Being as how text messages cost them... nothing... $.20 /each is pretty crazy.

Arn, you make me all sorts of warm and fuzzy. :) I still can't believe people who got a free/reduced cost phone in the past 18mo expect another price reduction. Wow.

--When AT&T expects me to STILL sign up for unlimited data at $30/month and a 2-year contract WITHOUT the subsidized price, yes I am still upset.

AT&T thinks we are all idiots! One the one hand, they try to convince us (and have convinced most of the people here) that the iPhone is now just like any other phone, with normal upgrading/subsidy rules applying like they do with any other phone.

HOWEVER, at the same time they say that the iPhone is a unique phone, and therefore you are required to pay the $30/month data plan (unlike any other phone) and that even if you don't get the cheap subsidized price, you still need to make a new 2-year commitment.

AT&T is trying to have it both ways, and people are buying it.

Personally, I'm one of those people who also feels that Steve lied to us at WWDC with the "Everyone will get the iPhone3G at that $199 price" shtick. Not everyone. Neither me nor the millions of other existing AT&T customers. I signed up for AT&T so that I could get an iPhone later one, promised by them that I could simply add it and renew my 2-year contract. Oh well, I guess you can't believe what any company tells you these days.

Starting to agree. Might stay with Verizon and get the HTC Diamond when it comes out. This was supposed to be a "cheaper" iphone and its turning out to be more expensive. I LOVE apple products and was pretty excited about the prospect of getting one of these beauties, but its just as much money as the first with few new features.

Double or triple agree.

What I don't get is everyone's response is so positive, like they wanted to pay more for the same service to begin with.

"Great news, I can't wait to pay more for the same thing that I was getting with the previous phone!"

"No it's called a smartphone plan duh, every other carrier has one and they charge the same thing. I don't care that your bill is $40 less than mine I have an iPhone!"

Wonderful. I thought that people would have at least understood that the other options are cheaper and do offer phones with more features and services. Guess I will be getting flamed for another year. Now I know what a PC user feels like. :D

What about other smartphones/PDA's?
the plans are the same for any smartphone on ATT,
The plans are 10 more for any smartphone on verizon..

But what about Sprint? They only charge most customers $15 a month for unlimited data no matter what phone they have. And then there's the Simply Everything plan.

Hmm, so the equivalent of my $30 Sprint Sero plan would be $90 (actually, I get more minutes, so it's not quite a fair comparison). So maybe a $70/month savings once you factor in tax/ATT fees.

I could buy a new iPod Touch every four months and it would still be cheaper than an iPhone.

Wait, so if I purchased the iPhone June 30 2007, I am eligible for the subsidized price right? Not the early eligibility fee? I am sure this has been asked but I am not looking though all these pages. Just want to make sure so i can feel better about July 11 !!!

do you have to activate an old iphone in store? what if i just lie and tell them i just got a hold of an old iphone and pay for the iphone data plan for 2 weeks. will i be able to get the 3g for 199?

You activate the old iPhones in iTunes, you just need to get a sim from AT&T.

I activated an iPhone on my account a week or so ago and am upgrade eligible. However, I started my current AT&T contract with an iPhone to begin with, so maybe that's why it worked for me...

so does anyone if this is possible? to just add the iphone data plan to your existing plan even if you dont have an iphone so you can lie and say you currently own an iphone.

I don't see anything about free nights or weekends...am I just missing it or did they take that away too?

Just because the average person is an idiot doesn't change the fact that you're wrong and it is definitely not the same thing.

I know they aren't the same thing. See below.

AT&T should not stoop to the level of "common usage" that is incorrect, sir. It's technically wrong to call .20¢ the same as twenty cents.

Why not? It may be wrong, but that's how most people see it as.

Price for 3G Phone is Exactly $10 more on new plan

After reading through all the posts here on new plans, my conclusion for the 4 phones on my family plan, 3 of which are iPhones now and will be 3G iPhones after July 11th is that we will pay exactly... READY:

$10 per iPhone more than we currently pay.

AT&T did nothing with their voice plans. They are same.
AT&T did nothing with their unlimited text plans. They are the same.
AT&T raised the data by $10 and included it in the iPhone price instead of breaking it out like they used to.

That's it.

We will and are planning on paying $10 a month more for the 3G data.

