So I ordered the + last night from AT&T's site, and switched to the Next plan. At the end of the checkout, the total due was $0. Perfect.

This morning I check my email and see that there is a pending charge of $76.00 from AT&T EStore. WTF is this for? This is not the same CC as my service billing, and I have no email, invoice, or other document showing what this $76 charge is for.

Since it is still pending, not much I can do other than wait and see if it goes away. Otherwise - dying to know what AT&T is actually charging me for.

Anyone else see this or know what the charge is?

likely sales tax. On NEXT, you don't pay anything upfront except for sales tax.

Says 7-10 days with my 6+, for delivery on the 30th Sept-3rd Oct.

My 6 is coming on launch day.

Both 128GB.

I'm not mad. I'm laughing. It's funny how people complain that the Android phones are no good because of the size then Apple does the same and all of a sudden this size of product is cool.

Apple so is a cult and people feel they need the latest Apple iDevice to be a part of it. Even if they really don't like said type of device they'll buy it cause of the  on the back.

That's one huge cult. Besides, all fanboys do that, not just Apple users. And one major difference with the larger iPhones is that Apple came up with a truly elegant solution to the one handed usability issue compared to the clunky options in the Android camp.

I have a question... Does AT&T allow you to buy the iPhone outright (non-contract)? I have always gotten a 2-year contract with each new iPhone, but this year I want to just buy the iPhone 6 Plus in full with no 2 year contract/commitment. Is this possible with AT&T?

Maybe there is no solution except to build massive infrastructure that sits around completely unused except during this six hour window once per year. These sites get hit hard. Probably already, 12 hours after pre-order, the orders are a trickle compared to what they were. I bet every site is fully operational as well. In your plan they would be mothballing the extra data center for another year now because they had no more need for it.

H&R Block and Turbo Tax scale up rented server capacity on a temporarily basis for tax season. Retailers do something similar between Black Friday and New Years for the Christmas holiday season. Amazon built their entire AWS web hosting business model around this, and other infrastructure hosting companies including Microsoft's Azure are getting into in a big way.

Question for those ordering one of the new phones: if the 4.7" phone had the same screen resolution and camera tech as the 5.5" model which one would you order? Would it come down to battery life?

Honestly, the iPhone Plus is essentially the iPad Nano for me. The iPad-like interface elements are what swung me the rest of the way. I can see myself being more productive on it, especially once 3rd party apps start updating for it. The OIS would be great for shooting random videos of my baby girl (especially as she is just becoming mobile and I'll be following her around), but it wasn't a big selling point. The screen density didn't really do it for me as I don't really care—BUT there is something strangely appealing to me about having full 1080p. I watch a lot of video content on my phone for some reason. My wife has also been wanting an iPad of her own and refuses to upgrade from a 4" device, so I will probably give her my Mini or we might sometimes share as it will still be better for drawing (I'm hoping for an iPad Pro at some point). As for battery life, that's just icing on the already massive cake.

As for the size—yeah it's big. I won a MacRumors iPhone 6 case. It came with a cardboard printout of the screen inside it. I still couldn't quite reach the top of the screen, especially the corners. So since I'll have to use that new shortcut anyway, I might as well have a bigger screen, right? So I made a cardboard mockup of the Plus. It fits in my hand. Hope it won't be too slippery, but I'm also planning on getting an iWatch, so hopefully I won't have to get it out much when walking around outside. It fits in all the pants pockets I tried it in, including some of smaller-pocketed athletic shorts I wear around the house on the weekend. I did find myself noticing the card board mockup in my pocket more the first day, but today not as much. Now the actual phone should weigh more, but what I noticed more was when I would bend or shift into different positions the bottom corner of the phone pressure points were more apparent. I think for most guys (unless you wear really skinny jeans) the phone should be ok in your pocket. Just make sure it fits in your hand ok! I couldn't get it to fit in any of my wife's pockets—ok so it kind of did in a couple but it was sticking out at the top by quite a bit. Sitting down it cuts into the waist.

I preordered mine without incident five minutes after they went on sale from AT&T... and then AT&T sent me an email this morning saying there is a 35-42 BUSINESS DAY wait.

