They're really going to make it hurt to buy it in an Apple store on launch day. I hope there's a way to streamline the process because I like being able to walk into an Apple store and say "it's broke, fix it".

Lucky you.

My Apple Store it is like "there are 50 people ahead of you. Please make a genius appointment for tomorrow."

Several months ago I applied for the reduced discount plan for my AT&T and original iPhone. (I work for a school district.) They sent me an email that said "We hope you are enjoying your new, discounted rate," but it never kicked in. Whenever I log onto the AT&T wireless site, it shows that I'm a government employee at the top of the page. But still, no discount.

I finally called AT&T to find out why. It took 3 people (I was transferred a few times) for them to tell me that although I qualified for the discounted plan (it's a whole 6 bucks off a month, but whatever) that it would not actually apply to me as I am an iPhone user.

WHAT?!?! Then how did I qualify in the first place?

So that was a slap in the face. I'm keeping my original iPhone until the contract runs out, because I'm not thrilled with the uptick in service plan cost and I don't need 3G that badly anyway. Then I heard a rumor that the iPhone WILL be added to the discount plan in July....however....

"Beginning July 11, 2008, the Apple iPhone will be added to the Union Plus AT&T Discount Program. Members will be able to purchase the new 3G iPhone at regular price and receive the 10% Union Plus discount off the AT&T service plan. Please note the discount only applies to service using the new 3G iPhone. There will be no discount for service using the original iPhone."

NICE! In order to get a discounted plan, I have to buy a 3G iPhone, pay the $18.00 upgrade fee, get on a more expensive plan, and start paying for texting. GREAT DISCOUNT, NOT!!!

I be keepin' my iPhone and the plan for another year, thank you very much. But it sure will BITE when I have to upgrade after that contract is up - let's hope it's worth it when the iPhone 3G ver. 2.0 comes out!

Why do you think that adding a new iPhone will change or up your RATE plan? Because it wont, your original RATE plan will remain unchanged and the new iPhone data will just be added to the line with the 3G iPhone.

The new plans listed on the At&t iPhone site are for NEW customers.

His frustration is that he went through all this effort to get the FAN discount to only find out it doesn't apply to the iPhone. Then he reads that the iPhone is going to get the FAN discount only to find out it only applies to the 3G version (even if there's a fair reason it's still frustrating). He was just hoping to get a decent discount. Also - his plan would go up since he'd, at best, get $6 off per month but the bill would go up $10 (for the new data plan).

Explain to me how this is more affordable? (Fraud)

Some people may never have $500 sitting around to spend on something like a phone.

Yet they will have $199 or $299 lying around.

So for those people the phone is more affordable. Heck it is more affordable to everyone because it COSTS less.

When you factor in the cost of money and the rest, the $15 difference in net price probably goes completely away.

These prices are hilarious. $70/month! Its like throwing your money away. And just to be "plugged in" and always available.

Where did you learn math?

59.99 x 24 = $1,439.76 + $399.00 (iphone) = $1,836.76

74.99 x 24 = $1,799.76 + $199 (iphone) + 39.00 (dock) =$2,037.76

If you want to write $200+ checks for everyone, then it would be more affordable.

I went from $90 a month unlimited everything with sprint last week. Then I switched over to att for the iphone and now I'll be paying $150 for everything plus $199-$299 for the phone?

Small price to pay to get rid of Sprint.

Why a phone that is better and does more and does it faster should cost less than the same phone that does less and is slower and only came out a year ago should cost LESS is not reasonable.

Yes it is... it's called Moore's law.

I agree with your sentiment. While we can disect "affordable" into a word that accounts for a purchase over time while in comparison to other devices while the planets are aligned yet before the ice caps melt and so on, it is completely reasonable to hear Jobs say "more affordable" and expect that the total cost of a new iPhone 3G with required plan will be less than a new iPhone 1G with required plan.

Since Apple just makes the phone and he was specifically talking ONLY about the phone, I don't thing such an assumption was reasonable.

