$129.99 for unlimited voice/data and another $20 for unlimited texts...

However, still, I don't know a soul that (aside from business use) uses more than 1350 day time, non-AT&T, non-weekend mins a month.
so if I have personal and business calls during the day, incoming and outgoing I would be well over 1350 in minutes. last month I used 4836 last month. I don't want to spend $100 to have to managing iphone minutes.

I just got off the phone with Billy Crabtree a sales associate from AT&T. I'm an existing customer who switched to AT&T from Sprint last year in the hopes of getting an iPhone. When I switched the iPhone was announced, but yet unavailable.

Now that iPhone 3G is coming out I'm thinking that it's time to finally get one. I have found that my AT&T account is not available for an upgrade which is understandable as I'm on a 24month commitment with a $175 cancellation fee.

What I can't understand is what Billy tells me the fees per month for the iPhone are.

Here's an example:

For my voice service I spend about $85/month for TWO phones.

Billy tells me that in addition to the purchase of a $400 iPhone I must add a data plan that will raise my bill by 39.99 a month. That's $124.99/month! PLUS a $400 iPhone.

That's unacceptable.

There's more. Billy told me that EVERY existing AT&T customer will have to add at least 39.99 a month to their bill to upgrade to an iPhone. This fee is for the DATA plan that AT&T needs to charge.

In addition he said that it's not much better for NEW AT&T customers who should be expected to pay a minumim of $93/month per line for a voice/data plan for the new iPhone.

Does anyone else think these prices are a little extreme!?!

I originally thought that AT&T is too busy wooing new customers rather than paying attention to keeping their existing customers, but I'm not so sure they want either...

No I don't think it is extreme.

If you or anyone else just wants a phone to talk or text then you do not need an iPhone (or a Blackberry for that matter). If you want data, web surfing and so on, and want all of those extras, you need to pay for that... and pay extra.. You are paying for the billions they are investing to create and expand their 3G network and the bandwith to surf the web for hours on end..

And yes ATT is a business so profit is in order. You can stick with you RAZR and keep costs much, much lower. You need to decide if you need the features an iPhone provides.

129.99 = 20 for unlimited text. $150 for the same $90 I had with sprint which worked in every state dang near. I'm an apple guy all the way, but cant see giving money away. That money could go toward a new macbook which i want , because we have 6 imacs and no laptop and could use one when traveling or just get a touch for the airports or hotel stays.. I've been planning for July 11th for a few weeks even took the day off, but now with those prices I cant do it. the only thing I'll be getting in July 11th is two tickets for hellboy 2.

It might not necessarily be much solice, but you should really look at your minutes usage and see if you really need 1350 minutes. Remember too that AT&T has rollover minutes. I have a good 2000 minutes saved up, and it only took a few month.

I've had a Family plan account shared with my mother for $39.99, and we added my father a couple years ago for $9.99. I also have the unlimited texting to at&t customers plan + 200 texts to anyone for $9.99.

I just plan on upgrading my line to the iPhone 3g, and keeping my texting plan. Is it possible to keep what I have currently, but just pay the extra $30 a month for iPhone data, and have the subsidized price?

Or, do I have to get an entirely new family plan for us?

Don't know if the lady I talked to just doesn't know where to look but she said that they don't have any info about FAN discounts for the 3G iPhone - great...

4836 day time, non-AT&T, non weekend mins? If so then, dang, that's impressive. But still - if it's business usage you should get the company you work for to pay some of it OR take the business use % off of your taxes at the end of the year...

I thought that they said ALL current iPhone owners qualified for the upgrade? I currently have an iPhone but I am NOT elligible for an upgrade yet. Will I have to pay $399/$499?

Have you gotten another phone before your iPhone in the last two years?

To let you know...Loss leaders are illegal and considered preditorial practice (sp?) which is not legal.

Better check your information.

There is nothing illegal about loss leaders. I can point out a handful in any supermarket newspaper ad in the country any day of the week.

Uh, you don't know the phone market very well, do you...

AT&T isn't going to be packet sniffing. Exchange to mobile devices uses EAS or RPC over HTTP. They'd have to sniff every package to see what it contains, and since EAS is encrypted... well... let's just say that would be almost impossible.

Also, if you look at Apple's own page, they list Exchange support with the 2.0 update for earlier phones. It would be ridiculous for them to add support and then have it blocked by AT&T.

I had a Verizon account with a Motorola phone that was capable of doing internet connectivity through BlueTooth.

Nifty idea, right? Perfect way for Verizon to rape (extort) more money out of me right? I can't count how many times that would have saved my cheerios, had Verizon actually ENABLED that feature... Any other carrier with THE SAME PHONE supported that feature, except Verizon.

It DOES happen. It's stupid and childish but DOES happen...

Blocking Exchange wouldn't be hard nor would it be unlikely for those not with a 'corporate' account. Not many homes have a full blown, let alone legal, Microsoft Exchange Server installed and working... I think that Microsoft's 'active push' technology doesn't use 'common' ports. I'll have to look into that but I don't think that they do. Would be easy to block them then, too easy especially if Apple followed Microsoft's lead...

Then it would be stooooopid to buy an iPhone for her.

Well, not necessarily.
She would still use it under wi-fi and plus all the goodies of the media iPod that iPhone offers. But surely is not worth to pay $30 month for that. Better buy an iPod Touch instead.