I ordered mine at 2:00 exactly and have a 3-4 week wait. Clearly Apple underestimated the demand and the carriers had an even smaller supply than Apple did.

Boom - that was it. My invoice did not show sales tax on it, so the Amount due today was $0.00.

Upon closer inspection I found this little tidbit hiding out on the side of the invoice:

Estimated Sales Tax** Note: We're currently unable to calculate estimated sales tax on your "Due Today" amount. The applicable sales tax will be charged to your card at time of shipping.

Thanks for opening my eyes for me :)

The fact that most iPhone 6 models still have a order arrival date of 9/19 and the 6+ models are only at 3-4 weeks delay really confirms that Apple stepped up the initial production quantities.

I know last night kind of sucked ft orders due to tech issues, but we really have to hand it to Apple for anticipating the huge demand and the have enough phone to meet the demand.

Good job Apple!
Uhh how did they step it up when my expected delivery date is the 31st of October? For AT&T. I pre-ordered at 12 Pacific time

Yes, if history is any indicator, they'll eventually sell you a full-price off-contract phone, once initial demand is met, but it will still come locked to their network. :(

Just buy the unlocked T-Mobile phone and use your existing AT&T SIM card, or get a new one [edit: a new SIM card] from any AT&T store.

Or get a Verizon iPhone, which are all GSM unlocked out of the box in addition to supporting the Verizon network.

Thanks for the info! I'm not really concerned with getting a locked phone through AT&T since they have the best service in my area anyway, but I just don't want to be tied down with another 2 year contract.

Everything is going well? My experience last night would beg to differ, unless Apple was lying about the carriers being unreachable in their reservation email.

Still, cool that they're selling so many, and I'm happy that I was eventually able to order my phone. :)

"Everything is going well", was not exactly my experience.

Website failed, Chat Representative failed, ordering from customer service phone rep was quite a challenge.

3 1/2 hours later finally got phones ordered.

I ordered two iPhone 6+ phones 20 minutes early at 2:40am EST. Got my confirmation at 2:44 from AT&T. Here I thought I was sneaking in the backdoor. My order status says preparing for shipping for 10/02-10/13.
Son of a......... :)

yeah, this happened to me too. I'm pissed. When I checked out, the shipping time still 14-21 days. Now, yes, I know that things weren't updating as fast as they should have on the site due to high volume, but come on now. October 31?? such a joke

Basically AT&T had to go live a half hour early if I pre ordered mine twenty mins early & got a date of 10/02-10/13.

Speaking about the 6 plus model

I preordered mine without incident five minutes after they went on sale from AT&T... and then AT&T sent me an email this morning saying there is a 35-42 BUSINESS DAY wait.

The iPhone 6 , 128gb, space gray I ordered est. ship date is 9/17-9/19

The iPhone 6 Plus , 64gb, Gold I ordered est. ship date is 10/13-10/22

Called AT&T this morning and was told all their iPhone 6 Plus are 35-42 days out.

The T-Mobile iPhone is identical to the AT&T iPhone in every way, except:
  • The different SIM cards in the box
  • T-Mobile will be unlocked out-of-the-box
  • You'd have to pay Chronic, etc. to get the AT&T phone unlocked or plead with someone in customer service (unlocked has a higher resale/trade-in value later)
  • T-Mobile will be available on the 19th.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Also, you can always pay the ETF to get out of your two year contract. It's prorated so the ETF gets smaller every month of service, but you'll always have to pay something -- my AT&T ETF for the four remaining months of my contract was something like $135. The problem there is that getting AT&T to agree to unlock your phone at that point is a total PITA.

My order was for the 6+ 64gb space gray and I completed my order at 12:10am

If I were to get a 2 year contract my current bill would go up $25 per month, which means over 2 years I'd be paying $600. It is cheaper for me to just buy the iPhone full price. So I wouldn't be able to just put my current iPhone 5's Nano-SIM into the 6 Plus when I get it? My current 2 year contract ends in November, so I wouldn't get the 6 Plus until then.

Just upgrading my phone on T-Mobile when I came across this gem. :)
