortly (crosses fingers).

Anyone know if it doesn't reach ready for shipping by a certain time it will get delayed...I have to figure 6 am pre-orders should be locked in for oct 14, but hey I could be wrong...

Btw, longtime lurker, first time poster.

Lucky you I wish I can get one

Ordered a black 32 GB from Sprint today. Took two tries but it finally went through. Had to give up on T-Mobile getting the iPhone and the unlimited data on Sprint made the choice for me because when I actually need to download something for motiongraphics design on the road, it'll probably be a big file. Can't wait until the 14th! Will finally have a decent phone for business!

here we go again, for all the naysayers here that said this update was lame.
People forget the geeks/people here at MR are a microcosm of Apple's market.
I knew this phone would be a success. iPhone 4 had a great design and was a winner and now the 4S is a much better one.
Buying it last night was a nightmare. I hope Apple/AT&T will fix this online system next time.

Tech spec geeks are not Apple's target audience. I really interested to see what the sales figures are for Verizon and Sprint. I think it was a stroke of genius for Apple to offer the iPhone 4 for $99. There will be a lot of people that wanted the iPhone 4 but could not justify the cost of the phone. This could very well be the best quarter yet for Apple. Plus it is a great time to buy Apple stock.

In today's news:

Samsung is widely expected to report record profit from handset sales and overtake Apple as the world's biggest smartphone vendor in unit terms in the third quarter, after selling just about 1 million fewer smartphones than Apple in the second quarter.

I do not think they are laughing at Apple these days. Those "plasticy" phones now outsell iPhone not to mention the fact that Samsung's flagship phone (SGSII) has been recently outselling iPhone in such critical markets as England and Japan (it as not available in U.S. until a few days ago).

Don't forget about the 25% Android return rate. :)

Even in the depths of the depths (1996 under Gil Amelio after the damage Sculley and Spindler had done), Apple still had a "cool" factor to it. Its problem was that it was just killing itself. The clones nearly brought down the company because they nearly squandered all that loyalty by giving people a commoditized alternative.

I had a PowerBook 540c from work at that time. The UI was amazing, and System 7.6 was light years ahead of Windows 95 in terms of usability, though Windows had System 7.6 beat in terms of technical ability (e.g. pre-emptive multitasking, advanced file system). The only issue I had with the 540c was that it had a bad build quality. I can't even remember how many I saw around the office with batteries popping out, wires exposed because the plastic cover had come off, or screens that looked like they were about to fall off.

Fortunately for Apple, Gil Amelio's best decision came later that year was buying Next and realizing that Jobs had created the long-awaited OS for the future. Once Steve Jobs came back, it was obvious the writing was on the wall.

Though the first iMac is what put Apple back on the map, it was the "lampshade" iMac released in 2000 that established Apple's reputation for blowout product announcements. I remember all the hype about what Apple was going to release. The rumors were even crazier than the "iPhone 5" rumors were last week. Time Magazine Canada had the misfortune of spilling the beans a few hours early on its website with a picture of that iMac. Ironically, it didn't actually sell that well (and was replaced by something similar to the current design), but it was followed up by the iPod in 2001. The rest is history.

Any guesses on the total number? I have no idea, but I'm going with close to a million. Or is that way off?

If ATT had 200,000 in 12 hrs-May be over 400,000 in 24 hrs. Add about the same amount between Sprint and Verizon, making 800,000. Best buy is taking preorders. I don't know about others. May be 1 million in USA. Now add UK, France, Germany and Japan for another 1/2 million.

My guess is 1.5M in 1st 24 hrs

a under-clocked a5...... these people r freaking crazy.and before somebody start the iphone 4 lags at times.i can see why apple do these tiny arse updates because they know they have weirdo's for fans

I bet the Android phone manufacturers wish they had weirdos for fans. Oh wait...

The 4s is just as good if not better than most offerings out there. People over reacted.

Ordered my 64gb.

I ordered my 64GB too. I already had an iPhone 4.

The 4s had exactly what I was hoping for:
  • More megapixels with a better lens.
  • Image stabilization.
  • More storage space.
  • Faster (of course).

We'll see if the AT&T download speed is faster. That's nice but I'm not counting on it :)

1080p is extra icing, not even sure if I'll use it.

I'd have liked a better front facing camera with a flash.

I wish they'd put something extra in the $299 model (like a better front facing camera with a flash). It kills me to pay an extra $100 for the first 16 GB upgrade and then the extra $100 for the next 32GB; I wish there was some extra minor difference that would be a bonus for that "Apple Tax"...
