That’s not my experience. I pick up phone swipe up and boom it’s open. Don’t wait for the lock to unlock. Just look at phone as you swipe up. Feels like all one function now.
Which phone are you comparing it to? I have the 8Plus and my gf has the X. FaceID isn’t slow but it’s just not as fast as TouchID. Especially when pulling them out of my pocket. TouchID can be unlocked before FaceID even has a chance.

Demand does not equal revenue. A lot of demand is plus folks thinking the X will meet their needs. I suspect return rates are also strong.

They’re not. Source? On top of working a corporate job, I also work part time at a VERY high volume Apple store.

2000+ phones sold between Friday to Saturday around noon (finally sold out then). Absolutely no returns from anyone. Actually I lied...ONE (1) return from a person who’s kid lied about how much the phone cost and used daddy’s CC to get it.

Try the other way round - swipe up without waiting for anything (the equivalent of pressing TouchID) - Face ID will then authenticate you. Doing it that way round makes for a seamless process unlike 'wait for unlock, then swipe'

^He gets it

I’m very aware of swiping up without waiting. Still not faster than TouchID on the 8Plus side by side comparison. What phone are you comparing your X to?

It's not much slower. After using my X for a few days, Face ID has met my expectations. So if it's more secure and allows for a bigger screen without enlarging the device (the Plus models are way too big for my liking), I'll take it.
You’re right, it’s not much slower but it’s noticeable enough to be mentioned.

Yup, except for the FaceID not working as smoothly as I had hoped, its been a fantastic phone. I have no regrets, and I fully expect apple to improve FaceID.

I also turned off attention awareness and Require Attention for FaceID. I'll see if that improves the performance.
I don't know if it's just wishful thinking on my part or what, but FaceID seems to be getting faster and faster over the last few days. It's almost instant on mine. The first morning I woke up and I was laying sideways it's didn't work until I sat up. Now it's working while laying down so dunno.

No, I wasn't intending to disagree or compare - just offering something that I don't think a lot of people have realised yet - you don't need to wait for authentication before you swipe.

Yes you are correct. You can unlock your phone in any position or at any distance via your fingerprint with TouchID. As long as you can reach your phone, you can unlock it.

In that regard, Face ID will never be that fast (unless you want a larger notch). Face ID has a forward facing array of cameras, so people (not you) getting huffy over not being able to unlock it from severe angles are just singing songs IMHO.

Now what I will say is that the time from pocket to actually “USING” (ie. physically interacting with) your phone is exactly the same for both TouchID v2 and Face ID.

“Highly anticipated launch,” yet you couldn’t activate my phone for...5 hours...

When did I ever say it had anything to do with demand? You keep asking what’s my point and it’s written right there for you buddy. TWICE!! Figure it out, you got this.

The article is about iPhone X demand and you put a random comment about FaceID being slower then Touch ID.. Then you turn around and say your comment has nothing to do with iPhone X demand.... so you can see the confusion it can create...

Now that you made it clear it was just a random observation on your part, now all is ok in macrumors universe....

Have a great day ahead..

Since I don’t use my phone inside pocket I still bring it out and look at it to use it. As I bring to look at it I just swipe up and it’s open. I don’t Wait for lock, just one fluid motion. Can’t compare side to side my 7 Plus is headed back to AT&T.

End result I am quite happy with the X. Check out the Displaymate review regarding screen. And play the Vimeo video of Australia. Just gorgeous. Look it up as 8K HDR in Vimeo.

Were you doing it in store? If so, you were more than likely on Apple Store WiFi which was saturated to the brim with folks not only activating their new X, but also every other iPhone model sold (and iPad/Mac). Everyone was having trouble.

Akin to being at an event with thousands of people and not being able to make a phone call due to line/data saturation. WiFi can only support so many connections at a time before a “turn based” system goes into play which, unfortunately, might be longer than cellphone activation timeouts.

Except that FaceID is slower than TouchID.

I'll have to call BS. Do you own an X?

For me, the TouchID on my 7 would frequently not read my fingerprints. For Face ID, you swipe up and it's instantly logged in. The actual authentication is much quicker.

What I am having a hard time adjusting to is no home button period. I also think the bottom app tray doesn't need to be there anymore. Seems out of place and reinforces old habits of looking for a home button. I find myself appreciating the bottom navigation buttons on Android a little more. Just something to get used to I guess. The X is an awesome device.

The first comment I made was a response to someone else. Not a random comment on the thread. But yes, all is good. Enjoy your day as well

Can you use the phone without Face ID? I have absolutely no desire to use Face ID, and it is probably the main thing keeping me in my iPhone 6 at the moment.

ok, sorry, I missed this comment of yours about actual hands on time. I thought you were referring to authentication speed. That I find to be quicker and smoother(?). When it comes to muscle memory and your personal workflow / use, I'll concede, Face ID feels awkward at first. Especially after 10 years of hitting a home button. Still, its a sufficiently new enough device and experience that if I was considering the 8 or X, I would go X.

I'm just happy that it fits my cupholder again! :)

My demand for the iPhone X is also strong. Pre ordered at 3am (midnight PST) on launch day, was checked out by 3:05.

AT&T effed up my order and after spending hours (literally 6-7 hours) on the phone with various levels of support, getting hung up on idk how many times, their answer is: “we will cancel your order and re-submit, but it’ll put you at the bottom of the queue.”

Gee thanks. Glad I did everything right and still got screwed by Ma Bell.
