So after over a full week of having esim, I can say with certainty I am getting better reception on ATT with an esim. Having said that though it's not like I was dropping calls or couldn't get data, all I am saying here is I am getting more bars, not necessarily better speeds or actual quality of service.

Depending on your phone carrier. If your carrier gives you alerts of missed calls when your phone is off, then you will get alerts of missed calls when you are currently on the other line. Every dual standby phone is like this.

My other carrier tells me I missed a call after I hang up the call, but not during.

Any idea if AT&T provides alerts of missed called when phone is off?

Had my primary line moved from the physical SIM to the eSIM today.

The store I went to in my hometown had never done it before, so I had to help them through the process. But it worked once we realize you had to be on Wi-Fi to complete the process. Weird but it worked…

Maybe I am just excited, but I feel like I’m getting better reception.

I have my phone set up with an AT&T eSIM and a Google Fi physical SIM. When I set my cellular data line to Google Fi, visual voice mail for my AT&T account doesn’t work. I don’t even get any kind of notification in this setup that I have a new voicemail. As soon as i switch cellular data back to AT&T all new voicemails suddenly show up. Is this working as intended? Or is my setup somehow messed up? If it is intended, is there another way to get notified about new voice mails?

I experienced something exactly like this on iOS 12.1.1, except AT&T was on the physical SIM and I tried both GigSky and Ubigi eSIMs for international data. Voicemail was "unavailable" and you had to call in to find out if there were messages.

The only hint I've seen about this is in an Apple Support document here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209044

That suggests "If data roaming is on for the number that uses cellular data, then Visual Voicemail and MMS will be disabled on your voice-only number" partway down the document. This kills the whole point of having international roaming data like Google FI or the GigSky/Ubigi eSIMs I tried! You need to have data roaming "enabled" for them to supply you data in another country, and this seems to kill visual voicemail.

The only way I can see international travel and Voicemail working OK at the moment (I'm out of the USA at least 6 months each year!) is instead of Google FI or a roaming eSIM, if I move AT&T to eSIM and then purchase local physical SIMs in each country I visited. Those would not need data roaming "enabled" by definition since they are local to the country of purchase, so Visual Voicemail should still work in that case?

Not sure if that behavior has changed with iOS 12.1.2, has anyone tried yet?

So i actually never noticed this, but I activated esim while i was in Canada just by scanning the QR code. My data and voice was set to Canada line, I had data roaming on but i wasn't really roaming since I was actually using a local sim, and my VVM for att never worked, however it never worked when I came to the US. I had to call ATT and have them fix it. I won't be back in Canada for a month so I will know then, but this is in fact weird. My Cad number doesnt have VVM just old school regular voicemail so i can't check here.

I travel a lot too. That's what my TMO line is for. Global unlimited flat-rate plan with LTE and no roaming charges. Ever since TMO started offering this type of plan, I have stopped needing to buy country specific SIM cards.
that is why i switched to tmo
Yup. New AW capability when you activate dual-sim; on ATT, it works:

Yeah I noticed that you can have multiple eSIM profiles in the Apple Watch now. Since I have the eSIM and the physical SIM in my phone both activate, there is the option in the Watch app is add a second eSIM profile to the Apple Watch.. Granted you can't have two profiles activate at the same time, but still excellent.

(The second carrier in this screenshot does not support Apple Watch, but if I put in my other carrier SIM in my phone it works perfectly)
will this work if i have 2 phones on the same carrier
I am using Verizon for voice and AT&T for data. When I’m on the phone, I do not have data. I have cellular data switching on, so I’m supposed to have data. Anyone have this problem?
try turning off volte on verizon
If anyone figures out how to use both numbers with iMessage, I'm all ears. I know I have had two iPhones, one on each carrier, and iMessage worked with both numbers. Only difference, two devices. I feel politics are in the way of this happening.
hardly political more like apple being apple
I actually don't think its the politics this time. I think its Apple being Apple and they think what's best for customers.
while apple might think they know whats best for customers in my case they typically dont
Physically printed ones on little blue cards, yes.

Through the app or by email. no.
i might stop by an at&t store and pick up an esim and see how the service is

I have the exact same set up as you: AT&T esim and Google Fi SIM and my visual voice works fine. When I switched from SIM to eSim with AT&T, I noticed that they entered in the IMEI of the digital sim (from the phone about screen) into their SIM set up software. It is probably because AT&T does not have your line configured for an iPhone.

I thought it was me only. I also feel better data speeds and reception using eSIM. May this is ios 12.1.1 or may be eSIM, but it is really better.

Not sure if GoMike was traveling internationally, but have you tried leaving the USA with this setup yet? If you're still in the USA and hitting AT&T towers directly that may be why Visual Voicemail still works for you. Or maybe this is because you were running the betas or final for iOS 12.1.2?

I've been outside the USA for the last month and unfortunately I had to turn off my roaming eSIMs (GigSky and Ubigi) in order to get AT&T Visual Voicemail to start working again on my XS running iOS 12.1.1.

Would really love to figure out how to get my Visual Voicemail to work while using these roaming data-only eSIMs. If not I might try transferring my AT&T line to eSIM when I return to the USA a few months from now. Then just start buying local SIMS for each country I visit and see if that allows VVM to work properly with AT&T.

Did you go to corporate owned stores or authorized resellers?

If you went to four different corporate owned stores then that is bad, really bad.

However if you are going to authorized resellers, I find them to be beyond useless. I do not see how any authorized resellers stay in business except as money laundering fronts.

You are correct, the authorized resellers are a joke. They tend to be beyond useless outside of harboring the occasional launch day device.

Two of the stores I visited were corporate locations, the other two were authorized resellers. The one that was able to get my squared away was a corporate location.

Is AT&T handing out QR codes for ESIM yet?

Yes.

Any idea if AT&T provides alerts of missed called when phone is off?

Only if they leave a voicemail. This behavior has not changed at all.

that makes sense
would an apple watch paired to a phone with an active esim and physical sim show calls and texts from both sims

No, since only one eSIM profile can active at a time.

Unless the device explicitly has multiple SIM support, it can only support one SIM profile. The eSIM can store multiple profiles. Imagine if to be a SIM card holder. When you choose a profile to use, one of those SIM is inserted into the device for active use.

Maybe if Apple or any device manufacturer decides to put multiple eSIM chips into their devices, we could have dual, triple, quad, who knows!

thanks
i thought since it was paired to the iphone by Bluetooth that it would display calls and texts from both sims
since it only supports 1 sim profile it would be useless for what i want to do anyway which is show calls and texts from my personal and secondary line when i move it to an iphone

The first link is what I was hoping for. The second link really didn't have anything to do with activating prepaid on the eSim. It's more on getting Volte working on prepaid. I'm going to try the eSim activation soon.

Please see what the user said first about esim on prepaid:
The other day I went to a Corp AT&T Store and tried to get a Esim activated but they refused stating that its not allowed and the stores that are doing it don't realize people get cut off within 30 days due to the system finding out.
