I'm actually not sure about the "$100 a month" assumption many on here are talking about...

I bought the iPhone 3G and signed a contract about 3 months before the 3GS launched. On the day of 3GS launch, i went to apple and got the 3GS and i was offered a partial subsidized phone with a renewal of my 2 year contract. So I renewed and got the phone for 399 or whatever it was(32gb).
My full subsidized upgrade eligibility was set at 11/20/2010 when I checked about a month ago.
Just checked it again this past week and it's now changed to 5/20/2010..way sooner than it previously was, even sooner than all the others with June dates..doesn't seem to make much sense, but I'm not complaining!
I also pay ~$95 a month, never at or over $100 though. Recently changed my monthly payment method to automatically come out of my checking account...not sure if that helped anything or not. Also, never paid a bill late or had any overage charges...maybe that also affects things..who knows?

This date bump thing seems quite arbitrary to me.

Mine states this:

iPhone Upgrade
As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/19/2010

I get a full discount on 5/21/10 on my line. My wife get hers on 9/18/10.

Kinda odd considering the last time we upgraded we both got the Vu on the same day.

Yeah, I know.... a Vu. thank goodness I saw the light!

Do you have a 3G or 3GS?

Anyone else have any luck with their date changes?

I called AT&T yesterday and tried to ask about moving my date up from 09/21/10 to June and they said they couldn't do it cause my monthly bill was not over $100.00 before taxes.

This seems unfair to a lot of people like me cause I got my 3G back in 4/09 and it seems like a lot of people who got a 3GS on the launch date are now eligible.

Has anyone had any luck with threatening to cancel their service unless they were moved up? It seems like a long shot but could work.

Why would you even bother until the phone is released? (or at the very least announced) And I've found more often than not that AT&T calls your bluff on that. Not like Sprint.

LOL You're going to cancel because they dont give you what you want? lol, and how is it unfair......

some people have the attitudes of little kids, gimme gimme gimme, god it's sad....I need to leave the planet

No Im not gonna cancel but I saw a post earlier in this thread where a guy said that he talked about canceling and the AT&T rep moved his date up. I was just curious if anyone else tried that. I should have made that more clear.

I think its unfair since I got my phone in 4/09 but people who got the 3GS in 6/09 can now update. If I would have known that would have happend I would have got a 3GS instead of holding out for this years phone.

Youre right though, I am acting like a kid haha. I just want to get the newest iPhone as soon as I can and still save some money cause my 3G is barely holding on right now.

From what we can tell it's happening in waves. Sit back and be patient. If it isn't there by the time the new phone is announced, then perhaps make your argument to AT&T.

I currently use a regular data plan on my 3GS with changing the APN. If I add the iphone plan, will I get the upgrade date change?

Yeah I didn't think about that. Anything could change from now til June.

Just curious though has anyone else had the upgrade date change this week?

I got my 3GS on launch day and so far my upgrade date is still 11/20... Really hoping it gets moved up though i would like to have one on launch day

Ehh I'm planning on getting an early upgrade anyway. Did that for the 3G
What do you mean early upgrade, the reason I'm asking is my family switch to AT&T in August 2009. I have the iPhone 3GS, I'm giving my mom it so I wanted to get the new iPhone HD whatever the name going to be. I chat with on there site when my upgrade is they said 4/2011 of next year :(

so if you do the early upgrade do you just sign another 2year contract with them? and do you pay the full price of it or do you get it for the price of when you first sign up let just say $299.00?

From what I have read this means they will knock off $200.00 on the iPhone and renew your contract for 2 more years. Im hoping as we get closer AT&T announces a way more people will be eligible but as of right now this looks like the only option for me and a lot of other people.

To check your upgrade status just call *NEW# or #639# (no cost) from the AT&T phone line that you want to check, you will get a free AT&T system txt message that provides your projected upgrade date.

Yes, there is a disclaimer, for example if you miss a payment your date moves out 6 months, if you have not paid your current bill you will be reminded to pay.

An early upgrade with a reduced subsidy is offered when you have passed the 12 month mark but might not qualify for a full subsidy since you don't spend more then $99.99 MRC per month. In this case you will be offered and early upgrade with a reduced subsidy. I always explain it as: take the lowest full subsidy pricing and add $200 to get to the early upgrade pricing.

Yes, this also means that you will sign a new two-year commitment to replace your current contract. It does not add 2 more years to your current contract. :)

Dave,

You mentioned being eligible for a full subsidy if you spend over $99.99. This might be to late but if I change my rate plan and push my bill over $99.99 will that make me eligible for a full upgrade since I have been on AT&T for over a year?

Im just trying to figure out the best option to get a new iPhone since my 3G is falling apart. Thanks a lot.

First it depends on when your billing cycle is for May (more on that later). The greater than $99.99 is only the Monthly Recurring Charges (MRC) per line, it is not your total bill amount for your line or even the total for your account. Also, it does not include shared features, just voice, and select features (AT&T gets to pick which features qualify) and yes the iPhone data plan is really a feature and it does count toward the MRC.

Next, it is based on a 3 month rolling average so if you still had a May payment due and then a June payment you might get close to the average but it is simple math so you can calculate it out to see if it works for you. So if you had made a change in early April and you had April, May and June billing cycles, you would be better positioned. Again if you are only paying $69.99 for voice and iPhone data on your line, you are not likely to make the cut by the current rumored launch date.

It is not magic, it is based on AT&T recovering their subsidy on high MRC accounts within 12 months.

Dave

Back in April, I changed my rate plan so that my total services before taxes was over $100. A week after making my first payment, my upgrade date changed to 6/20.

A few days ago, I changed my rate plan back to 450 minutes because 900 minutes is severely overkill for me. As you know, AT&T allows us to now change the effective date for any changes. I changed the effective date to be back to the start of the billing month so that I only had one month in at the 900 minutes. My upgrade date is still at 6/20.

I am wondering if they changed my upgrade date not because of my increase in monthly spending but because that's what they were doing for some people as this thread suggests. It was probably just a coincidence that they did it at the same time I changed my rate plan since I had heard that you had to have three months in of spending $100 or more per month before they changed the upgrade date.

...upgrade date is still at 6/20...
Just remember that your Eligible Upgrade date a calculated date and is a date when you may quailfy for a subsidy. Many are suprised every year, after the initial original iPhone launch which did not have a subsidy, when they did not qualify and you may or may not quailfy depending on when your monthly billing date is for May and June. Just because it shows 6/20/2010 today does not mean that it might not change on or before 6/20/2010.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

Hey Dave thanks for the reply.

Since I just payed for May it looks like this wouldn't help me until June with the 3 month rolling average. Hopefully I can still do an early upgrade for the new iPhone.

Does anyone remember last year if they would allow early upgrade for the 3GS on the launch day?

Yes, last year 09 and also July 08, if you qualifed for an early upgrade, you just paid $200 more the the lowest subsized price. Last year, you could even pre-order on announce day and have it delivered to your home on launch day rather then stand in line.

Random comment: There was a great UPS tracking tread that kept many of us up late tracking our flights from China. :D

Dave

When I say early upgrade, I will be paying 399/499 price, considering the pricing structure doesn't change. I'm not expecting a 199/299 price since I don't have the iphone data plan on my line, so I don't think my upgrade status will change.
