so then i have to pay 18 bucks for the upgrade fee then the 199

or 18 plus an additional 299 bc im not eligible for an upgrade till 09? I've been with Cingular/ATT since 03, they better show a little respect or I will have no problem just paying the 175 and going elsewhere.

As I suspected. This means I'll be veening off my addiction to text messaging slowly.

AT&T does offer incoming text restrictions so if you don't want to ever receive texts you can do that as well.

Ha. Having paid $400 "full price" ($600 but I was in the return window, so I got a $200 bill credit) for my EDGE iPhone w/ a two-year contract never looked so good. I understand why 3G service would cost a bit more, but at those rates, to get our current family plan would cost, w/ tax and fees, about $50 more a month. In just four months you pay the same as full price, and over the life of contract, you pay, compared to the old iPhones sales model, $1,400 for that subsidized $199 iPhone.

This should make it clear to everyone why Jobs wanted the things sold at "full price" to customers, even though you still had to sign a contract with ATT. He was SAVING YOU $500 a year.

Sorry but even a guarantee of a full double the data speed is not worth $1,400 for a mobile phone.

T-mobile (netherlands prices)

Hi guys,

Kinda new to this forum.

But i just got an email with the T-mobile subscriptions

* € 29,95 per maand (150 belminuten, 150 sms’jes,
Visual Voicemail en onbeperkt supersnel internet binnen Nederland)
* € 44,95 per maand (300 belminuten, 300 sms’jes,
Visual Voicemail en onbeperkt supersnel internet binnen Nederland)
* € 64,95 per maand (500 belminuten, 500 sms’jes,
Visual Voicemail en onbeperkt supersnel internet binnen Nederland)

So basically in summary.

30 euro per month for 150 mins, 150 sms's and unlimited Internet (2mbit up/ 384kb down)

45 euro per month for 300 mins, 300 sms's and unlimited Internet (2mbit up/ 384kb down)

65 euro per month for 500 mins, 500 sms's and unlimited Internet (2mbit up/ 384kb down)

He made the phone more affordable. Anything after that it's all AT&T. Apple doesn't get any money from the monthly plans anymore.

Stop blaming Jobs and Apple for the higher cost of the phone over the long haul.

Another thing (not directed at you), what is with people bitching about ZOMG111jasflkas the iPhone is gonna cost me X amount of dollars over the life of the contract? Honestly, like you didn't know that's how much you're paying out to AT&T?

He did not make the phones cost less. Cheaper, yes. (no dock and plastic back) ATT paid Apple $200, and we are going to pay $200, so Apple is not losing ONE CENT on this deal.

I am tired of hearing this....he made them cheaper...NO HE DIDN'T!

Photography is only a hobby (an expensive hobby:(), but I derive a great deal of pleasure from it. So would a hobby be considered a necessity according to that study?

Right, but if you enjoy photography then after the initial new-purchase high quickly wears off you'll enjoy photography just as much with your fancy lens as you would without it. Your photographs may not turn out as good technically, but you would enjoy it just as much with or without the fancy lens.

p.s. This isn't economics, it's sociology. I'm not a sociologist but I am interested in the human condition. So when I hear of important study results about people's happiness and our future's sustainability, I take notice.

Yay, so we have...

$299 - 16gb iPhone 3g
$69 x 24 - 450 + 5000nw monthly plan
$5 x 24 - 200 texts
$10 x 24 - taxes
$18 - activation fee
+ $99 x 2 - mobileMe
----------------------------
$2531 cost of ownership over 2 years for myself

Holy crap, I had no idea it was that much. I really didn't. This makes me the saddest boy in all the land. Although this is just an increase of $576. Throw another hundred bucks or so per year at the app store and holy crap thats a lot of money.

Knock off $49 for mobileMe, because the mobileMe family plan is only $149, but still, yeah, the original $600 or $400 EDGE iPhone was BY FAR the better deal. It's obvious now why they couldn't leave the original EDGE phone and plans as an option; no one would buy them. Also obvious why the original phones became unavailable a month ago. Had they still been for sale, if this information leaked, or even upon announcement, most people awaiting a 3G iPhone would have run out and bought EDGE iPhones. Few people really need 3G or real GPS as opposed to tower-triangulation positioning.

AT&T did not offer a corporate discount on the 1st gen iPhone. Are they allowing it for the 2nd gen?

