Alot of people here need to settle down and take a chill pill.

actually if it's a lot of people...where there's smoke there may be fire. here are the facts:

- you're going to pay ~twice as much or more depending for an iphone vs crackberry = highest phone cost.

- the at&t minute plans are more pricey than other companies (sprint for me) = highest minute plan cost.

- the at&t additional texts are more pricey than other companies = highest text cost.

- + $100 for 8G more...please.

- + $100/yr for mobileme

which brings the cost/mo to be an iphone + mobileme user to $137-157/mo pre-taxes if you actually use your cell phone a lot...plus a $200 or $300 phone, which isn't nearly as impressive an iphone upgrade as apple is trying to portray. plus the added insult of blatant deception, "half the price", my a**.

who are the big winners? apple & at&t. who are the big losers? apple supporters/loyalists. that's why a lot of folks are not being chill

$90 for unlimited everything since when? Have they already dropped their prices since the commercial I saw last night? ($99.99) Also, the point of having unlimited voice vs, say, 450 is only a valid point if you actually use all those mins. I, personally, don't use 450 day time non-AT&T mins a month. I use plenty of weekend and AT&T mins but those are (virtually) unlimited. So - that's $69.99 + $20 for the texts.

So 450 mins isn't enough? Ok - what about 900? Do you honestly use more than 900 mins a month? And don't forget you get rollover with AT&T so if you average only 700 but peak at 1000 that's no big deal at all.

A 900 min plan with unlimited texts would be $109.99 so all of $10 more a month. So, REALLY, you're only saving $10 a month. I realize this line of logic requires you to actually figure out how many mins you actually use but it would make your argument far more viable...

I can't believe you're supporting these prices. It's a cell phone. We shouldn't be talking about $1200 or more a year in costs, especially when you consider the per capita GDP of the world population isn't even $10,000 a year. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita).
These prices should be about half of what they are.

I hope we keep a close eye on how cheap the iPhone is in other countries and take AT&T to task on what they charge. I guarantee most of the world has better speeds, more minutes at lower prices.

Im a bit mystified by the hate and venom...

Im an exsisting ATT customer, and about two years ago i got my razr...I never upgraded, cause....its a phone...it makes calls. nuff said. So Im eligible for the 199.00 price point.

My current plan is 59.99 plus 2 bucks for the 200 txt messages. Im 31 years old enough to remember phones with wires...and a world w/o text messaging...I cant fathom the world of 1000+ txt messages....way too far removed from humanity for me....lest I digress.

So I'm adding 30 bucks for data ( which is aparently what it costs ) and getting an iphone for 199.00...gonna be about 90 bucks to own a phone...thats actually like a small computer with constant internet access....plus im in NY so it makes sense there 3G available.

Sounds fair ? No ones forcing anyone to buy this thing....

I could see it being worth it if you could tether the phone to your laptop, but you can't do that.

I'm rarely not in a wi-fi enabled area, so this really isn't a good deal.

1 - According to AT&T's site the Blackberry Pearl 8120 is $249.99 and the Blackberry 8820 is $299.99 - both after rebate
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phones/pda-phones-smartphones.jsp

2 - the min price remains exactly the same and at least you get rollover - the min plans are easily on par (if not better because of roll-over) than Verizon

3 - No idea - I can't find that info anywhere on Verizon's site

4 - $100 for 8GB is bad? Umm, Verizon charges $40 for 4GB microSD cards and that's the online special price. They are normally $55

5 - Why the heck do you compare mobileme when there is absolutely no equivalent for any other phone on any network?

Sure people are taking it on the chin but also realize that Sprint is no longer AT&T's competitor. It's the Verizon and AT&T show for at least 5 more years...

That's an app on your computer - I would suspect it'll take about a month at the outside for someone to create an app that tethers your phone for you (probably via a Wi-Fi hack). But still - shame you can't do this easily although technically if you are to tether you are *supposed* to pay AT&T/Verizon/Sprint more for that... (I don't know anyone who does that but still that's what's supposed to happen)

Actually they don't. There's a few places that get a better deal (the UK, Switzerland) but most everyone else is just as bad, if not worse (ask the Canadians...) These prices are about on par, maybe a little higher but still not even close to the worst pricing (again, ask the Canadians)

Can I buy an iPhone without the data plan? I want a second one for my wife, but I know she will not use the internet/email features.