That's why I left Verizon - they cripple the living hell out of their phones. That's another reason I'm glad AT&T got the iPhone since Verizon would probably kill 3/4 of the features and require to use their *****ty Verizon branded software...

OK sorry , but you wrote : she would not be using the email/internet features. But since she would use WI FI, well then maybe yes. Yes you could buy a touch, but then she would have to carry two devices. A phone and a touch.

exactly, that why I was wondering if the data plan could be avoided. Oh well, she does not need it anyway. ;)

Not illegal.

But what is would be for a store or a chain to knowingly advertise a very low priced item that they know that they won't have in stock so that they can divert people to some other item at a higher price.

That is called 'bait and switch' and is illegal in most if not all states. If you went in to the local AT&T store on opening day and wanted to buy an iphone and they didn't have the 8G (and would never have it) but could sell you the 'no commitment' 16G for $699, that would be a likely 'bait and switch' tactic and could be illegal. Well, or if they offered to sell an iphone for $99.00 and you got there and they, of course, didn't have any and offered you the full price iphone. Again, a no-no...

If you break down all the fees for the data and stuff you will see that even if you do "switch" nothing is really changing, so it shouldn't matter.

I'll explain myself for those of you who are curious:

Take the bottom family plan: $129.99 for two iPhones
That's $60 for the main line, $9.99 for the second line and $60 for the unlimited data on each phone ($30 a piece) for 700 minutes

Currently, I have 700 minutes each month and pay $60 for the first line and $9.99 for the additional line. As of right now we have no data.

So, its easy to see that adding the $30 unlimited data plans on top of what I pay now (if I were to get 2 3G iPhones) and switching to the plans announced by AT&T would result in exactly the same price.

:)

Finally, someone that gets it. All the plans that AT&T put on their site today assume that each line is an iPhone. If one does the math as abiyng87 did above, then one would see that every one of the plans is basically the same base AT&T plans plus an additional $30 in data per line. Two things have changed since the last phone: 1) the cost of your data went up $10 from $20 to $30 and 2) txt is not included, so you need a txt plan now which varies depending if you get 200($5), 1500($15), or unlimited($20) per line or spend $30 and get unlimited txt for every line on your account. I'm just not getting how everyone is ranting when this is the exact same pricing as it was when WWDC went on.

That's because AT&T is still paying Apple a monthly chunk of money so they aren't going to give you a discount when they still have to pay Apple...

Of a note of curiosity where did you see that tid-bit for your discount? Was it on some Union Plus site or did you see that on an AT&T site? (I can't find anywhere that officially says yes/no from AT&T about it)

Yes, knowing the reason doesn't relieve the sting.:(

I'm a 1099 guy, but spending extra money is not worth it.

Does anyone actually know how many iPhones the stores will have? I have to be at work at 8, so I'm wondering if I should eveb bother stopping on the way home or just wait a bit.

TRUST ME. Wait. There will be plenty. Don't panic. I was there day ONE for the original iPhone. They had tons of them days after the big day.

What happen with the family plans that you add a line for $10????
WHO is the customer that orders the family plan for 360+40 per line?

AND STILL NO INSURANCE:mad:

I think I'll be sticking with my 1st generation 16GB iPhone. The new features on the new iPhone aren't enough for me to upgrade and to pay an extra $15 for practically the same service. I'm not too happy with the increased pricing, but that's what happens when they lower the initial price point of the phone and subsidize and spread the cost out over two years.

I have no use for GPS- I'm smart enough to read a map and figure out where I am and how to get where I want to go. The Google Maps App is pretty awesome as it is. I don't really have a need for 3G- 95% of the time I'm at home or at the office, and we have wifi. I haven't found the EDGE speeds to be too painfully slow- I can wait the extra 5-7 seconds that it takes for a page to load.

Now, if the iPhone 2.0 firmware and the App Store would have been unavailable to me as a 1st gen iPhone user, that would be a whole different story. For me, July 11th isn't iPhone Day, it's App Store Day!

I can wait until the 3rd gen iPhone comes out- that's when I'll upgrade. That one will probably be able to drive your car for you.....

Word for word, I'm right there with you. Remember, this isn't so much iPhone version 2, but iPhone 3G version 1. A year from now, iPhone 3G version 2 will be out, and I can only assume it will rock even more.:)

The thing that bothers me is I see a lot of people telling me "Well this is how it works with the huge discount AT&T gave you on your last phone."

My phone is the Samsung Slider which retails for $25. I knew I wanted an iPhone so I purposely did not buy a subsidized phone. I paid that $25, AFTER a mail in rebate. It seems to me I got ripped off by AT&T and now they want more money?

Corporate America strikes again! Why are we all such peons.

If you did not get a subsidized phone why did you sign a 2 year contract?

It's still 9.99 for each additional line - they just roll the unlimited data in there with it so it's 39.99.

Maybe that "family" from the FLDS in West Texas?? ;)

Way around paying full price

let's say you do this to get the cheap iphone price. You have att and are not eligble for upgrade until 2009, what if i get an iphone right now and then show up with my iphone and tell them here is my old iphone i want to get a new one. Wont that mean I'll pay the 299 price. My friend is going to give me his old iphone.
