YESSSS i got them to waive the fee!!!!! wooo getting the new iphone tomorrow!!

after 1 call, and 4 chat attemps, i got them to give me a 250 credit!
this is what the CSR said (online)
"In regards to the cost of the iphone it cannot be changed. If you go to purchase the phone you will be paying the early upgrade pricing. However, as a 1 time courtesy I can apply a $250 credit to your account. Please be advised this is a one 1 time courtesy and and will not be applied if you want to perform an early upgrade on any of the other lines"

Im assuming that means i will never be able to get the "courtesy" again but i think its only for early upgrade fees...either way, just keep trying and you will get it waived!! soooo happy right now!!!

Sweet! Welcome to the club LOL!

Going to talk to AT&T about this...
I bought iPhone 4S about a year ago and it's really not working very well.
I will be adding a line and interested in upgrading my 4S to 5. So, if ATT will issue 250 dollars credit on my bill, I will be more than willing to do this.
I pay about 92 dollars a month for 2 iphones now, but it will be like 125 dollars a month with 3 lines.

Wish me luck... calling soon. Any advices? Should I even mention than you guys are getting a credit or should I just ask and keep trying until they bend?

I been with AT&T since 2006, so that's about 6-7 years.

the people that were successful with the 250 dollar credit, did you guys actually pay the early upgrade fee to get the iphone 5? I'm just wondering because I would like to get the credit as well.

Been on hold for 20 minutes. They are "looking" into it. I have very low hopes considering how many times I have tried. They have probably noted the account each time and will probably just deny me again.

It worked for me :) I told them I was upset about having to pay the 250 dollar extra fee and that I had heard a few o my friends had got credit back which was unfair considering I paid full price. Lady was very nice and very helpful no questions asked, process took less than 5 minutes

They wouldn't waive the early upgrade fee for me. They said that fee is what allows me to get the phone at a discounted price, therefore it's required.

What I'm pissed about is I paid $250 early upgrade fee for the iPhone 5, which also put me on a new 2-year contract. They won't unlock my 4s because I have only had it for one year, and they can only unlock after two years. Doesn't make sense if I'm paying for an upgrade fee for a new phone and new contract yet my 4s is still bound by the 2-year rule. Ridiculous.

They unlocked my 3GS because I signed a new contract for my 5. I've had my 3GS for about 20 months.

So you want a phone that costs you $-50?

I haven't upgraded yet... I will though as soon as more are in stock from Target.

Just tell them that a couple of your friends have been receiving a 1 time courtesy credit of $250 and see if that works. I would definitely mention that other people are getting this credit.

you still pay the early upgrade fee but you get the credit on your account...so in essense you are paying only 199

yeah i would say other people have been, when i mentioned that they said they could waive it

Well played all - good to hear! Where exactly did you access the online chat? Could you share a link? Thanks!

This was the same approach I took. I didn't tell them that I was upset. I just said my "friends" were able to get the $250 credit. The process did take longer for me and I was transferred to someone else.

Used the online chat and I got a $50 credit!

Tried sweet talking the CSR about getting rid of my $250 early upgrade fee but didn't work. Not pushing my luck.

We are all friends here. Congrats on the credit!

I'm an AT&T plus member. I've been with ATT since 2005, when I got my first phone, a Moto Razr V3xx. I'm on a family plan. The plan holder, my dad, has been with ATT since 1998. I didn't get charged the $36 upgrade fee when I bought my iPhone 5, and apparently, if I wanted to upgrade early, my $250 fee would've been waived too. These are benefits of being an AT&T plus member. I think ATT reps are able to refund such fees because of the ATT plus program.

um no. i had to pay a 250 dollar extra for the early upgrade. so the phone cost me almost 500.

Oh ok. You made it sound like you didn't pay the $250 upgrade fee.

Is the $250 extra we paid a 1 year update fee or 2 year update fee? What reasoning did you guys use to get this waived? Seems unlikely mostly due to AT&T and Apple contract restrictions.

This doesn't make sense. Nobody really knows what the contract entails, but it doesn't seem reasonable that this would be in it. It's a credit to the service bill. That money doesn't come from Apple. Apple gets the same amount for EVERY iPhone regardless of whether or not there is a subsidy. Actually, this is in Apple's best interest, as if people are able to get this discount, more people will buy iPhones and Apple will be more profitable.

If it were APPLE giving credits onto ATT bills, then a contract restriction would make sense as an explanation as to why it's not possible. But not this way. What ATT does with customers service bills is none of Apple's concern

You had to pay that because you signed a 2 year contract for a subsidized phone the year previous. If they do it for you feel fortunate but if they don't, don't get upset because you agreed to it a year ago.

Who said I was upset. I was just asking.

I called AT&T before I bought the phone and the rep said he would make a note to credit my account the $250 early upgrade fee. After I bought the phone I called back to confirm my $250 discount and they said they saw the notes but couldn't give me the discount because it wouldn't be approved.

What they did offer was 6 months off of my $30 month unlimited data plan, so $180 + taxes and the credit came to $201.00. It's not the $250 I was promised, but I'll take it.
