I pre-order at an AT&T store on the 7th at 4:30pm by adding another line to my account. I was just able to go back to that same store, cancel that order and get the iPhone. I don't know if that helps anyone.
 
For those of you having bad luck with your pre-order being delayed:

I just walked into my local AT&T store and picked up a 4S, no problem (I never pre-ordered or waited in line). They said they have a ton in stock. It might be worth a shot.
 
You can have them cancel your backorder and re-instate your eligibility pricing and buy in store.

I just did this very same thing.

I just went to the At&T W.LA store in los angeles to do that and they said they would not. I even talked to the manager, and I asked very calmly and nicely, too. eff at&t in the a$$. I'm done with them. I've been on 'in progress' since last saturday. Ordered a 16gb black on friday at 10:30am online and have been stuck in backordered status ever since.
 
So, GREAT NEWS. I went into the AT&T store down the street from my house.. it's currently 10:43AM PST here in Cali, and well past the time of them selling out of these phones. I walk in and simply say "Got any left?" the lady gives me a frown and goes "No, we're sold out. Sorry." and I feel my day ruined. I pre ordered last Friday and am still back ordered, with my money back in my bank account and this could not have worked out for any better.

It turns out, even though they sold out easily in their FIRST shipment, carrier stores will most likely get multiple shipments of the phones throughout the day, and if you go in and talk to them and be polite, they might do what they did for me, for you. I won't say anything in specific because idk if it's against their rules or anything but let's just say that if a new shipment comes in (which she pretty much guaranteed me that it would) I will be a new iPhone 4S owner..

THANK GOODNESS for AT&T and their ability to screw things up when it comes to pre-orders. :D

Worked for me.

I remained calm and nice.

First they offered me a free case, but I didn't want that.
Then they decided to just cancel the old order.
They definitely CAN do it, if they are willing.

Phone was delivered at 10:24. Person I relied on to be there missed it. Now I have to wait till Monday. Called UPS they said I can't pick it up and no Saturday delivery per AT&T restrictions.

Summary - Sucks

No Sat delivery? Hmm. Not sure if mine is coming Fed Ex but an ATT operator just told me mine has a delay due to the T and C being reissued, but I should get a tracking notice today and get it tomorrow (Sat).

Hey nooaah...maybe you can give peon91 the store/managers number...that way the they can explain how to perform the cancellation/sale transaction!!!

Or if it wasn't nooaah...someone was able to cancel their pre-order and reorder in store!
 
So disappointed in AT&T

IM SO UPSET!!! My upstairs neighbor just got his phone, and his orders processed on 10/10!!!!!!!!! WHat the *******. I ordered the 10/7 and im still on back order. JUST SAW THE UPS GUY LEAVE!:(:(

I pre ordered the blk 64GB on 10/7 at the store at 1pm CST and was told it was backordered. at first they told me 14-21 days now they are saying 21-28 days. I got this response from AT&T online chat:

Tyemika G Jackson: Allow me to research your order today.
you: please do
Tyemika G Jackson: "Backordered" normally means that there is not sufficient inventory to satisfy an order. However, since the iPhone 4S is not released until 10/14/2011, every pre-order will show as backordered, there is no stock officially showing in the system until that date. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Tyemika G Jackson: I understand this must be very frustrating. At this time due to high volume of orders, your order is on back order. I can assure you we are working to have your device shipped as soon as possible. The device will be shipped within 21-28 days.
you: what was the point of pre order? so are you saying I will not get the phone until November???
you: 21-28 days of when?
Tyemika G Jackson: It can take 21-28 days before you will receive the device.
Tyemika G Jackson: After 10/14/11.

Whats worse, the line is over at the store and they still have stock! They will not let me cancel my order and get one from the store!!! I am soooooo upset :mad::( you are not alone jubarri33!
 
Well I just had my little package delivered by Fedex. Funny thing, he rang the doorbell and then left it on the doorstep - no signature needed I guess. We were home but by the time we even got to the door he was already driving off lol

Yes Thank you!!!!! I dont know why they cant trade what they have on hand and canel the order. It does not make sense. Especially since it was supposed to be first come, first serve. I helped him send his order in on the 10/10 that how i know. he called me 10 minutes ago, asking me if i got mine, because he got his. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Just called the front office and nothing for me. Theres 3 AT&T stores around me with plenty of phones but no thank to AT&T I have to wait 21-28 days. because i Ordered on 10/7:???
 
so I've tried everything, no way to cancel my in-store pre-order. No one can tell me when it will ship and they wouldn't even let me upgrade another line then return the shipped phone when it arrives to restore eligibility because I don't have a micro-sim since I'm using a 3G and not a 4 right now.

While I was at the store a dozen people walked in and out with new 4Ss, they've got tons in stock and there's no way for me to get one. Literally the most frustrating thing I've ever tried to buy. The one time I actually try to get the newest phone at launch, pre-order it and everything and I get ****ed.


so ****ing ridiculous. **** AT&T.
 
UPS just drove by my house, stopped in front of my neighbors' house then left.

What happened? Do they have a bunch of different trucks going around?
Or is it possible they skipped me to save time and I'll have to pick it up.

Seriously? I had no luck over the phone but I'm gonna go over there right now and politely ask them to cancel my order and sell me one of their in stock phones.

I'll escalate it from there if the lowlevel rep says no.

Ordered in-store on Friday around 10 AM Central.
The online tracking page is still showing back-ordered '1', and no tracking # or email yet.
However, I just got the following text from AT&T about 30 min. ago:


AT&T Free Msg: Thx for your iPhone order! Remember, no need to visit a store. Your device will ship directly to the address stated on your confirmation e-mail.

We'll have to see what happens.

That is the mass message they are sending out to us in-store pr-order suckers that got put on the "direct fullfillment" limbo list. I personally haven't gotten it yet, but a bunch of people posted it. it just means "please don't come to the store to raise hell because we actually have phones but we already locked you in!"
I just visited my local store. There was virtually no line. Yet they refused to cancel my pre-order and give me an in-store phone from their stock. I told them I know for a fact other stores are doing it for their customers. Sorry, no soup for you, they said.
I explained to the store employee ( manager didn't bother to show face) that I didn't like being put at the back of the line behind all the on line and phone-in orders as well as the walk ins today. She tried to tell me I wasn't "put at the back of the line", but I told her to keep her semantics, the fact remains that I am being told to wait 14-21 days while others get their phones. And to inform the manager he screwed up big time and that you can't lie to people in this day of online forums where everyone shares their experiences. She didn't refute a word I said and just kept apologizing, but kept saying the manager wouldn't change his position. I went to the Westfield NJ store, by the way. I advise everyone to steer clear of there. They are not customer friendly!

My UPS driver is such a tease.

I was woking in my office at home which looks out over the street. Saw the UPS truck heading towards my house. I make my way downstairs just as the driver gets to the end of the cul-de-sac, he makes a u-turn then heads away from my house. He delivers a package to another house. Starts to head away then he backs up and turns around to deliver my phone.

I guess I can't complain too much. My package had "by end of day" for delivery time. Normally UPS doesn't get to my neighborhood until 5 PM or so.
