I can assure you that the GSM/UTMS technology if rolled out correctly is superior to CDMA.

The big difference which gives CDMA better 3g coverage for both Sprint and VZ is that EVDO (3G on CDMA networks) is effectively a software upgrade. For UTMS/HSDPA, it requires new towers and a complete new infrastructure to support those towers. That's the main problem. VZ had their infrastructure in place.

Also the main reason Apple didn't go with VZ was that they wanted the iPhone to be a global product. Name me one product that is US only that Apple sells?

Oh, there isn't one. A CDMA phone would be useless for this world market model that Apple uses. GSM/HSDPA is ideal. Unfortunately the best coverage for GSM/HSDPA in the US is AT&T, which along with T Mobile is substandard. If you want to see how good 3g can be, check out Japan. Most of their networks are UTMS/HSDPA

CDMA is dead in Oceania, Australia as far as I know has no CDMA carriers left and Telecom NZ is shutting down their CDMA network for W-CMDA. (Which is really GSM) As far as I know a lot of places in Asia and Europe are going GSM only as well.

AT&T is the better company. Verizon only has a better/larger data network. AT&T Uverse is amazing and blows Directv and Cable away. It will, once it's fully rolled out nationally, redefine interactive television. But AT&T does need to upgrade their network. It's ok if you live in a large city or urban area, but if you live in a rural area or out in the burbs then it can be a problem getting 3G coverage.

As far as Apple going to Verizon, after this latest commercial in which they make fun of Apples app store I wouldn't think there is much chance of that happening. It looks like Verizon has decided to take the gloves off against Apple.

Why would I want to pay for a dual radio device when I ONLY need GSM/HSDPA. Why should I pay extra just because the US decides to be different to the rest of the world?

Did you realize that HSDPA uses the W-CDMA radio protocol, so an Iphone is already dual-radio?

And, I thought that Apple users love to pay more to Apple, regardless of the value received.

Let's get the real picture.

I would compare actual network upload and download speeds at the same location at the same time for each carrier and map that. Even where AT&T has 3G I seldom actually get 3G speeds between 8am and 8pm in any market.

Even when I have full signal and a 3G connection, my download speeds are very slow if it is during peak voice times. Obviously, voice gets priority over data and there is only so much bandwidth at any given tower.

The issue is simply one of capacity overlaid with demand and other carriers seem to have a better handle on these dynamics.

All carriers have issues, AT&T simple has more of them.

AT&T doesn't even have a map for their 3G coverage ... they literally just have a list of cities: http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/popUp_3g.jsp

If you go to their map they make no distinction between 3G and Edge: http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/?wtSlotClick=1-001FIO-0-1&WT.svl=calltoaction#?type=data

I think it's AT&T that's doing the distorting here, not Verizon.

That's not true, if you click on "voice" and zoom in one level, you can see the 3G coverage area.

Although it's not Oceania - I was a bit surprised on a recent trip to Hong Kong when the 3G EVDO card in my Dell laptop reported 4 bars and wanted to do a roaming connect.

NFW, thank you. I clicked the "disable EVDO modem" button as quickly as I could....

I think ATT's network problems have alot more to due with the bandwidth of their network rather than the signal strength and coverage. While living at my home in Sunnyside Washington I rarely if ever lost anything but full bars 3g and never once dropped a call. Now that I moved away to college in a small town with thousands of Iphone and other users of the Att network the internet speed is terrible and moves back and fourth between strong coverage to no coverage even while sitting still. It is just a terrible change.

Are you insane?! MORE government regulation?! Please LESS! Government is the problem, NOT the solution. Socialism is a failure, unless you're poor and dumb thinking government is Santa Claus.

Bring back the liberty.

