I pre-order at an AT&T store on the 7th at 4:30pm by adding another line to my account. I was just able to go back to that same store, cancel that order and get the iPhone. I don't know if that helps anyone.
Got that same text. And no it does not mean it is getting processed. I just checked the status of mine, and it still is backordered...
You can have them cancel your backorder and re-instate your eligibility pricing and buy in store.

I just went to the At&T W.LA store in los angeles to do that and they said they would not. I even talked to the manager, and I asked very calmly and nicely, too. eff at&t in the a$$. I'm done with them. I've been on 'in progress' since last saturday. Ordered a 16gb black on friday at 10:30am online and have been stuck in backordered status ever since.
Phone was delivered at 10:24. Person I relied on to be there missed it. Now I have to wait till Monday. Called UPS they said I can't pick it up and no Saturday delivery per AT&T restrictions.

For those of you having bad luck with your pre-order being delayed:

IM SO UPSET!!! My upstairs neighbor just got his phone, and his orders processed on 10/10!!!!!!!!! WHat the *******. I ordered the 10/7 and im still on back order. JUST SAW THE UPS GUY LEAVE!

I pre ordered the blk 64GB on 10/7 at the store at 1pm CST and was told it was backordered. at first they told me 14-21 days now they are saying 21-28 days. I got this response from AT&T online chat:
Whats worse, the line is over at the store and they still have stock! They will not let me cancel my order and get one from the store!!! I am soooooo upsetyou are not alone jubarri33!
Well I just had my little package delivered by Fedex. Funny thing, he rang the doorbell and then left it on the doorstep - no signature needed I guess. We were home but by the time we even got to the door he was already driving off lol
Worked for me.
I remained calm and nice.
First they offered me a free case, but I didn't want that.
Then they decided to just cancel the old order.
They definitely CAN do it, if they are willing.

Ordered in-store on Friday around 10 AM Central.
The online tracking page is still showing back-ordered '1', and no tracking # or email yet.
However, I just got the following text from AT&T about 30 min. ago:
AT&T Free Msg: Thx for your iPhone order! Remember, no need to visit a store. Your device will ship directly to the address stated on your confirmation e-mail.
We'll have to see what happens.
