If any of you poor souls are stuck in this hell (as I was until about an hour ago), there may be hope for you!

I preordered at my local ATT store on 10/7 at 12:30pm PDT. Salesrep "promised" that I would have it by today "or possibly sooner." I was still holding out hope that my phone would arrive until Wednesday, when my status changed to backordered and stayed that way. No tracking number, just "in process" and "pending shipment."

I called the 800 number this morning to check shipping status. They told me that since I didn't purchase online or over the phone, I had to call the store I preordered from. So I called the store about 9:10am and asked for status. The lady I spoke to said that I would have my phone in 2-3 weeks. I said that was unacceptable as one of their reps promised me I would have it no later than today. It took her a while to find my order, but when she finally did, she said that I could come down to the store, and if they had the model I wanted (16GB black), they would cancel my order, restore my upgrade eligibility immediately, cancel my pending c/c charge and sell me an iPhone from their stock.

Needless to say I hauled butt down there, waited about 15 minutes in line outside (they had a DJ and were giving away cupcakes, bottled water, Monster energy drinks and smoothies), got inside and they took care of business. All told, it took about an hour for me to walk out with my new iPhone, but I consider that time well spent as I'd be waiting another couple weeks minimum if I had just stuck with my preorder.

So if you ordered from an actual ATT store and are in backorder hell, I suggest at least calling them to see if they can do it. The worst they can do is say no, but if they truly want to give excellent customer service (as was the case with my store in Huntington Beach, CA), they will do it.

Good luck!

I am living proof that this is legit. Don't give up hope. Go back to the store and talk to the manager.

However, if your order has moved to "shipped" status, that may be a problem. Mine hadn't and that's why they were able to do it for me.

Ha! Thanks for the advice, but I did that. My AT&T manager in Westfield NJ is an ass and just says "no soup for you".

wow, I really am the only person who can't get my phone today. I'm stuck on backordered. went to the store and even the manager wouldn't cancel it for me. why the **** is it only my store who are being such *******s? Tried calling 611 and the business # too, they both told me try the store.

Are you backordered, or has it been processed?

Backordered is not next week, but the week after. if yours is processed/shipped it will be there between today and Monday.

Mine says "Processed", but they have no idea when it will ship. Since it is processed, it cannot be canceled.

Do you think it will still ship today or Monday?

Sooooo... I haven't received my phone yet.. :-( I told my mom I feel like I'm in iPhone 4S purgatory!!! Lol when it gets here I'll be happy!!!

So we're on the phone with the Premier CSR who fixed our billing issue. The same one who told us we should still receive it today. Now she's telling me because of the billing delay it will be 7-14 days.

My wife is waiting for a manager/supervisor/someone higher up to try and convince them to overnight it, but it's probably a long shot.

Our AT&T store also told us no way to cancel the preorder. The manager is off til Monday. She was the one who convinced us to preorder thru the stre.
She will be hearing from us first thing Monday.

SUCCESS!!!!

I called my local AT&T store, and they have plenty of stock. So I called to cancel and they wouldn't. Screw that! I'll return the suckers if they show up! So I went to the store, and I guess because I'm buying four lines and coming over from Verizon, the guy treated me right. He got my online order cancelled, got me my four phones, and I'm a happy camper.

Still waiting to get them activated, but needed to tweet my experience! Oh, wait, this is MacRumors...

On the phone with ATT customer service right now... They are telling me that since I pre-ordered in-store, I'll have to go back to the store to cancel the pre-order. The problem is, I already went to the store and tried to cancel, and the store told me that they could not cancel my pre-order because it was pending...

I feel like I'm getting the run around.

You are getting the run around... When I walked into the store I was in Pending status, but backorder was 1. The manager double checked the DF screen and it allowed the CSR to cancel it even though I purchased the pre-order from a different store. I took today off so I could work on my final essay, so I went to the store to procrastinate. You may not have time to full with this anymore, but if you do, I would try a different store. The store that processed my pre-order told me "cannot cancel" but the other store told me yes.

so ticked. my status is STILL backordered, I ordered off of the premier website at 8:15am CST 10/7. Somehow it's like my order was the only one that made the cutoff on the website and still never got shipped. it figures. I don't even have an iPhone, I'm stuck with a freezing dumbphone that's falling apart as I've had it over 2 years now. I just talked to the rep and they're clueless as to when it will be shipped, but I can't cancel the pre-order until it is shipped, so I have no hopes of getting one today. SCREW ATT.

Ordered at 7am eastern. 16gb black. Delivered at 2pm today. Called and activated it as a line different than the one upgraded. Only took 30 mins to do that. Been enjoying it for the past 2 hours. Those that haven't gotten theirs yet. It's coming soon. Not going to lie, I would be anxious too.

My online premiere order literally just changed over to processing, although I have not received a tracking number yet. This seems to jive with what I was told ont he phone earlier, that my phone will probably ship tomorrow.

God, it feels good to not see "backordered" any more. :)

I'm just praying my schedule this weekend/next week allows for me to be home when they deliver. If they leave it on my step without requiring a signature, it WILL be stolen.

And I still don't have anything. No ability to check status, no tracking number, no phone, nothing.

How the heck is 21 days considered a pre-order?!?

I was backordered until an hour ago. That changed to processing.

Now showing shipping date of 10/13/2011

Getting closer!!!!

Any screenshot of which page you're looking at?

Mine is like this. Says that item status is processing but the shipment status is backordered.

Tried calling and got the run around a few times and that they couldn't cancel. Tried calling again to get another person but I was on hold to their crappy music for over half hour with no answer.

AT&T sucks so bad right now.

Awesome. 4:30 needs to come faster... I will be booking it over to AT&T.

Having literally read thousands of posts on this thread since Sunday, I just wanted to say that it is at least possible to have an AT&T store cancel your pre-order. Like many others here, I pre-ordered at an AT&T store and was given the runaround. I walked into a different AT&T store this afternoon, they saw that no phone had shipped, canceled it, and sold me one that was in stock. This runs counter to anything I heard over the phone or through AT&T chat.

So, for those of you with that option, I'd give it a try. They did say that if a phone has shipped, then you can't cancel it... but, otherwise, it seems simple.
