My chat with att said once I received the new phone, do the trade in at www.att.com/trade in. Once they received the trade in and processed the bill credit from this promo for the installment will start to apply to my bill.
He also said make sure to take note for the shipping number for the trade in

It clearly states that if you trade in any 6, 6+, 6s, or 6s+ you get a free 32gb iPhone 7.'

No it clearly doesn't say that.
It says "eligible" iPhone.
Then it defines eligible by saying you must use the AT&T Trade-in program.
What if that program is like Gazelle where your credit is calculated based on the model and condition of your phone?
This is AT&T we're talking about.

While that is nice, when I traded in my perfect 5 for the 6 and got a promotional card for $200 I couldn't use anywhere. I fought AT&T on it in every direction, but they wouldn't just give me the bill credit, so it was a wash of $400 (the phone and this dud card.) I don't trust them as far as I can spit. It's one of the main reasons why I won't go back to them.

What sort of promo card did you get?

In years past when I've gotten one I just paid my bill with it and did something else with tha cash I'd have otherwise used.

Are you saying AT&T wouldn't let you do that? What reason did they give?

That's funny because my chat with ATT Rep, told me it had to be done in a retail store. I will do the return in a store. Makes me have more peace of mind to do it in store.

I appreciate your skepticism but you are way over nit picking their language. The offer is called the "Free 32gb iPhone 7 Offer". The "Eligible Trade In" must use the "AT&T trade-in program", which is just the name of the division of AT&T that handles trade-ins (i.e. Not gazelle, not Amazon trade in, not Craig's list etc) and to receive the "Free 32gb iPhone 7" you "Must trade in an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, or 6s Plus in good working condition that is fully paid off". Thus, if you send in one of those models to the approved att division/address then you will receive a free 32gb iPhone 7 by way of a $650 credit applied in monthly payments.

Feel free to contact them on chat or phone for confirmation, or just skip the deal if you're really that unconvinced.

When I bought an i6 I got a $200 credit for a 4S and went into the store, traded it in and used the store credit towards my bill. Didn't matter to me since it gave me a free month of service that I would have had to pay anyway. I was just glad to get $200 for a 4S ;)

Alright, I just disregarded any errors popping up about me selecting a data plan, even though my unlimited was selected. It all went through, i feel every year i do this I'm doing some sort of card shuffling trick with the devil to keep my unlimited.

Now will I receive a email about the trade in program, or is that something i have to do before sept. 30th ?

You'll receive the email after your iPhone 7 ships is what I've been told.

I contacted AT&T and was told that to be eligible for the free iPhone I have to port in a number or add a new line. I currently have five lines with AT&T. None are on contract or tied to any Next program. What program if any is available to trade in an iPhone 6 while keeping the existing number?

I would call back and get someone else. If you are all pif on those lines or no longer under a 2 yr contract, you should qualify without opening another line. Why are they even talking about porting?

They are very poorly informed about this promo since it was thrown together so quickly. You do not need new service, only an "upgrade eligible" phone on own of your current lines. I wonder if the call reps just had a shift change and now we have to re-educate a new group of customer service reps.

In theory that should have been my case, but every store and phone manager I spoke with, flat out nixed it. And I wasn't even rude. Glad you were able to get something in return.

This is why I plan on waiting to buy in-store where they can process the trade in at the same time. Hopefully, ATT will have regular 7 Black in stock. Any capacity is fine.

Wow, I am really confused by this. Just exactly what did they say you could use the card for? I was able to have the rep apply it right to my bill on the spot

Toward my bill, I asked them if I could use it right there and they said no. I had to wait. I was given a dud card and they did nothing to fix that despite the receipts etc.

Wait, your saying they took your trade in and then wouldn't let you apply your credit to your bill that day and then didn't put the credit on the card they gave you? Then you had to prove that you traded it in? Or prove that you hadn't already used the card? So glad that didn't happen to me. I would have caused a BIG scene!!

Should I cancel Apple upgrade pre order to cash in on the ATT deal? Is there a catch I am missing?

Differences are the AUP comes with an unlocked phone (att won't be unlocked until you've paid it off) and with the att offer you have to turn in an iPhone 6, 6+, 6s, or 6s+. If you have a low GB 6 or 6+ to trade in it's a good deal, especially if you live out all 24 payments.

Thanks for the response. Decided to keep my old 6+. Always handy to have a spare smart phone around the house and I do like the flexibility of an unlocked device. But this is an awesome deal and have passed it on to the rest of my family members

I wasn't fully expecting to upgrade until next year. But I saw this offer and its basically trading in my 64gb iPhone 6 non-S for $650 and its hard to pass that up .

ButI was concerned about what would happen when I want to upgrade in 2017. I had questions around whether I would receive the full 24 months of reimbursement even if I was using a different phone in 12 months so I hit up their chat department.

They said that as long as it is 'on my account' I would continue to get the credit. I had to clarify what that meant. Basically as long as it wasn't traded in, paid off early, or registered with another carrier then I would continue to get the reimbursement over the entire term. Even if the phone was no longer being used and was replaced. I would need to upgrade to the 2017 phone via unlocked/non-upgrade to continue to get that reimbursement. I could do the trade in 2017 but I'd have to pay the phone off early and lose half the credits to do that.

Does this sound right to everyone else?

Yes, that is what I fully expect to happen. Next is just a payment plan on a loan from AT&T. As long as you have not paid off the loan, or cancelled the loan by doing an upgrade through them, then you are still going to be making monthly Next payments and be getting monthly credits until the phone is paid off. I intend to buy the 2017 phone, assuming is a big redesign, via Apple Upgrade Plan or full price out right. The only way this could screw us over is if there is an even better Next offer in 2017 requiring an iPhone 7 trade in. Then we would have to miss out on that deal (or do an early payout of this deal which would negate some of the benefit). However, I fully expect this to be the last such "free phone" offer since this was hastily put together this morning in response to TMobile and Verizon's deals and not fully thought out. I think AT&T is going to be taking a bath on all of these trade ins. No way they are losing less money by giving everyone $650 vs losing a few people to TMobile because of TMobile's free phone offer.
