Though the first iMac is what put Apple back on the map, it was the "lampshade" iMac released in 2000 that established Apple's reputation for blowout product announcements.

It was actually 2002 and was the only iMac for 2002, 2003 and half of 2004. Not bad for a 'failure'
It was called the 'iMac G4'

Well done Apple, but why the hell would anyone want ATT? I'm trying to run away from it.

voice + data at the same time.
only carrier that has coverage at my home.

even if I had multiple carrier offerings, voice+data simultaneously is non-negotiable for me.

If these numbers were from July/June with a normal iPhone release cycle I would be impressed but since is 4 months deleyed from a normal cycle you have 4 extra months of pent up demand. You have 4 months of people who's contracts have ended/up for renewal. So color me not impressed by these number.

Both those factors are a HUGE shot in the arm for sales. Even with a less than impressive phone any one who thought this was not going to be record breaking sells is an idiot because 4 months of pent up demand is going to cause some massive sells.

Having both a 3GS and an HTC Inspire, I put the HTC over the 3GS, even though I still like the 3GS a lot. There are a lot of nice phones out there right now. I *do* like how easy it is to drag/drop mp3 files into my HTC and use them as ringtones or music files without iTunes or anything else.

Might want to see how iOS runs on your 3GS and how it improves the use of the phone. From what I have read iOS 5 runs really well on the 3GS.

im starting to wonder if there's something wrong with me. i've stayed up and pre-ordered every other iphone (yes, including the 3GS, upgrading from the 3G). however this year i simply did not care. or maybe im just growing up and don't see a need to update every year.

in either case, congrats apple.

I hate 2yr contracts.

So do I. Fortunately, I can afford to buy unlocked, but I'd much prefer if cell phone companies here offered the same flexibility as they do in much of Europe.

Unfortunately, you can't blame the phone companies entirely. Lots of companies have tried subsidy-free contract-free deals. Nokia had some flagship stores here selling unlocked phones. They closed last year. Google tried selling the Nexus One unlocked and SIM-free on T-Mobile and AT&T. That experiment lasted about 3 months (though I actually bought one and still use it). Apple has managed to at least sell an unlocked iPhone here, but unfortunately hasn't been able to convince (or doesn't want to do so) AT&T to give a break to those of us who don't take their subsidies.

it would take more people actually buying the unlocked phones, or refusing to sign long-term contracts for the phone companies to actually change.

You'll be rewarded with an iPhone 5 next year that will knock the ball out of the park. Bank on it. :apple:

Except that the iPhone 4 sold well during the quarter ended in June (despite the expectation that a new iPhone was coming soon). We'll find out the week after next how well Apple did during the recent quarter. I expect that the iPhone 4 still sold decently.

Minus that the those sells followed Apple normal trend that they tend to slow down close to launch.
The sells for the past 1Q are going to be poor for Apple. It is relative to Apple not the market as a whole.
Also are you telling me that there was no pent up demand that gives it a huge shot in the arm? Are you really trying to make that argument?

LTD see above. Your argument is complete irreverent. Your links do nothing to tell me it is not pent up demand.
Maybe at some point that logic will make you understand.

Random question - any help appreciated

I ordered a 16 GB AT&T 4S on apple.com this morning and I am looking forward to receiving it. However after thinking about it, I think I want the 32 GB. What is the best way to go about exchanging?

Should I cancel my order and re-order 32GB? I am afraid my AT&T upgrade might get messed up and I also will loose my priority.

I guess the other option would be to get my phone and exchange it an Apple store for a 32 GB. Would I have a certain amount of time to do this?

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone.

I guess you are right. For some reason I thought it was 2000. Anyway, I just remember all the hype that made this past two weeks pale by comparison (apart from SJ's untimely death).

All this proves is next year they can launch an iPhone 4SS and people will go bonkers over it.

This isn't anything new, they took the send iPhone and added an "S" to it and people went bonkers over it too.

Yes, they'll take an awesome product: Increase the megapixels, upgrade the video, put in a better lens, double the speed and increase the graphics processing by 7 times and offer more storage and people will go gaga over it. Let's toss in some better antennas and faster download speeds too...

They took a great product and a great selling product and made it more insanely great. And people are going bonkers over it.

