So one of my lines that has an iPhone 3G says that it will be upgrade eligible on August 6th. That means that I can get the $199 pricing as of tomorrow, right?

Major props to AT&T by the way!

YEP!!!

I called AT&T, and they gave me the upgrade price!!! I had a December eligibility ( but over the $99/month phone bill) and she said yes, that I would get my 32GB for $299.

All it took was a phone call (dial 611 from your phone)
I would double check that if I were you. Paying over $99 month usually does afford you the one year upgrade cycle, but you say you weren't upgrade eligible until this December. Did you last receive/purchase a phone last December? I ask because it's not the fact that you pay over $99 month; its that you pay that AND had your upgrade date coming up in July, August, or September.

I'm not trying to kill your joy at all, but I've had more experiences then I care to count where I was told something by a customer service rep, and they were misinformed. They've even notated things on the account, and where I get to the store, the manager has told me he's not obligated to follow them. Guess we'll all know tomorrow once AT&T updates their system.

Right all 2G phones had a 2yr contract but the phone was not subsidized. The 3G phone is subsidized so that is why AT&T wants you to fulfill your contract to get new customer pricing or spend enough monthly >$100 to reduce your fulfillment time to 12-18 months.

Right, you had to sign a two year contract, but you qualified to buy a new phone at any time at the subsidized rate and extend that contract. With the 3G came out, you could buy for $199 regardless of when you bought the 2G.

Are you going to be able to get it on launch day though? I heard every place is out of preorders.

Well maybe you're kinda right depending on where you live.....worst case I'll order it on launch and get it after.....so we can call it a inside the park home run :)

Well I don't pay enough per month I guess so it's not until March '10 for meeeeeeeeeeee but oh well, good news for some and I am surprised ATT did this even though they certainly didn't have to.
I can still use Hubby's upgrade in August I guess. :D
Congrats to those that fall under this new pricing!

Wait so if my phone bill is $160 for both my wife and I, does that mean we are eligible? The ATT rep told me I would be fine but didnt mention anything about how much I pay for my bill.

If your current "Upgrade" Status indicates that you would be "Upgrade Eligible" in July, August or Sept. then you will qualify as of tomorrow in the AT&T systems.

The discussion of how much you spend per month is just one way to get to the "Upgrade Eligible" state earlier. It is on a per line basis and not your total bill for all lines.

What about the poster, I think his name is "Diode", who received the upgrade even though he's not eligible until December and only spends $70 a month?

The page says...

You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing. Additional discounts may be available on 04/03/2010

So do I have to pay $499 or what?

the rep. i talked to didn't even know what the press release was. he put me on hold to come back with *NEW# and offered to try and 'secure an early upgrade of 499'. dude sounded like he was high as a kite.

i'll call back later, i guess. those who were successful, please let me know what you said, ty.

Where are the chest pounders now???????? " You signed a contract" "Don't you know how subsidies work?"........and my personal favorite "You guys just don't understand basic business concepts"........

Figured they would show their faces....

oh they have been. and they've been exposed as the bitter whiners they really are.

I bought a pair of iPhone 3Gs on launch day. One's eligible in December, the other in March. Our bill is about $140 monthly. I've been an AT&T (Cingular) customer for 8 years or so now, so I guess they decided I wasn't going anywhere and didn't give me a July/Aug/Sept eligibility date.

Update: went to att store. he said he has no idea until tomorrow, but it is NOT case by case, but only done through the system. i mentioned people online calling AT&T and getting that result - he said it's very unlikely and a result of misreading the press release. he also said you had to buy in June, July, or August, and have a plan of $99+. that's a plan, not a bill. my bill is almost $99, but my plan is $80 (data, unlimited text, voice). i think i remain screwed.

I posted this in another thread.

I had both a manager and supervisor of ATT tell me that the monthly charges are calculated as follows:

Your monthly minutes plan
Your data plan

Your texts, other services, taxes do not count.

So for me I have never paid less than about 120.00 and it creaps into the 140s each month.

I have 60.00 voice
30.00 data

They ignore the 8.99 I pay for texting, the 16.99 for early nights and weekends and the 9.99 I pay for another line.

worse since my iphone "only" has 9.99 for the other line and 30.00 for data and 8.99 for data I am even less than 68.00 because of their shadiness when I added another line-- they moved all of the major charges to the new line so I am not even eligible for an upgrade until March 2010.

I am very pissed-- but right now it is what it is (I am writing to CEO, SVP of Customer Service, etc).

Oh and also for the person with the two iPhones-- it is because more than likely each iPhone is not at 99.00 and the one that is for 2010 is because it is less than 68.00 and thus only eligible in 21 months for an upgrade.

No you get to pay the "No Commitment" pricing of $599 / $699.

So, what if you still aren’t eligible for our best upgrade pricing and you still want iPhone 3G S now? You do have options:

You may qualify for the iPhone 3G S early upgrade price of $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB).
  • You can pay full retail — and not have to sign a 2-year contract — at $599 (16GB) or $699 (32GB).
  • You can wait until you’re eligible for our best upgrade pricing.
We invite you to check your upgrade eligibility by visiting www.att.com/iphone, calling *NEW# (*639#) on your AT&T device (we’ll send you a text with upgrade information), or visiting any of our over 2,200 stores

AT&T is only giving people eligible for upgrade in July/Aug/Sept. the chance to upgrade as of tomorrow for $199/$299 instead of making them wait until July, August or September. So at most, AT&T is giving a bonus 3 months.

If you aren't ready until after that, well, you'll just have to wait.

And that is how contracts work. I'm not any more pleased about it, but nonetheless that's how subsidized phones work.

It's calculated per line? That could explain it. My primary line is $90 and the secondary is $50, minus $5 or so each if you exclude texts. That sounds like something AT&T would do.

they do not ignore texting.

see: 80$ plan for me (voice, data, unlimited texting)

Xerenthar just sharing what they shared with me. I was on the phone for over an hour talking with CSR, Supervisor and then manager.

The CSR rep didnt know that information, but it was the manager who REALLY clarified it for me about the plan (i.e. no texting, no other early nights weekends).

I find it complete BS because with my "plan" I am still paying over 99.00 as evidenced by the bill history summaries in my wireless account.

I am even more angered that they wont rectify what the store screwed up when adding the other line. So I am doubly screwed.