Yeah, I hate how the government regulates the food industry so I end up with actual beef instead of dead rat meat in things like sausage.
I hate how they regulate the useage of pesticides like DDT so I don't get sick from eating vegetables.
I hate how they built a continent spanning network of high speed road ways so I could easily travel around the country.
I hate how they broke up the AT&T phone monopoly so we can even be HAVING this discussion on which wireless provider to use.
I hate how they regulate drug trials so Tylenol doesn't kill me.
I hate how I get free delivery of all my mail, whereever I live. Unless I want to send something I don't pay a dime.
I hate things like lemon laws whcih prevent car dealers from selling me a "new" car that will fail by the time I drive it home.
I hate how we have cleaner air because corporations can't just dump whatever crap into they want, cleaner water for the same reason.
I hate how I don't die at traffic intersections because there are street lights, heck it would be so much better if the government didn't regulate who could drive so all those people who get sloshed at bars would have the freedom to run over the rest of us while driving drunk.

Actually i don't hate any of those things. You know what I do hate? People who think the only options are "Yay leisz fairre capitalsm" and "Boo evil totalitarian socialism". Especially since BOTH extremes are bad. Government regulation isn't inherently bad OR good, its all in how its used and whether or not its abused. De-regulation is the same, heck if you need proof of that, look at the financial crisis, bank deregulation led to that.

So tommorow morning when you eat your pesticide and poisin free cereal, and drink your arsenic free coffee I hope you will take the time to reflect that golly gosh gee, not everything the government does is bad and that sometimes its actually quite good.

If you really think letting buisnesses have their way is the better option, I suggest you do some research on what life was like during the industrial revolution and turn of the century America. Sweatshop labor, child labor, no minimum wage, no breaks, 6 day work week, 10+ hours a day, no insurance, no health care, no middle class. The rich did really well, the rest? Not so much.

That is T-Mobile. I read the technical explanation years ago and I can't find it again, but basically AT&T in order to save network resources turned off a feature that T-Mobile has on that enables phone calls to take priority when in EDGE.

If you are using the iPhone on AT&T's EDGE and the data connection is active, the phone calls will not go through and instead route straight to voicemail. I've personally tested this out.

If you have AT&T EDGE and you are pulling up a webpage when someone calls, or your email is syncing at the moment somebody calls, or you are streaming video/audio when someone calls you won't even know they called you unless they leave a voicemail. The phone will not ring.

Oh wow. That's pretty terrible.

Poor Engineers, Rich Lawyers

This is classic old Ma Bell legacy corporate action. If you can't out perform in the market, sue the competition in a legal gray zone.

The maps are very clear saying "AT&T 3G coverage" and not a general "AT&T coverage." While the Verizon ads are tacky, they are true to what they are saying. This one is only going to get some AT&T attorneys some nice court fees and that is it.

As usual, some exec thinks keeping a few lawyers on retainer is better than improving product.

Ad is clearly about 3G.

AT&T's desire to construe 2.5G as the same is just deceptive.

Cudo's to Verizon in this case....

Hope they dont start looking closer are AT&T's claimed 3G areas....

WAH! WAH! WAH!

How about....... improving your service instead?

I am with you! My 3g service has gotten worse since last year when I got my 3g. I am not satisfied with AT&T, and I used to work for them. I hate that often the service is so bad I can't even send out a text, which I use as a last resort because I can't get a phone call out. My iPhone is being limited by the poor coverage.

No, it's fear of roaming charges.

Sometimes "no connectivity" is much cheaper than "transparent" connectivity.

iPhone User Incurs $3,000 Roaming Charges from AT&T

Clearly, "dave" was an idiot. Within about 10 minutes of release of the original iPhone, there were postings all over the place about avoid data roaming outside of the US. Even the ATT website said, "Don't do it!" I went to Spain the day after my original iPhone purchase (first day), and know to turn all data services OFF: email, browser, etc. I made a couple of phone calls at the expected $2.00/minute rate.

AT&T is probably the worst cell phone provider around here. Verizon has the monopoly here in NH. I barely get 1/2 a bar of EDGE service in NH. AT&T really needs to improve there EDGE network before they start complaining about 3G.
