Well, at least all of the major outlets are now reporting on this issue (Engadget, Gizmodo, etc). Apparently, AT&T has announced that an official announcement is imminent (why they have to announce that they are going to make an announcement is beyond me). But if they have to take time to prepare for an announcement on this, is that a good sign or bad sign?

Downloads are good here (Quad Cities), but uploads are still in the gutter:

It usually is a bad sign. "Quick, how do we spin this so that it doesn't make it look so bad, or our fault?"

This silly thread... it's a regional thing... New Orleans, LA speeds are still uploads of 1.6Mb/s

It was not too long ago, you had people helping you on your sim test theory. Why do you come in smacking around when you don't even suffer the upload issue like those of us in this thread? Furthermore, what evidence (please do share) do you have to support your claim?

No, you took a speed test of AT&T's network in the middle of a congested place, on a mid day with people all over the place. It is obvious you will get congested results. Ariwaves aren't unlimited you know.

Please, fill me in on more of your theory on why I am only uploading <100kbps, and cannot (like many in this thread) break the 99 up barrier. Enlighten me.

Or that's my conclusion based on my 1.1mbits/sec upload speed test: http://www.betanews.com/joewilcox/a...3G-data-uploads-in-my-neighborhood/1278443929

I can't believe that you're a blogger who makes a conclusion based on your own experience limited to your own location that's not even listed on our topic. Nice job on nicely avoiding to mention that about 30 markets in the U.S. are affected with this issue.
Again, good job on fair reporting all in hope to get more hits.
SAD.

Occam's Razor is still subjective, and you are wrong about congestion causing the issue. Here is some evidence:

1) The issue started *before* the holiday weekend for some of the markets (including mine). The thread itself may have not started until the beginning of the weekend, but some of us noticed the problem a day or two earlier.

2) If it was congestion, we would have highly variable results with speeds all over the place. However, the great majority of those who have reported in are seeing speeds no higher than 100 kbps up. Download speeds are fine.

3) If it was congestion, we wouldn't see users from many markets reporting a highest upload speed of 100 kbps but in other markets that are unaffected remaining at the 1000-1600 kpbs range. I do not live in a congested market at all and my upload speed went from 1600 kbps to 100 kpbs suddenly.

4) If it was just congestion from the 4th of July holiday, then why is it still happening today as everything is getting back to normal? At the very least, we'd start seeing upload speeds increase. However, my upload speed is still at 90-100 kbps.

5) If it was congestion, we would see variable results depending on what time of day the test was run. However, I've run speed tests in the middle of the night and the speed is still capped at ~100 kbps.

My application of Occam's Razor would indicate that the simplest answer is that AT&T is throttling upload speeds in many markets right now. We don't know why, but Gizmodo and others have reported that AT&T is going to make an announcement some time soon:

Speeds are very fast and very good here. I am seeing averages of 2-3.5 Mbps download / 1.2 Mbps upload. Here is a recent speedtest:

I'm not a Network Engineer, but is it possible that AT&T may have HSUPA shut off in the markets having upload issues to cut hardware and or software over to support HSPA+? It seems to me that the areas currently working are "full speed" and from my personal experience last week I was only getting fast data in a few select places near Detroit. (Maybe some areas had "test" towers in place, but they decided to upgrade the whole region?)

Just a thought.....

This makes the most sense to me. In St. Louis, I experienced phenomenal speeds up and down last week, but Thursday night there was a huge drop. Now I'm stuck with between 100 and 250k upload, 1500-1800 download. Prior, was getting anywhere from 3 to 5M down, 1.2 to 2M up. It appears they've turned off HSDPA and HSUPA in many or most markets.

I think perhaps they experienced some trouble in many markets (remember the issues people were having with 3G grinding to a halt at times?) and decided to turn HSDPA and HSUPA off and address the problems. That leaves us wondering how long it will take to fix...

By the way, a point for everyone wondering why their iPads and 3GS phones are "stuck" with 250k upload speeds... they aren't equipped with HSDPA and HSUPA capable circuitry. The iP4 is the only mobile Apple product with the faster capabilities.

HSPA+ requires a lot more work at the cell site, it's not an easy upgrade the way HSUPA and HSDPA are. So, no, I wouldn't think HSPA+ is involved here, but I could see them turning off HSUPA and HSDPA (or it being shut off)...

mutherfking as_shole AT&T. I'm so fc_king done with APPLE AND AT&T.

The iPhone 4 has HSUPA radio and can hit over 1.5Mbps easily on a good-great signal strength on AT&T's network.

Right now, I am getting 90Kbps upload. This is just sh__it the last straw.

(ran a series of 8 tests back to back with a 5 bar signal and the average I'm getting for upstream rate is around 90Kbps)

What a crock of sh_it to cripple yet another iPhone on AT&T's network.
That is not bad I am getting average of 65 Kbps in Phoenix.

Wish I have ever come close to what most of you get.Got better during weekend but has now gone back to what it was before almost like they are playing with caps all the time.
Tired of it think of moving to Verizon.

So I guess mine is worse than bad?

I keep seeing these posts of "slow" download and upload speeds, so I thought I'd try to see what my results were. Horrible! Maybe we should start a thread to see who has the slowest speeds. Should I bring this back to store?

Thanks.

Definitely not the iphone problem. If you bought it in AT&T store, bring it there and complain your way into getting a free month or something. This is sad to say the least. Apple has nothing to do with this, raeally. Users in different countries are doing great in terms of 3G bandwidth.

Your download is high though.

Edit:

my pings are WAY down, and my speeds are still down.
Before: Full speeds, low ping
After: Low Speeds, high ping
Now: low speeds, low ping.

Download speed used to hit close to 5mbps, and upload close to 1.7mbps. Ping was about 100ms lower. The upload cap is choking everything. I really do not care about my download speed. i Would be happy with 1.5mbps, as long as i can get that 1.5mbps upload and the lowest ping possible. Ping times largely influence your browsing experience.
I hardly talk on the phone and the internet is the most important feature for me. Att just decided to murder the whole experience. Hopefully not for too long.

I have logged my complaints to people pretty high up in AT&T Wireless Technical Support. If this problem isn't resolved soon I have setup so that I'll be receiving a phone call from an AT&T Wireless Business Data Technical Support Manager. I promise, I will get answers!!!!