True, looking now I should've used the search in thread tool. I see it's come up already a couple of times. I don't think it's ridiculous, however, and there's no way I'd read 28 pages of comments to find out if it had been discussed.
But that's why this 30+ (and counting) page thread is just about 10 unique commsnts / questions being repeated over and over and over ... :(

Ive decided not to get a iPhone. I'm a through and through Man head nad have been so since 96'.

This is ridiculous the pricing. But then people say, it more competitive the company x. If so barely. Truth is all cellular billing is out of hand.

Wake up people. Basically 80$ for the lowest plan + tax is ridiculous. I've seen on some blogs people making the same comments.

Lastly, I can totally afford it but I just feel really uncomfortable about it. My 1st gen iPhone was really cool, but I didnt feel like I was getting raped using it.

I dont use my phone a ton. I use there lowest plan and still get rollover minutes. So when I get a new iPhone that plan goes up 20, then 10 for data? Totally unreasonable... atleast by my numbers.

This pricing I think will bite them in the foot.

I'll get a new iTouch instead, and Skype hack it...

Adding to an existing Family Plan

I was wondering if I'd have to switch from my current 79.99/month family plan to one of the new 129/month plans or if I could just pay for the 39.99 iPhone data plan and keep my current plan...Could anyone clear this up for me?

What? The plan doesn't go up $20. The plan is exactly the same. If you have an EDGE iPhone you pay $10 more for the data - that's it - end of story (maybe add $5 depending on what text plan you've got) so - AT MOST - it's $15 a month for the same plan.

After learning that family plan users have to pay $30 for unlimited text messaging or pay per message (yes, that is right, family plans cannot have anything inbetween), I officially will not be buying 2 iPhones (one for me, one for my wife).

That is $159 + taxes per month for two phones. That is $80+ per phone per month.

To give you an idea, I currently pay $75 for 2 lines on Verizon Wireless (500 min, 250 text messages apiece). So I am more then doubling my cell phone bill.

I don't care what phone it is. No phone is worth more then doubling your bill from $75 to $160.

I just did some math. It is actually cheaper by ~$5 per phone to have two individual iPhone plans (450 min apiece) with the 200 text messages a month ($5) then it is to have a family plan! You get more total minutes that way (900, 450 apiece), while losing the unlimited text messages and the shared minutes. But you know what? 450 per phone is just 50 less then the 500 shared minutes I have on verizon.

Whatever happened to decent discounts for family plans? You clearly don't get that anymore.

AT&T just lost a family plan customer and Apple lost 2 iPhone purchases. This flat out ridiculous.

Search through the thread - people have called AT&T and you can add the 200 SMS to each phone for $5 each if you'd like... Not sure what post but it's in here.

no I had the $150 plan unlimited with the pc card. I dropped the pc card part and they left my plan at $90. they just gave me The intsinct for $85 with mail in rebates. My friend has it. its a good phone, but I'm not paying $3600 for the iphone. My friend got a buddy fly free plane ticket on the release date of the instinct. I didn't get that deal. They gave me a $12 credit of the $99.99 unlimited plan, so my plan would be $90. I'm not trying to sell sprint, but its just smarter for me at this point. I need unlimited calling I recruit college football players and I'm on the phone with them a lot, plus now that I switched to att I have a ton of dropped calls in my house now and most of my family members who have been working for att for 30 plus years ( mother and father) cant even get service in their own homes, made it easier to switch back after seeing the rate plans.
Please explain how your single iPhone would cost $150/mo. (3600/24), I don't get it.

If you break down all the fees for the data and stuff you will see that even if you do "switch" nothing is really changing, so it shouldn't matter.

I'll explain myself for those of you who are curious:

Take the bottom family plan: $129.99 for two iPhones
That's $60 for the main line, $9.99 for the second line and $60 for the unlimited data on each phone ($30 a piece) for 700 minutes

Currently, I have 700 minutes each month and pay $60 for the first line and $9.99 for the additional line. As of right now we have no data.

