WGN tv here said the rule is "purchase date" in July/Aug/Sept. LOL
Oh - there's going to be such messes. What a shame for Apple having their great product messed with by a 2ndary company.

I see AT&T & Apple's relationship akin to Jon & Kate's right now.

I have seen a few posters here claim they went down to the store and GOT the lower price even though their bills were below $99

I am curious whether that actually happened and if so, how many were able to do that.

Well.. despite Apple's preorder site, AT&T's site and the *639# all telling me I was not eligible for the lowest upgrade pricing for the 3G, my local AT&T store manually overrode the upgrade date and renewed my contract at the $199 price.. woohoo!

Additional info: I signed a 2 year agreement on July 11th for the 16GB 3G iPhone.. my monthly service is $109.99 before tax and yet AT&T's system still showed I wasn't eligible for the lowest upgrade price on the 3G until December 2009. I recommend to those in the same boat, that you go to AT&T in person instead of calling them or going to Apple... the manager in the AT&T store has the ability (if you're nice enough to them) to override the eligibility date and upgrade you at the $199/$299 pricing.

Good luck everybody!

Shiner - I've yet to go to an AT&T store. Just not in a mad dash to do this. It's storming here and still having coffee. I'm going to give AT&T a call about this text "your issue has been resolved" and go from there.

I realize getting a new iPhone each year is going to cost extra money at any given point. I'm just trying to weed through the confusion of what is right vs. not right. Technically I've always hit OVER the $99 point on each line despite adding minutes last week BTW.

I just envision myself bypassing the frenzy and strolling into Apple in the afternoon and hopeing they didn't sell out. Which I expect they won't this time.

But I would like to know if ANYONE has seen their online date move up or down at all since this insanity started. I've yet to see any reports of it.

My upgrade eligibility is still down... I can't even do the text thing! I'm assuming its because I already ordered a phone and it is on its way... I should probably call them but might wait until things calm down a bit or my system thing starts working! :)

*new# still says I have to pay full retail pricing and that my upgrade date is 12/12. I think I am going to give up on this fight and hold on to my 3g until next year.

You can still try at the store. Worked for me (was getting full pricing with *new#)

Im holding on to my 2G until my contract is up. THOUGH my coworker has a PRE and I must say its extremely impressive!

AT&T is again telling me the rule is PURCHASE date of July/Aug/Sept. They are insisting I'm eligible despite OLAM saying December.
Any normal person would be at the store right now but I don't trust this.

I'm on hold for a manager. Seeing bezel alignment issues https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/725968/ Maybe I'll wait a week or so to try for another batch. IDK.

Non-manager gets back on the line says she has 2 statements. One says "purchase date" other says "upgrade eligible date". Was going to get the mgr to settle it and since my notes are at least good and I was staring down the possibility of mgr saying "no" and putting bad notes in - I said "forget it - drop it" and got off the line.

What are you going to do? I live in Oakbrook Illinois and I may try an ATT store, Are there any reports of shortages?

It's not just the bottom line, (which includes taxes, fees, etc.) Add up the talk, data and text fees. If they're $99, you should be golden. If not, call a sales rep and politely insist (only sales dept is supposed to have the magic powers, according to the idiot I talked to). If this doesn't get you the subsidy, ask to talk to someone else and try again.

And if that doesn't work, you can try increasing your plan to above $99, at least temporarily. Some have reported it that works.

Good luck & keep us updated with any developments. ;)

Thanks, I'll try that. I can't go into any stores since I'm overseas, so that would be my only option. I've had a contract with AT&T for around 5 years, so maybe that will help. One can hope.

I actually don't mind if I have to wait until 12/12 as long as I get the full discount at that time, not a partial one. I would just wait until next year's iPhone, but I would be afraid of my 3G being out of warranty and breaking. That's really the motive behind selling the 3G and getting the 3G S, for me.

I live in North Downers by 31st/Highland. Right by you. I've not left my chair yet. LOL I still don't know if I can get my husband a phone despite him being out of town. Not sure if I can get one and activate it when he gets home?

Please report ASAP when you hit the stores. Weather is ominous!

Problem with waiting till December is the next iPhone will be out only 6 months later. Then you'd have to pay even BIGGER at that time then the hit you might take now.

HERE ARE THE RULES

IF you purchesed your iphone 3G between July-September you AUTOMATICALLY get the upgrade price it cam an effect today so that why those *639# doesnt work just go into the AT&T store and they will tell you

I know the storms are intense, here comes round two! I'm going to go to the AT&T store on 22nd and midwest road, I'll let you know what I find out, I too have a 12/12/2009 upgrade date and have received the text stating said date. I'll let you know what I find!

So you are saying the $99 and above statement is false?

I went into a local AT&T store and they told me I had to have upgraded in June/July/Aug of last year (which I did) AND have a VOICE plan of $99.99 or more (which I did not).

They would not let me do the early upgrade. Can't wait to head to T-mobile in January...

T-mobile doesn't give yearly upgrades either...things will be no different with them as all cellular companies are businesses, not charities.

Sounds like pretty good info. Now I wonder if an Apple store will say the same thing. I'd rather get it from Apple in case of bad light leak, etc. They'd be more apt to swap me.

T-mo prices tend to be lower, and coverage can't be any worse than with AT&T.

AAhhhh!!!! My head is going to explode! This is the exact information that AT&T put out in the press release. What is so complicated about this people?

NO It's not! The press release clearly stated if your phone is "upgrade eligible" on those dates. NOT "purchased" on those dates.

Well, I am in a similar boat but they did say that in December that I would be eligible.
But it seems that by then, what's the point?
I may upgrade in September when my jefe will foot the bill.
