AT&T - iPhone 3G on Backorder for 5-7 Days.

16g white ordered Friday arrived today at ATT Capitola, CA. Clerk told me I was the first of the DF customers to come in, but she thought the few phones that arrived today were white. Clerk and manager both expressed surprise that I knew the phone was in, unaware of all the details of how ATT's email notification is handling the shipments. Apparently, the store's plan was to notify customers and have them call for an appointment to pick up the phone. The clerk also said the store's computer (both credit card charges and phone activation) was very slow today due to large numbers of customers coming in.
none of it matters
this is just for your curiosity of my experience incase anyone finds any interest. this is not a gloat.
i ordered my df in oconomowoc (between milwaukee and madison) wisconsin friday 12:30pm cst. 16 gig black. when she was entering my order, she had to call someone over because "there are none left in the warehouse, it's showing back ordered now." i tried to get more info out of her but she wasn't divulging. i heard someone mention "well tell him to get the white and he'll get it faster." (i stayed with the black)
so i've been playing the game of checking order status, reading everyone's stories, watching it go from back order to no back order to back order etc. thought for sure it'd be another week.
then all of a sudden it's showing as shipped. picked up 4 hours earlier and due by 3pm tomorrow.
so...att's order status is bs. only use it for to get your fedex tracking number once it's shipped and not for your actual status, imho.

ATT's internal communication on this has been strange. I wasn't planning to order an iPhone last weekend because I thought it was going to be a first-come first-serve thing. Then I caught a blurb in the local paper about the DF process so I stopped at the store down the street from my office on Friday night. They said they weren't doing that and to their knowledge nobody was doing that. Later that night a friend mentioned he had ordered one through direct fulfillment. The next morning I went to the store my friend used and they were laughing about the "moron stores" that elected to not do direct fulfillment. My salesmen even suggested that some store maybe weren't aware they could do direct fulfillment on the iPhone. Crazy.
waited weeks for the original
When I got my original iPhone AT&T sent me one of those. Unfortunately it took them far longer than they estimated to get the phone in.
I hope the situation is better with 3G. This time I'm waiting a bit to let the crowds blow over.
Plus, I can't decide between black or white! Apple, you are making things difficult!

Just checked no status change. I am also interested in the screen scraping code.
The local store is not even picking up the phone anymore, voicemail only.
Corporate ATT is not very helpful either, depening on what yahoo your getting the flavour of the day changes.
I am just hanging and waiting.

Update: my 16gb white just shipped! I'm glad that this time tomorrow i'll have my new baby. The case i ordered from apple just came today too - perfect timing.
Two questions...
1. About Shipping -- does anyone know if phones are being shipped out of warehouses at specific times? I've been trying to look at customers ahead of me who had phones shipped already but can't see a pattern.
2. E-mail Notification -- the salesman neglected to ask for my e-mail address and with the chaos of the day, I forgot to provide it. Is there a way to add it to my order w/o calling the store? I'm not currently an AT&T customer.

There isn't really a point. All my e-mail confirmation has is a table showing the phone is ordered but backordered and a link to www.cingular.com/order_status/order_status .
I ordered my 16G white Saturday afternoon. My phone back order status has been toggled between 0 and 1 all this time.
They have to be shipped to the store so they can be activated. Don't believe home was an option. Same reason they can't be purchased online from att.com or apple.com.
16 GB White received Tuesday and 16 GB Black arriving Wednesday
Ordered white 16 GB and black 16GB last Friday.
White shipped Monday and received today, Tuesday.
Black 16 GB shipped today, Tuesday, and will arrive at the store tomorrow, Wednesday. Both were shipped out of Ft. Worth, TX.

My black 16 GB is currently "QTY BACKORDERED - 0", although I fully expect it to shift back to 1... there's about 16 people ahead of me at my store.
When the "Tracking Number" column gets filled in with an actual clickable link to FedEx is when you can say that it did ship or that it is ready to ship.

I ordered my 8GB iPhone on Saturday around 2pm-3pm. Still waiting for it to ship, but hoping to pick it up by the end of this week. This will replace my Blackberry and my 30GB Video ipod. ;0)
Why 8GB? $200 was enough for me to spend and in the last 4-5 years I have accumulated less than 5GB of content via iTunes (including content loaded from CD and such). Over half of that is podcasts which don't need to all be available on the go. I figure I can get away with 8GB for quite a long time, at least until the 3rd generation iPhone is out.
I skipped Gen-1 since it wasn't really on the cutting edge (network-wise). I'm glad I waited for the 3G. :0)
I'm looking forward to giving my Blackberry to my wife or one of my friends when this shows up.

I used webclip to make a widget of the page and have it on my dashboard... kinda fun/convenient and easy way to check the status of my order
I ordered a 16 gb black... I keep second guessing myself and thinking that white might be better... thoughts?
EDIT: I just checked the people before me... #111 shipped yesterday.. #112 is still backordered.. but #150 ... me at 191 and #210 are not backordered.
I have no idea what is going on with their system.. but something is fishy over there at ATT
hurray, the "1" for backordered for my 16gb white iphone, switched to 0... it'll probably switch back to 1 a few times, but at least its moving... from reading this thread and another, seems like when it starts moving back and fourth it's getting ready to ship... unless im mistaken... or at least im hoping.
