Sheesh, this thread is a trainwreck of misinformation.

I have a 550 minute family plan which is 59.99. I've had it for ages and I've never been forced to upgrade. I'll add an iphone 3g to that making it 89.99 and also a 4.99 text message plan making it somewhere around $95.

Now...I'll also receive a 15% discount, so that'll work out to around $80.75 before taxes. I currently pay around $85 after taxes, so that'll be pretty nice...not much of an increase for me.

Before you go an flame, AT&T is treating the iPhone like any other phone, so you should be able to get a discount on the voice and data if you quality for a FAN discount.

I won't be paying the $129.99 because that's for TWO iPhones on a Family Plan.

People need to chill out though.

And where does it say you have to get a new family plan ?

Deal Killer

I'm sorry but this pricing sucks. I was planning on getting an iPhone but won't now.

You people who think these prices are reasonable have been brainwashed by the carriers. $30 a month to be able to surf the web and send emails on a phone??? Might be worth it if I could hook it to my laptop- oh wait ATT won't let me.

But the most ridiculous thing is the text messaging. $5 - 30 to send crappy little text messages?! You are already paying for UNLIMITED data- this should be included. Yes, texts should be free. At the very least have free texting between AT&T customers.

This is a broken system and I really expected Apple to step in and clean it up and am very disappointed.

Listen up everyone, if you think it's too expensive, then don't buy it!

I know anti-consumerism is kind of antithetical on a forum dedicated to a consumer product, but some of us subscribe to a stance of balance.

Speaking to most people - You don't need a new phone. If you do need a new phone, you don't need a tricked out fancy music/video/net/applications smart phone.

iPhone is a luxury purchase. If you think the iPhone is too expensive, then don't buy it. If enough people don't buy it then the companies will lower the price due to lower demand at that price. In the mean time, your happiness should not derive from which luxury objects you own, because then you are doomed to constantly being unhappy. Studies have shown clearly that once you reach a level of income that allows you to be healthy and comfortable, any more money beyond that doesn't make you any happier. Studies have also shown that beyond the necessities like food and proper shelter, purchasing any items beyond that lead to no appreciable increase in overall happiness.

If you think the price is worth it and you have the money to spend on a luxury item, then buy it and enjoy your new toy, there's nothing wrong with that. But if you think the price is too high (whether you can afford it or not) then don't buy it and you will be just as happy with your life overall. And the price may wind up going lower because of your actions too.

"You are not what you own."

Original iPhone 8gb:
$600 + 2-year contract at $60/mo, including 200 text messages = $2,040.

8gb iPhone 3G:
$200 + 2-year contract at $70/mo, plus $5/mo for 200 text messages = $2,000.

Early adopters not so screwed.

And then do what? Go with Verizon? Verizon's data plans are MORE EXPENSIVE than ATT Yes, if the iPhone were on Verizon, it would be more expensive, just like Blackberrys are more expensive on Verizon!
God people, get over the 15 dollars a month, this pricing is the same thing blackberry users have been paying for years!!!

Blackberry has true push email...to date the iphone does not...I know it will, but nothing yet.

what if i borrow someones iphone from someone that has upgraded? will i be able to upgrade to a 3G iphone because i am now an existing iphone user?

Assuming you do this before July 11th, sure.

do you have to activate an old iphone in store? what if i just lie and tell them i just got a hold of an old iphone and pay for the iphone data plan for 2 weeks. will i be able to get the 3g for 199?

GoPhone + Phone Numbers

I am a GoPhone customer, and so I guess i fall under the "non-customer" bracket. But how will I keep my current number? that would suck to have to get a new number...will ATT help me with that?

No, it is not!

we've gone over this again and again. This is fair for people who are already under contract.

arn

Unless I missed something NO MENTION of a price being HIGHER than $199/$299 WORLD-WIDE left the lips of Mr. Jobs! He lied, ATT lied and they both SUCK DONKEY in my opinion. I am a loyal Apple user and I switched from my MUCH MORE RELIABLE Verizon to ATT for the iPhone (which I had THREE as the first two were both DEFECTIVE).

How is that fair when Mr. Jobs said $199/$299 and made NO MENTION of subsidizing from ATT? It is horse-**** and I and going to sell my contract to someone else on that great mobile site that allows for that - and then I am going back to Verizon.

DO NOT REPLAY WITH SOME BS ABOUT HOW YOU ARE HAPPY I AM LEAVING AND I AM AN IDIOT FOR THINKING APPLE AND ATT OWES MY ANYTHING - AS THAT IS BS!

They LIED to our faces (Apple AND ATT) yet we bend over and TAKE IT! Not me! They can blow-off and get crammed before I pay that for something that was PROMISED at $199/$299. You can rationalize that all you want but the fact is clear - he said $199/$299...PERIOD. End of story!

Get BENT Apple and ATT. If I did not like OS X and my MacBook I would chuck that on CraigsList and go with a Linux box.

Oh well - Thank you for making my dicision easy - no new iPhone for me. Anyone want a used iPhone 1st Generation? Maybe I keep it and unlock it for the other GSM service - that might make me feel better knowing I am sticking it to ATT and Apple - ever so slightly. ATT/Apple = S U C K S !

I know, who needs cable when you can be surfing on a 28k modem? Woo hoo!

Who needs 3G when almost EVERYWHERE I go has WiFi available to me?

C'mon....just because 3G is available doesn't mean EVERYONE wants/needs it. What if EDGE suits me just fine to check my stock quotes and the 5 day forecast?

It depends on the individuals lifestyle. If WiFi is available everywhere I go, why not use that.

I'd love to drop $30 bucks off the plan not to have ATTs 3G network.

As a sidenote, if I were to get the phone, I'm paying for the use of 3G, even though it's not available where I am??! That's like paying for ESPN even if my cable provider doesn't carry it!