I live in the NWburbs of Chicago, and just preordered my 4s over the phone.
The lady on the phone said they were slow, slow, slow compaired to the iphone4, (and she's been there 4 yrs) -

Show me some "real world" numbers, (not just someone BSing about the numbers)

I'd suggest calling 1-800-MY-APPLE and seeing if they can change the order to a 32GB version for you. I'm sure Apple can find some way of taking an extra $100 from you.

200,000 in 12 hours isn't the problem.

It's that 100,000 of them are trying in the first 5 minutes.

Yes. Initially, I tried to pre-order. Of course, so did a lot of other people. Once the first bunch got through, for many, it was pretty swift.

I believe it was 2001. I remember that date because that is the first Mac I bought and it was a 17" 800MHz iMac G4.

Unfortunately I already tried that and they said they cannot because the upgrade is locked through AT&T.

Anecdote. Perhaps she wasn't as busy, but if AT&T corporate is reporting it's the best release ever, I'd be inclined to agree with them. Remember, every release has been a bit different, and 2:00am-4:00am CDT aside, Apple's website worked pretty well today. Perhaps she was busier the last 4 years because people gave up on the website and called the stores or CS lines, and this year they ordered online.

I'd call on the phone and ask. I bet they fix you right up, IF you can reach someone.

I know the stores have a 2-week no questions return, no restocking fee for computers. I'm not sure if it applies to phones. Nor sure if you purchased it on-line if it counts.

Unfortunately I already tried that and they said they cannot because the upgrade is locked through AT&T.

Then I'd try AT&T. If that doesn't work, just wait for the phone to arrive next Friday. Don't open it up, but take it back to the store the following Monday (when the first weekend traffic has died down a bit) and exchange it at an Apple store. As long as the box is unopened you should be able to exchange it without a restocking fee.

If it makes you feel any better, just remember that those of us who want the unlocked version will be waiting at least another 18 days (and probably longer) before we can even order the phone.

The problem is I am on Verizon and live in an area that will be going 4G next spring. Do I really want to enter a 2 year contract and then have to spend a year and a half waiting to have a 4G handset? Nope.

Quote from Ken Segall, Namer of iMac and Think Different

Occasionally Jobs can be scary, Segall says, but he’s mostly charismatic and fun. “More times than not, he’s a charming, funny guy,” Segall says. “His charismatic, fun side is what makes everyone want to follow him around.”

But he sometimes freaks out. “I was around for a few good flare-ups but they weren’t directed at me,” Segall recalls. “He mostly got mad if things hadn’t moved forward; if he didn’t see two weeks of work out of you. That’s when he got annoyed. Everything’s in constant motion at Apple. There’s always new products.”

Segall was still consulting for Apple until a couple of years ago when he started working for Dell.

“Dell and Apple: It’s night and day,” Segall says. “It’s a transactional world Dell lives in. It’s all about numbers. Everything they say about Apple making products for themselves is true. Apple — it’s about changing the world. For everyone else, it’s about the money.”

Bugger I buckled, just ordered one and a leverage case, gone properly to town...

Annoyed at myself, probably wouldn't have done it if Steve hadn't died (yes i'm that sad) but ultimately secretly overjoyed i get to pick it up on friday :D

I finally ordered my black 16gig iphone 4s from apple.com around 6am. Waited 3 hrs for ATT to allow premiere accounts upgrade...when I check my status for the order, still says oct 14 est delivery, although processing, hasn't reached ready for shipping yet, although hoping it will happen shortly (crosses fingers).

Anyone know if it doesn't reach ready for shipping by a certain time it will get delayed...I have to figure 6 am pre-orders should be locked in for oct 14, but hey I could be wrong...

Btw, longtime lurker, first time poster.

Really?? Premier? I'm premier and ordered at 3AM... :-/

Product Launch

Can we consider that Apple lost their CEO a day after the keynote and release.

What other company could withstand this type of shock?

Can we just forget about the 4S/5 thing and the form factor we wanted? I wanted a larger screen, too. But, can we just give a touch of understanding and dignity to what they must be going through?

So what! 4S now, 5 later.

There was some pent up demand, to be sure, but remember that most people don't go onto tech sites the way we do. Do you really think your mother (for instance) cares whether her phone has a single core or dual core processor? As long as it does the things they show on TV or in the store, then it will sell.

Apple products rarely top the spec charts. They have done a decent job figuring out how to sell their products on features other than raw specifications. They are similar to BMW or Audi in that regard.