Well they now have no excuse, they are treating 2d Gen in all their pricing like any other phone they are selling, no discounts on service of any kind, no special pricing on the plans, so I don't see how they WILL NOT allow government/corporate discount, like they do for ANY OTHER PHONE with the same SERVICE PLANS.

You activate the old iPhones in iTunes, you just need to get a sim from AT&T.

I activated an iPhone on my account a week or so ago and am upgrade eligible. However, I started my current AT&T contract with an iPhone to begin with, so maybe that's why it worked for me...

hahaha seems like i cant beat the system. anyone else know a trick to get the iphone 3g 199 if you are not eligible?

So is there any *official* word about the FAN discounts? Unless they've changed it, it only applies to the voice part of the plan anyway. The ONLY way they are going to get me to upgrade to the 3G is if they bring back the FAN discount as I'm not going to pay $10 + tax more a month (like $15) on top of the $299 for the phone. Looks more and more like I'll just wait for Christmas and the 32GB version...

The person you quoted was pricing MobileMe for themselves for two years.

Demand

After hundreds of posts so far on this subject of people asking pricing questions (most of which are asking about buying the new iPhone) I can't see why you don't see the high demand?

Exactly. Many stores last year ran out of their initial inventory. Remember they had a website where you could check on what they had in stock each day?

Amen. He made them "cheaper" in the sense you get far poorer materials, no docking peripheral and a one-time cost of $200 compared to $400. But as I mentioned above that $200 phone is $1,400 when compared with EDGE phones with our ATT EDGE iPhone plan. So they're "cheaper" but far, far more expensive for much less value. (Plastic back? Was that REALLY needed for 3G and GPS radio signals to get through? Even if so, my original metal-backed iPhone is like a piece of rock. I'll keep that, at EDGE speeds, with tower-triangulated positioning, paying for battery replacements as need, for years and years, thanks.)

text messaging is a rip off. Once people begin to use AIM or whatever on their iPhones ATT will be crying.

Do you have a source for this? Everything I've seen so far says the new iPhone plan can be used with a FAN Discount.

Seen from AT&T or from people on here? Unless it's something official from AT&T I'm far more likely to believe it's not going to happen. Especially considering almost all FAN discounts apply to the voice only part and the new plans aren't categorized as "voice only" anymore...

I really just want to unlock an iphone and put my current at&t sim that is off contract in the iphone since I have the $29.99 plan which is no longer offered, add the $5 text messaging, and then just use wi-fi with no AT&T data. I guess I would have to sign a 2 year contract and then pay the early termination fee because there is no way I'm paying $30 a month for data on a 2-year contract. I would have to raise my voice plan price which I don't need and be required to pay for at&t data when wi-fi would be fine for me. Even though my company pays my cell bill I don't want to get stuck with it if they decide to cut costs sometime in the future. I should have just bought the original iPhone after the price drop and not waited for this.

I hope the iPod Touch Rev.2 has the GPS inside it. Because a lot of people will be buying them and sticking with their cheaper phone plans. That's what I am doing.

Someone said it would be realistically around $2500 to own an iPhone over two years right now. The US average wage is apparently around $50k. So, each year, an average person will be willing to spend 2.5% of their gross pay on a mobile telephone, text messaging system, PDA, wireless internet, gaming, work-integration device. But with current price rises, what percentage of disposable income (after bills, food, mortgage, car, etc) is it? 10%? That's directly cutting into your beer and steak budget.

I don't see how any student can justify this however. You're already getting into massive debt up front in life (fun, eh?)...

It depends on your company's negotiated agreement with AT&T. Some people get equipment discounts plus service discounts, others only service discounts.

Some people (like me) get the discount off both the data plan and the voice plan. When I had a BlackJack, the data plan wasn't bad because I received a discount.

Do you have a source for this? Everything I've seen so far says the new iPhone plan can be used with a FAN Discount.

What are your referring to when you say..."everything..."

All I have seen is people referring to, "I spoke to an At&t representative...blah blah..."

There has been no official word on discounts and the 3G iPhone, unless I missing something. We all know CSR's are hardly official word. Right now I have a Government Employee discount at 20% to be applied only to service. This is on my primary line (voice plan, which is NOT an iPhone) and my iPhone is the 2nd line. I would LOVE to make my iPhone line the primary and receive the discount on the voice AND data.

This up to now, after all this reading and the press release and the update att.com/iphone page is THE only question I have. Everything else as far as pricing seems quite clear.
