AT&T - iPhone 3G on Backorder for 5-7 Days.

iphone madness!
i orderd mine yesterday afternoon sadly.
i didn't really get to play with the display one, even though my local at&t store was basically a ghost town.
the salesperson hooverd over me and watched my every tap haha.
They told me it would take about 10-21 days for my iphone to arrive.

my phone isn't backorderd anymore but my freight is.
i really don't understand how freight is backordered..?

Huge disappointment. Checked my order this morning. Both the phone and freight were off the backorder list. I then called the order status number (877-782-8870) and the automated voice confirmed my order was in the warehouse and ready to ship. Just got back from lunch and checked to see if the order shipped yet. It hadnt and Ive been returned to the backorder list although freight is remains off the backorder list. Absurd. Just bloody absurd. Next step is to call a CSR and hope they can explain whats going on.
YMMV on this, but Here's a heads up and a tip for everyone.
Last night I stopped by another local ATT store (Roseville, CA), and asked about the phone. The rep there told me that all of the black iPhones (both 8G and 16G) were on back order from their warehouse for 14-21 days. No AT&T store in the city (Sacramento metro area) has any iPhone period in stock at their stores. So it's taking at least 2 weeks to get them in to the warehouse before even getting to the stores.
HOWEVER...
If you are wanting an iPhone, the rep did say it takes considerably LESS time to get the white iPhone in than any of the black ones; 4 days compared to 14-21. So if you're wanting an iPhone, at least in Northern California, White would be the way to go.

Put in the 5 digit Order ID from your receipt and the zip-code of the store you ordered. NOT your zipcode.
FRT is Freight. Why it's backordered is just a weird ATT system thing.
Your phone will flip back and forth between backorded and not (1 or 0) as the warehouse gets inventory and than allocates inventory to orders.
In the URL you'll see your Order ID. Change that number to lower/higher to see other peoples orders from the same store.

go to that site... look at your AT&T receipt, fill in the blanks on the web page... (enter the Store's ZIP CODE, not yours)
and you should be just as disappointed as the rest of us !!!
just got the call from the store, my iphone 3g is there, told me to come pick it up anytime today.

so i ordered a 16gb black iphone friday at like 6pm. i checked the status of the first direct fulfillment at our store location (Monroeville, PA) and his frt is still backordered but not his phone. THE FIRST DF!?! what chance do i have being the 40thish...
Fortunately, my phone hasn't shipped... but yeah, it's damn disconcerting to think that even if it ships, I might not get it anytime soon...
Update: Whew! The batch that was sent out yesterday to the same store got delivered today... sucks to be the first batch that got their phones returned.
Does anyone know if the AT&T stores will let us change an order from black to white? I wanted the black, but mine is going to be in a case most of the time anyway. 3G, I love you for your frontside.
I ordered mine on Monday afternoon in NYC, and was told 3-5 business days, but I'm guessing that I'll have some more bonding time with my old Verizon phone than I had hoped.

Just wanted to pass along the info that in St. Louis I ordered a 16g Black on saturday about 4 p.m. and had Economy Freight on the receipt. The phone had been back ordered 1 status until this morning when it turned to 0 but the freight was still in back order. As of now I have a fed ex tracking number and it says its being deliverd to the store tomorrow. Still crossing my fingers

Order can't be changed it has to be canceled and submitted as a new order.
So you'd go to the end of the line.
I'd ordered an 8gig on Friday but decided I wanted the 16-blk so I switched Monday. When I see the order next to my original that I know is an 8 ship I'll probably yell a little but waiting a bit longer for what I really wanted will be worth it. -I think... I chant to myself over and over.

Well that's good to know. Maybe I will get mine tomorrow (Ordered on Saturday as well).
It seems they do shipments all day long ... FedEx guy must be getting tired. Some other shipments I looked up went out as early as 6AM and as late as 6PM ... all made it next day.

Good to see that some ordered on Saturday are starting to make it out...(Hopefully)...I ordered on Saturday morning.
So since i'm obsessed about trying to figure out whats up with my shipment, i came up with more updates. Not sure if anyone else is doing the same, but as of this morning, there were 17 people in front of me that had no backorder on either freight or the phone.....as of now, there are only 6 of us that have no backorder on the freight or phone. I wonder if this means they will be shipped out today or tomorrow? Any ideas?