So, its easy to see that adding the $30 unlimited data plans on top of what I pay now (if I were to get 2 3G iPhones) and switching to the plans announced by AT&T would result in exactly the same price.

:)

Please explain how your single iPhone would cost $150/mo. (3600/24), I don't get it.

$129.99 for unlimited voice/data and another $20 for unlimited texts...

However, still, I don't know a soul that (aside from business use) uses more than 1350 day time, non-AT&T, non-weekend mins a month.

current iphone wanting to upgrade ?

I'm really sorry if this sounds redundant, but I am receiving conflicting info from ATT, Apple, etc. If I am a current ATT iphone customer and want to upgrade to the new iphone, what exactly is entailed? I'm not past due on my account, and I am eligible for the lower price. Does ATT still run a full credit check? I'm concerned because I am in the process of refinancing and I don't want any credit inquiries. Do they (ATT) purely look at my account as part of the credit check process or do they run my SSN, etc? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

No ... people are complaining because the product didnt get any cheaper. If you add the 15 per month extra to the cost of the 16g phone, it totals 659, or more than the original 8 gig. AT$T has really screwed people this time. There service isnt getting better, and there plans cost more with fewer features. Thats why people are complaining.

For most people the data service will be significantly better. Probably more than $10 a month better.

The phone is also better. It has more features and improved over the first iteration.

Why a phone that is better and does more and does it faster should cost less than the same phone that does less and is slower and only came out a year ago should cost LESS is not reasonable.

Not sure why anyone thought the net total investment would be less. That is not how the world or inflation works. The actual price you pay to purchase the phone is indeed less.

The funny thing here is while AT&T has screwed the pooch in how they have presented this information, it is exactly the same information we have all known about for 3-4 weeks. So it is weird that people are freaking out.

Well, it's a good thing that AT&T finally published their pricing structure for iPhone 3G.

It certainly has cleared up everything.

Discount Smishcount

Several months ago I applied for the reduced discount plan for my AT&T and original iPhone. (I work for a school district.) They sent me an email that said "We hope you are enjoying your new, discounted rate," but it never kicked in. Whenever I log onto the AT&T wireless site, it shows that I'm a government employee at the top of the page. But still, no discount.

I finally called AT&T to find out why. It took 3 people (I was transferred a few times) for them to tell me that although I qualified for the discounted plan (it's a whole 6 bucks off a month, but whatever) that it would not actually apply to me as I am an iPhone user.

WHAT?!?! Then how did I qualify in the first place?

So that was a slap in the face. I'm keeping my original iPhone until the contract runs out, because I'm not thrilled with the uptick in service plan cost and I don't need 3G that badly anyway. Then I heard a rumor that the iPhone WILL be added to the discount plan in July....however....

"Beginning July 11, 2008, the Apple iPhone will be added to the Union Plus AT&T Discount Program. Members will be able to purchase the new 3G iPhone at regular price and receive the 10% Union Plus discount off the AT&T service plan. Please note the discount only applies to service using the new 3G iPhone. There will be no discount for service using the original iPhone."

NICE! In order to get a discounted plan, I have to buy a 3G iPhone, pay the $18.00 upgrade fee, get on a more expensive plan, and start paying for texting. GREAT DISCOUNT, NOT!!!

I be keepin' my iPhone and the plan for another year, thank you very much. But it sure will BITE when I have to upgrade after that contract is up - let's hope it's worth it when the iPhone 3G ver. 2.0 comes out!

Please explain how your single iPhone would cost $150/mo., I don't get it.

129.99 = 20 for unlimited text. $150 for the same $90 I had with sprint which worked in every state dang near. I'm an apple guy all the way, but cant see giving money away. That money could go toward a new macbook which i want , because we have 6 imacs and no laptop and could use one when traveling or just get a touch for the airports or hotel stays.. I've been planning for July 11th for a few weeks even took the day off, but now with those prices I cant do it. the only thing I'll be getting in July 11th is two tickets for hellboy 2.

That's because AT&T is still paying Apple a monthly chunk of money so they aren't going to give you a discount when they still have to pay Apple...

Of a note of curiosity where did you see that tid-bit for your discount? Was it on some Union Plus site or did you see that on an AT&T site? (I can't find anywhere that officially says yes/no from AT&T about it)