I was going to update to the new 3G, but I think I'll keep my $120/year and free text messages and keep on trucking. This is just asinine. Apple was leading the way with a product that wasn't necessarily a set of shackles (could buy it at Apple store and walk out the door w/ no questions). This is silly.

I have to say, as much as I'm NOT impressed with the price increase (IMHO I think wireless tech should get cheaper not more expensive... regardless of speed), I was surprised to see that my phone is eligible for upgrade pricing. I have only had it for 7 months so I'm a bit surprised by that one.

He did not make the phones cost less. Cheaper, yes.

He did not make them cheaper, nor make them cost less. He made them MORE AFFORDABLE.

Which is exactly what he said he did and exactly what you seem to be taking him to task for...

So he did what he said he did, yet you claim he didn't because he didn't do something he didn't say he did.

Why? They can upcharge you $15/month and lock you in for even longer. Smart move on their part.

So if I get the unsubsizdized one at $699 (eek), can i just simply plug in my sim card and use it like any other phone?

HAHA. Amazingly good point. I just figured they would try to squeeze every penny out of their customers unless they were at least over a year. I'm on the 1500 txt plan so they love me I'm sure. I'm happy with the current iPhone so I'm staying put for awhile. You do bring up a very good point tho.

Mmmm... nice try, but Moore's law would only apply if the core hardware were different, and incase you didn't know, it isn't.
My response was to indicate that it is "reasonable" to believe that over time costs for tech should decrease, not increase, even when getting more technology. While Moore specifically cites numbers of resistors, it is generally accepted that this applies in other ways. Time is a factor, in addition to specific components.

Bottom line is that it is completely reasonable to expect to get more for less or at the very least the same price.

I was not asking you to point me what 1,000,000 fanboys have posted. I would just like someone to admit that the 3G phone costs more.

Maybe you'd prefer to listen to "It's a Small World" a million more times?

And for those that think that "Worldwide rollout" and "Worldwide pricing" means U.S./AT&T:
I'm wondering about last year, in only the U.S., when everyone was complaining and outraged that Apple dropped the price of the device by $200: The plans stayed the same, so Total Cost of Ownership went down $200 total, how many people here complained "The cost of the iPhone went down almost 10%!! ($200 out of over $2,000) After two months!! And I'm a loyal customer and they're *whatever*-ing me!!" My guess is zero people said that, and I'm sure very few. No, everyone, or most, complained that "The cost went down 1/3 after two months! They're *whatever*-ing us, the loyal Apple customer base!!" Because ... "cost of the phone" = ummm.. "cost of the PHONE." The 3G iPhone DOES cost $199 "for most people in most of the world," or whatever. I'm disappointed that the AT&T PLAN costs more than what I currently pay for the Edge iPhone, and I'm not happy that I'm forced to be with AT&T without any pricing perks, and of course anyone who signs ANY cell phone contract should think about whether they can/want to pay the cost for the entire length of the contract, but the PHONE is cheaper.

Currently w/ t-mobile sidekick:
1500 anytime minutes
unlimited data & text messages
cost = $59

if I get the iPhone 3g:
900 anytime minutes w/ free nights & weekends
unlimited data & text messages
cost = $109

nearly 2x the price, and less minutes?

Actually they don't. There's a few places that get a better deal (the UK, Switzerland) but most everyone else is just as bad, if not worse (ask the Canadians...) These prices are about on par, maybe a little higher but still not even close to the worst pricing (again, ask the Canadians)

To that I'd say wait and see how the pricing pans out in Asia...

You beat me on T-Mobile - is that a special Sidekick plan?

here is what really eeks me...I always assumed they included sms messages with the original because every other text message plan was essentially unfair since the phone did not have the capability for MMS and all those plans are priced to include audio, video and picture messages.

But here we are...still no MMS and we are paying for an MMS package. As far as I am concerned it should $2.00 at most for 200 plain old SMS messages...makes me really want to get an MMS capable phone and send the hell out of video messages for the next couple of years.

I think what bothers most about this...is that i don't recall anyone else ever making this point...maybe its the lawyer in me trying to dissect it too much...but for just plain old SMS we should pay less!
