I hate to add more, but I've found that my download speeds are about 500kbs lower when used in my RIGHT hand as opposed to my left. Ive tested it about 10 times or so each hand. Has anyone else tested this. Also, this isn't any type of a "death grip" just the normal way you'd hold the phone when holding it vertically.

I don't see a change (i took my case off) - man, this iPhone 4 is nothing but trouble. Sad, but 2010 is a bad year for apple's iPhone so it seems.

I think you are doing this all wrong... Your basing your info off of 1 days worth of data. I am in Atlanta and I am getting DL speeds of about 2000kbps and upload averaging about 1200kbps.

Its a weekend, and 4th of July weekend on top of it... more people are using their phones than any other time. Chill out!

From Saint Paul, MN closest server is in South Dakota.

This was the slowest, typical download 1100kbps and upload 80kbps but I'm having problems uploading that picture... hitting the test button with phone on the couch, no human contact.

mutherfking as_shole AT&T. I'm so fc_king done with APPLE AND AT&T.

The iPhone 4 has HSUPA radio and can hit over 1.5Mbps easily on a good-great signal strength on AT&T's network.

Right now, I am getting 90Kbps upload. This is just sh__it the last straw.

(ran a series of 8 tests back to back with a 5 bar signal and the average I'm getting for upstream rate is around 90Kbps)

What a crock of sh_it to cripple yet another iPhone on AT&T's network.

Just go already. More bandwidth for the rest of us.

Mine is all over the map. No rhyme or reason; I'm not drawing any conclusions from a dozen tests over the course of a few minutes one night.

Here's last week's results, and the results from tonight.

Thank you. And thanks for brining this matter to light. I truly hope it's a one day july 4th special. 100kbps upstream is beyond bad; especially for an iPhone 4.

I wonder if steve jobs will wake up and find out he can't send more than 100kbps speeds, he'll think about leaving AT&T.

;)

I think you're still good. The fact that your uploads even crossed 100kbps is a good sign. Where are you located?

On average, your speeds look pretty good.

Suffolk County, Long Island (south shore) reporting in. Yup, looks like it's capped.

Just did tests on my network, everything is fine.
Also, you can see comparisson tests from previous days. Data streams stays closely the same on both ocassions.

is there a clause in our contract that adresses 3g performance? surely ATT can't change the network performance without breaking some sort of clause right?

Even if you have a breech of contract by AT&T, where are you going to take the iPhone 4? In the USA, we get shafted no matter where we go. Sigh, i'm calling it a night. Going to go cry about it alone tonight.

Keep everyone updated with your speed for July 5th.

I cant help but to notice that on almost everyones screenshot there isnt any bars really. And if that "fix" will technically lower it...Thats not good at all :(

Here has been all my 3g results. VERY spotty to say the least. Not quite sure I can come down to the conclusion of ATT throttling down uploads

I have highlighted the upload speed column. I have tried out a variety of servers as well

The 0-0 results is when I bridged that darn antenna when holding it in my left hand in a normal manner... no reception issues eh?

True though what I would do is leave ATT and sell my ip4 for well more than the subsidized price I paid for it and then get it for Vz at the subsidized price in Jan lol

Five bars here in Seatte. Below first test is from a different local about 30 miles away but the speeds are pretty near what I got when I tested in Seattle a few hours earlier. The second test is within seattle.

Damn OP I thought you were trolling but sho' nuff I went and checked my speeds.

L.O.L
Guess it was good while it lasted. (Hops back on Wifi).

I am starting to think this is a result of the backhauling they are doing

from
http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/2857/64/

AT&T's 2G network, Edge, has been available a lot longer than HSPA and is available just about anywhere cell phone coverage is for AT&T. Edge has a maximum of about 100K upload and download, but the typical speeds are 50K - 80K. When HSPA is not available, your HSPA modem or phone will automatically connect to Edge if available. While considerably slower than 3G HSPA, Edge is a huge boon to travelers - if you find yourself in a remote location with no HSPA you'll still be able to remain connected!

Emphasis mine though it doesn't explain the high DL speed we are getting though it DOES seem to fit with the upload scenario

Just doesn't seem to make sense to limit it while upgrading to faster networks....
How fast is HSPA?

With a solid signal in a 3G-covered area, AT&T HSPA users can expect to see average download speeds of 700-1700kbps and approximately 500-1200kbps upload (HSPA has high "theoretical maximum speeds", but those estimates do not represent ACTUAL speeds users typically experience). This is comparable to EVDO Rev-A from Sprint and Verizon.

Here is some food for thought. AT&T knows this weekend will have high usage and they have a limited amount bandwidth for SMS, voice call, and data demands. They need to keep service running well so they cap the data in the upload direction to give extra bandwidth to the other services. They choose upload because overall very little data is uploaded compared to down load. A 1 Meg file would only need bytes of data uploaded to get it.

Most of the stuff we do on the net is downloaded. Very little is uploaded in terms of amount. 100kbs is still higher faster than the bottle neck for emails sent out on the iPhone which would be txt most of the time so it would be 2-4 kb.

I think the op is making a big deal out of nothing

NYC, Central Jersey, Boston, Orlando, Seattle, South Jersey/Philly, Columbus, Cleveland, West Houston, Phoenix!

AT&T WISHES YOU A HAPPY 4th OF JULY, EVERYONE!!!

+1 for Seattle. This truly sucks. I constantly got 1.2~1.3 Mbps upload speed last week. Now it's down to about 100 kbps. AT&T was treating me right... until this very moment! Ugh.

It's as if they're throttling SpeedTest.net servers more so than others. If I use Xtreme Labs speed test app upload results are a bit better (~220Kbps). Also I tried uploading a 2,849,823 byte file via ReaddleDocs to a webdav server. It took 83 seconds which is roughly 275 Kbps.
