Got something!

So I called with the intent to have them unlock my 4S (I just upgraded to the 5, only owned the 4S for about 10 months).

My strategy was if they would not unlock my 4S that I would request the $250.

Here is what happened.

The CSR processed my request to unlock without question. I was kind of surprised by how easy it was, so then I just winged it and told him that a friend was discounted/credit $250 for his early upgrade fee. I purposely tried to ask the question as if I were confused, so the CSR paused for a second and said that fee is $36. I kinda played dumb and said ok well can you please waive that fee. Oddly the complete discount came out to $42?

Anyway, I was pleased with the call and decided to be happy with what I got. Now I can add a little more to my asking price for the 4S which is nice. Feeling pretty good about AT&T lately. I love that they grandfather "unlimited" data plans to LTE, just added very good LTE service to Philly, and that I got really good customer service when I called.

FYI. My bill after discount is only $86 p/month. I'm an enterprise customer.

I was able to get the same credit. I did it through chat. They also waived two of the three $36 upgrade fee.

Not only did I get the $250 credit on my account, but I also got a $25 instant credit, and the att representative reduced my unlimited texting from $20 a month to $10 a month for life for as long as I have a texting plan. I will now pay only $10 a month for unlimited texting. That is going to save me $120 a year on my bill!

I have been with ATT for 15 years, since 1997. I had to pay the $250 upgrade early upgrade fee but I did receive the $250 credit on my ATT bill

The unlimited texting for $10 a month for life plus the $25 instant credit and the $250 credit far exceeded my expectations of ATT. And I never complained all I called about was to inquire why my twelve-month eligibility had been changed to 18 months and that i was surprised to find out that I was going to have to pay $250 more to receive the new iPhone.

All in all I think I got a pretty sweet deal from AT&T.

Which chat did you do that through? I just tried through the billing chat, but no dice... Guy told me that they can't do it online.

^

same bad luck here.. Billing told me no
I'm guessing someone caught on to this and now they're gonna shut it down... Time for me to play hardball and talk about possible cancelation (which I was thinking about anyway). The ETF is less than the early upgrade fee for me, which is absolutely ridiculous...

no luck for me and I've been with them since 2004, my bill is over 150 every month and pay on time. Oh well, if Verizon wasn't so spotty at my house, I would seriously consider leaving.

Is it possible to request the waiver before you order or do you have to pull the trigger and order and then request?

Also, orders through Apple or ATT?

Hmm...I will try this eventually, but currently, I'm repeatedly getting a message that live chat agents are unavailable. I guess I'll try later! Good luck to those that are attempting. :)

AT&T billing chat was a no go. I even had the rep consult her manager, when she finally came back with an answer i was only able to get her to credit me the $36 activation fees. Looks as if this is a dead loophole. DARN.
Been with AT&T since 2005 with 5 lines and just recently switched to MobileShare. They dont see to care how old of a customer you are.

Just tried via chat and no dice for me either.

Corey Brewer: I've been with AT&T 4 years now and love the service. Buddy of mine told me he was able to have his account credited for a one time courtesy of $250.
Tyrone Goodman : I apologize, but that is not something AT&T does. Also, this line is not eligible for an upgrade so it would be just like a $250.00 credit.

I'm on with Tyrone right now lol... Hope it works better for me.

I did the online chat. I have a family plan (550 mins shared, unlimited text, one line unlimited data and second line 2GB data) with 19% NYC discount. Ordered the iPhone 5 via apple.com

Me: Hello, i see my bill this month is $184 instead of $141. Was I charged an activation fee for my phone upgrade?

AT&T Rep: I am very sorry that your bill was higher than you anticipated. I understand how shocking a high bill can be. I will review your account now and go over this bill with you.
AT&T Rep: You did not have an activation fee, you did have an upgrade fee.
AT&T Rep: This occurs anytime you upgrade your device at discounted pricing + 2 year commitment.

Me: My understanding was that I was being charged $250 more for the early upgrade and an additional two year contract but theres another fee?
Me: I have a friend who pointed this out to me and had the fees waived, is there anything you can do for me?

AT&T Rep: The $250.00 is in addition to the normal costs for upgrading at discounted pricing.
AT&T Rep: I can review your account today to see if such a credit could occur.

Me: thank you

AT&T Rep: I can credit this standard fee for you today as a one time courtesy for good payment history and account tenure since 2009. Please note that in the future the standard upgrade fee will apply to all upgrades at discounted pricing.
AT&T Rep: Please allow me 2-3 minutes to submit this credit for you today.

Me: thank you I appreciate it

AT&T Rep: I have also reviewed your account, and I can assure you that you are currently on the best value rate plan and features for you.
AT&T Rep: Your credit has been submitted and will affect your current balance due within 24-48 hours online.

Me: thank you, what is the amount of the credit?

AT&T Rep: That is $42.45 for the credit today.

Me: thank you. I appreciate AT&Ts great customer service

AT&T Rep: You are very welcome

Will this work if you haven't bought the phone yet? Does the $250 get credited to the account or the phone line itself?

I'm on with Tyrone right now lol... Hope it works better for me.

He wasn't budging at all. He literally stuck to the script