And by comparison, without the iPhone, on Verizon you would pay $239.97 per month for all inclusive data and text plans for 4 phones and 2100 minutes. With AT&T that number comes in at $249.97. BUT...

You get an iPhone! :D :apple:

If you add on a unlimited data plan to the Verizon phone you will be paying $10 more a month then the AT&T plans.

GoPhone + Phone Numbers

I'm a GoPhone + iPhone customer --- it seems as though i'm not an "ATT" customer...but i DO NOT want to switch numbers...will ATT facilitate the move to a new number so I can have my same number on iPhone 3G?
!!! HopefullY!!!

Anyone else think "we" all pay too much for cell phones?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Does anyone actually know how many iPhones the stores will have? I have to be at work at 8, so I'm wondering if I should eveb bother stopping on the way home or just wait a bit.

FYI:

I DID purchase a subsidized phone around 7/1/07, sold it immediately for profit, and purchased the iPhone.

I AM eligibile, according to att.com, even though I got a subsidy only 12 months ago. I really thought I'd be ineligible, which I guess would have been fair.

I think I'll be sticking with my 1st generation 16GB iPhone. The new features on the new iPhone aren't enough for me to upgrade and to pay an extra $15 for practically the same service. I'm not too happy with the increased pricing, but that's what happens when they lower the initial price point of the phone and subsidize and spread the cost out over two years.

I have no use for GPS- I'm smart enough to read a map and figure out where I am and how to get where I want to go. The Google Maps App is pretty awesome as it is. I don't really have a need for 3G- 95% of the time I'm at home or at the office, and we have wifi. I haven't found the EDGE speeds to be too painfully slow- I can wait the extra 5-7 seconds that it takes for a page to load.

Now, if the iPhone 2.0 firmware and the App Store would have been unavailable to me as a 1st gen iPhone user, that would be a whole different story. For me, July 11th isn't iPhone Day, it's App Store Day!

I can wait until the 3rd gen iPhone comes out- that's when I'll upgrade. That one will probably be able to drive your car for you.....

Anyone else think "we" all pay too much for cell phones?

I think that's basically the point of this thread now. Cell phones (worldwide) are overpriced because companies can lock us in there. Look at Sprint right now, look at Cricket (yes, it's not the greatest service, I know): both have prices much lower than ATT/Verizon, and they still make a profit off of each user.

It depends on your company's negotiated agreement with AT&T. Some people get equipment discounts plus service discounts, others only service discounts.

Some people (like me) get the discount off both the data plan and the voice plan. When I had a BlackJack, the data plan wasn't bad because I received a discount.

So is there something *official* from AT&T? That's all I'm really after. I had to go back and forth with them a long time until they said they wouldn't give me squat on the 1st gen iPhone. I'm jealous you get a data discount!! My freakin company has well over 200k employees and we only get voice discount :(

I would just call them when you're about to leave work...

Ok, so i just called at&t business support to enquire about cancelling my acct and just starting another to get the 199 price for the 8gb.This turned out to not be worth it in the long run for various reasons.(Duh) What he did do was put a note in my account approving my account for early upgrade because of a broken device.(this SE w810i has been a piece since i got it in May 07..im on my second refurb)
Also stated that i was willing to cancel my account and move on if they couldnt make this happen.(That was his addition actually) He said that they should honor it in the stores, but who knows.Im the eternal skeptic. So.... thoughts on the prospects of his little note working? Oh and i also had him email me a transcript of the note he left....so i know its in there.

Oh...and before it starts, please dont flame too hard, as i left my flame retardant boxers at home today.

The TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP cost more.

The PHONE does not. Price of the phone only was cut in half.

Get it through your friggin' head already.

Actually the new phone does cost more. You have to compare the original non-subsidized price to the new non-subsidized price.

The new 'low' price of the iPhone3G is a function of AT&T giving you a 24 month loan to cover the other few hundred dollars of the price.

The Cost of 3G

So, now that the numbers are fully revealed I can see now that to move from my standard iPhone to an iPhone 3G it is going to cost me an extra $15 / month for services and by the time you add on fees I'll expect my monthly bill to go from $70/month to about $85 to $90/month. The ultimate question is - is it worth it? Still trying to decide.

And you can tether with the right phone...

Hmm, so the equivalent of my $30 Sprint Sero plan would be $90 (actually, I get more minutes, so it's not quite a fair comparison). So maybe a $70/month savings once you factor in tax/ATT fees.
