I guess AT&T found about about T-Mobile plans ahead of time. It's a pre-emptive strike.

T-Mobile to start paying AT&T, Verizon & Sprint early termination fee on Jan 15 2014

http://www.tmonews.com/2013/12/what...ther-carriers-early-termination-fees-covered/

UPDATE:

I received another email from one of our tipsters, who sent me an image of an internal document. I promised them I wouldn't publish it here, but, let's just say it goes along with what I've heard already.

This carrier ETF rebate promotion will be launched on January 15th, according to our source. In order to qualify, you must trade in your old device and purchase a new T-Mobile one. The rebate to cover your other carrier's ETF will be achieved by a combination of the trade-in value of your old phone and the promo rebate to cover the difference. If you have a smartphone, the maximum rebate value is $350, for a feature phone it's $200.

For example. Let's say you're the Dad in the above situation, you have $230 to pay your old carrier. Your old phone is worth $100 on trade-in, so T-Mobile stumps up $130 to cover the rest of the cost. How much you get from T-Mobile is entirely dependent on how much you need to pay to end your old contract and how much your old device is worth.

Time to eliminate another customer pain point? Time for #Uncarrier4? Yes it's time! Stay tuned...Happy New Year #Randall

CES 2014

“This one you aren’t going to believe,” T-Mobile says in an invitation to journalists. T-Mobile is planning a media event for Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Las Vegas event.

This is a preempt move. It was rumored that T-Mobile would announce at some up coming conference this very same thing. AT&T must have gained information about what T-Mobile is planning, and struck first. T-Mobile's deal probably still wins because there probably will be no contract involved other than staying with the carry enough months to cover the promotion.

ATT why dont you have try loosening the reigns on your data pricing! DAMN. I have 8 lines with you and have had an account for 9 years, give me a reason to stay! Make me feel wanted.

Remember: AT&T only wants your best.
That is your money.

Here's a real world example buddy:
My sister and family have a 5 line family plan with AT&T. 4 lines are iPhones (two of which have 2gb of data and the other two have the mandatory 300mb). They have unlimited texting and I believe 700 minutes which translates to unlimited since they have a ton of rollover. Their bill is roughly $210 a month all-in with tax.
Now your turn. Show me the math where switching to a shared data plan "saves them a ton."

Uh, Shared data plans are for people who use data and their phone (voice). If you do not use data and hardly use voice, then what is the point? Grab a couple of Motorola Razrs or pay as you go phones if you want cheaper....

They have the best data network BY FAR. It's a good business decision to pay folks to try it out rather then listen to misleading commercials from other carriers.

Smart move by AT&T...

If the AT&T/T-Mobile merger was halted/denied by the FCC, why would this one be allowed?

Because if Sprint and Tmobile merge, they are still the 3rd largest carrier, and still behind ATT and Verizon. This would not have been the case if ATT and Tmo merged, also being the only GSM carrier in the US.

I'd go with T-Mobile if I switch. The minimal data plan (200 mb I think) is free. The phone costs are decoupled from the plan so you can upgrade when you want and not pay a premium if you choose not to update frequently. This is the way plans should work. I have high regard for companies that make changes that should be made even if they initially lose money at it. The only downside is more limited coverage.

It is mainly because they were smart when deciding what technology to go after. They had a head start. Verizon chose the wrong technology. However AT&T isn't very innovative. They change only when someone else does it first. That said, they have a great network and their support is much improved. T-Mobile is probably more innovative, but they need to be or nobody would have any reason to use them.

Sorry to disappoint you, the T Mobile 200MB is for iPad only. I wish it's for the iPhone.

I got the iPad AIr from T Mobile and it does come with 200MB free each month for life, not a bad deal since most place I go have wifi.

x1000.

T-Mobile can be cutting all their margins as thin as they want, but it only hurts themselves. Having Legere as their puppet doesn't cost them much, but network upgrades do. They can't afford to improve their network if they keep lowering prices and letting everyone onto their network.

I think a person who worked at Global Crossing, effectively making a bankrupt company into a successful company, worked at Dell and AT&T Asia who also received Bachelor's and Master's at top business schools knows how to make money and run a national cellular operator better than you.

What does a multi-billion dollar company do?

T-Mobile must be a threat to AT&T if they are offering this only for T-Mobile customers.

Instead of innovating and moving the wireless industry forward AT&T has constantly been ripping off T-Mobile and following their every step. Now they are just desperate to try and buy out their customers.

AT&T - put all that money you guys rip off from your customers to use and innovate something! you guys use to be the front runner now you guys are in the business of overpriced out-dated plans. Sharing (HA more like giving a good reason to further rip off customers)...

T-Mo is the reason the wireless industry is moving anywhere now days!

Shucks! Just switched to ATT two weeks ago from T-Mobile!

Had no issues with TMobile, voice was great, WiFi calling was great but their Data coverage sucked. I thought I could live with it as I already knew this from their coverage map. But I couldn't!

TMobile, other than these tricks... increase your coverage!

I'm in a similar situation. Switched from Verizon to t mobile to save money, but the coverage sucked. I miss calls constantly. Since I have 2 iPhones and 2 iPads, Verizon's family plan will only cost me about $40/month more, by getting the amount of data that I actually use, but at least I will be able to use my devices everywhere.

Wait, what? Pretty sure there are still entire states that AT&T doesn't cover.

Not only is AT&T data faster in the entire SLC, UT Valley, but they honestly have more bars in more places than VZ in the SLC, UT Valley. I'm pissed I switched to VZ.

Both are rip-offs, but if I am going to be ripped off, I prefer to superior call/data coverage AT&T offers over VZ in my surrounding areas.

Where exactly is that?

AT&T's LTE network dwarf's TMo's HSPA network in size.

T-Mobile barely has a network in VT, ME, WV, Nebraska, Utah, Montana, ND, SD, Wyoming, etc.

However all this will be nothing once DT says "See Ya!" to T-Mobile US. Once that happens nothing will stop the fall of T-Mobile.

I thought T-Mo was doomed back in 2011 when the merger failed? And then doomed again in 2012 since they were they only carrier without the iPhone?

+1000000

Att is just a dumb pipe being ran by dumb down management, just not going to cut it in 2014

Go take a peak at the European carriers. This is exactly the reason why most of them were loosing money fast and needed to consolidate.

EE is the perfect example. DT (TMo) and Orange partnered up because they couldn't afford the upgrade costs and infrastructure upgrades themselves. Exactly the same issue T-Mobile will be running into if they keep running the price down.

Verizon bought out Vodafone's share in VZW, specifically because of the turmoil in Europe and the volatility in that marketplace.

It's doesn't take a business degree to figure this out. It's common sense.

They chose the right technology... The AT&T LTE network is WAY faster then Verizon and their fallback network is also faster. Verizon uses antiquated technology. I understand that some people would prefer an Unlimited Plan so they can stream their video all day long. I prefer the lightning fast network where I can work efficiently (iPad and tethered Macbook Pro). I also would like to be able to use my data (tethered or not) and also use my phone. Verizon's antiquated network lacks that.

The AT&T network is just head and shoulder above all the other carriers. Sure, they had issues a few years ago while being the sole provider of an exploding iphone market, but all in all, they handled it extremely well and have come out on top.

Very weak, didn't even attempt to counter. The total data I laid out is 5gb total on the existing plan and yes it is being used. But hey let me make it easier for you, let's say two of the other lines upgrade to 2gb each and the total bill is now $250 which includes 8gb. Now tell me how much your 5 line unlimited talk/text and 8gb of shared data is? Answer: you ain't saving nothing.
