I was buying my iPhone yesterday and this prima donna dad next to me was picking up his 4 iPhones for his family. I talked to him a bit: his 2 kids, 10 and 11, are getting iPhones...really, what's the point?

Why spoil kids, honestly? Having the best phone when you're 11 really leaves nothing to look forward to and nothing to earn.

You get to look forward to the next best phone.

Wow. I know my kid won't have a phone like this.

Well, there are a couple people behind me that ordered on the 25th that shipped today (29th). I have to assume they are white, but someone ordered on the 27th and had one shipped on the 28th behind them.

Wish they would have listed what type of phone in this queue to give you a better idea of where you are at.

Heh, nobody needs an iPhone. People just want one. I'd say most people would get by just fine on any phone that texts and makes calls. Hell, SMS wasn't even popular until 2000, only 8 years ago. Everyone got by on just regular phone calls before that, even craaazy business people. So sure, an iPhone is nice to have for a business person to check their email and stuff, but at the end of the day, they need one just as much as that 11 year old. And I know some 11 year olds who text and email on their phones a whole lot more than my dad, who has a BB, and works with a pretty nice title for Nike.

Would that be a shoe tester? :D

Just playin with ya!

Of course, no one needs one, but an 11 year old having something like this is nuts, imo.

*shrug* I never had a cellphone until I was 17, and I bought it with my own money and paid for the plan with my own money. I'm 19 now and am going to my next iPhone, which is also earned on my own, but I hate seeing people who complain about younger people having one. It's like, I'm sorry you didn't have that when you were young, neither did I, but it's not your right to complain about what other people have - it just makes you sound like a whiner. I'm only really big on this because of a thread earlier though haha.

Not whining at all. I am glad my parents didn't hand over the world to me when I was a kid...I think I respect the things I have more now because of it. From my experience, kids who are always given what they want always expect what they want, and that is where the issue is.

I will agree that there are 11 year olds out there that are going to get more use out of this phone than probably 50% of the adults who have it. But it is just a parenting aspect, not a complaining because they have it. You will understand more when you have kids of your own.

it only took two weeks to get my phone (Sarcasm) but now that I have it, I am happy and posting from it right now.

I apologize in advance for my newbie type questions but I have a couple more...how long they can keep one in "back-order" status, I'm like many of you here that they told me 7-10 bussiness days, I'm new to this Iphone stuff making the jump from tmobile and blackberry, so this way of apple and att handling their bussiness is new to me and to some degree I considered non customer oriented.

Being fairly homosexual, I doubt whether or not I'll ever have kids, but that's not the point :p I do see where your parenting aspects are coming from, I just think that another parenting aspect would be that it would be good for the kid. Parents want their kids to have cell phones now, so they can keep in touch with them easily. Hell, my mom learned how to text when I went to university cause I couldn't pick up my phone that often. Getting your kid an iPhone instead of a Razr or something makes it good for you (You can keep in touch with them more easily when they're out and about with friends) and it's also a gift for them, a sort of treat. It's like a gift for 2 people in 1.

She is 3 1/2 so I have some time to ponder on what sort of phone she may have...who knows, by the time she is 11, the Iphone might be the basic cell phone!!!

Adoption is always an option, but that's not the point.

I think the point is you yourself stated that you bought all your phones with your hard (hopefully) earned money. Being handed an iphone, I doubt the kids will know the true value of the money used to purchase it.

I don't think it outrageous to buy a phone for an 11 year old to use, but it will a basic phone that is still owned by me (just like the use of my house, car, etc....).

wtf?

my store... a fairly busy NYC ATT store, has had 2 ship on the 18th and the 2 more ship on the 25th?

Great, if this pattern holds true, I'll get my phone mid-August. Makes me think I should have waited for the Android.

13 days and counting...

I ordered a black 16g on 7/17 from an ATT store in NYC. The queue up to my order indicates that there are about 9 of us still waiting, and many of the orders post 7/17 have been filled.

It's beginning to feel like a dream....

I also ordered on 7/17. Last week, from Wed. to Sat., I moved from 72 to 4 in the queue. Three days later and I'm still No. 4.

F that..you're friggin 11..sit down, shut up, and all you need is a basic phone

Well, it does prevent them from having to buy the kid an iPod Touch too. Although, doesn't an iPhone come pretty much full price for the service whether it's on a family share plan or not? So they'll actually be spending much more over two years. Doesn't matter, some people have to have it, only the newest and the best for their family

I got my 8GB yesterday, so I probably won't visit much anymore.
Same problem as everyone else, activation sites were down. I as hanging out there with my buddy waiting for them to be back up. Also had a problem with the credit check and my LifeLock. They called my cell to verify, but it went straight to voicemail.
I had full EVDO signal and it went straight to voicemail. No wonder I'm getting rid of Verizon

when it says shipped does that mean its waiting for me at the AT&T store or it just left china right now, and should be at AT&T in a couple days?

The phone is on the fedex truck for delivery right now. Unfortunately, I have a flight lesson this afternoon and I'm not sure if I'll be done before the store closes. Bah.

It was picked up at the distibution facility by FedEx and is on its way to your AT&T store. It should be there tomorrow by 3pm.

I just had this answer when I called my ATT store:

"We told you 7-10 business days. Business days. Do you understand what that means? Business days?? It doesn't include weekends. OK... since you ordered on the 17th, it's only been 8 BUSINESS days... get it?"

Knowing her stress level was peaking, I asked, "so that means it will guaranteed by there by Thursday?"

To which she said: "I can't guarantee anything! I'm not God!"

LOL
