All, I called ATT , canceled my order , went to the store , waited for 30 mins and got my 4S ready and activated.
 
Just got off the phone with the store manager I pre-ordered my phone with.

He said there are plenty of iphones 4s's in the store right now, a white 32gb to be exact.

I told him I preordered my iphone4s last friday, and it still says backordered on the website. He said, preordering doesn't mean you'll get your iphone on launch day...

Right when he said that, I immediately, said...ahem, do you have a white 32gb phone in stock? he said "yes",

then I said, what time do you close?, he said "9pm"

Thanks, then i hung up.

I have no time to deal with idiots. Im calling to cxl my preorder and going to go get my freaking iphone 4s tonight!
 
I think people who are able to cancel their orders don't have the "Active" status on their order. When I called premier, they said "Active" meant they were shipping by the end of this weekend and so they couldn't cancel your order at that point.

My experience at the Westfield NJ store was that they didn't even check my status. It was just a firm no. It will come when it comes, was the attitude. And that is in spite of them admitting that if I had ordered online, at the Apple Store, on the phone, and maybe through the homeless guy at the corner, I'd probably have my phone today. Nice, right? Worst customer service experience I've had in a long time. We'll see how many people I can talk out of ever stepping foot in that manager's store over the next few years as a prominent local professional here in town.
If I had time, I'd go fight some more, but honestly, I'm done. I have no more time to devote to this. The local AT&T store, with corporate AT&T a willing accomplice by setting up this system, has screwed me out of getting my phone for a few weeks. Lesson learned. Avoid the AT&T store "experience" at all costs. They are out for your money and could care less about whether you are happy.
Have fun with your phones everyone. I'll get it in a few weeks and then I'll go by and tell that manager how he blew it and send corporate a detailed account of my lousy AT&T experience so it's on his record. Maybe at that point they'll offer me a free phone case or something to try and make me happy. LMAO. Funny how businesses always offer you stupid crap you don't need after they already lost your future business.
 
I was in the same boat with those who ordered from the store Friday and were stuck on back-ordered. I talked to a CSR today who told me my phone had not shipped and they couldn't tell me when it would. I called my local store to see if I could reverse the order and pick up one in person and was told I would need to come down and talk to a manager. When I asked, he did say it would be worth my time to do so.

So I went down there a little over an hour ago. I was very polite and explained that I was only there because they couldn't give me ANY indication of when I might receive my phone. I also mentioned how frustrated the mixed messages are. They were very helpful, and apologetic as well. They looked at my order and confirmed that there was no estimated shipping date. Then they cancelled my order and activated my new iPhone 4S. No double-charges to worry about since I was in back-order status still.

Now I have my new phone to play with this weekend!! I hope others in this situation can also find a acceptable resolution.
 
Jeez motofan. That sucks.

I just got off the line with that 331-0500 number and the guy had to transfer me to resolutions. Put on hold for like 9 minutes then it says the extension is invalid and to try again. Call ends...
 
Dudes I went to ATT and got my phone Im stoked :D

At first they told me they could not cancel my preorder (mine is pending shipment ordered 130am PDT 10/7). then I told them yes you can I was told it could be done over the phone (which I hadnt, just thanks to this forum LOL).
So after convincing them otherwise and having the rep on hold for a while they were able to cancel my preorder and give me my new 4s within a few mins of that awesome. almos enough to redeem yourself ATT.. almost lol.. but all in all I do walk away happy

...online pre-order I made 8am eastern on the 7th, which is still backordered. Looks like Premier was the problem for me, even though I received a confirmation email at 8:36am on the 7th saying my order was in and to expect phone on the 14th, for some reason AT&T is showing my order date as the 8th, which pushed me into the second tier, thus the backorder...

Sounds just like my fact pattern.... and still on backorder. I think I'm going to cancel (or reverse...) the preorder, as well. I don't need it today, but the principle remains the same.

Picked up my new phone and random other packages at the UPS depot at 10:30 when customer pickup opened, went shopping, waited for the initial rush of activations to pass, went home, called, had a 10 minute hold time (not bad at all!), activated my new phone on another line than the eligible upgradable line and have finished my restore. YAY! :)
And yup, I did order through AT&T.
 
My order went from Backordered (premier, ordered online on 10/7) to Processing. This looks promising. Thought about visiting the AT&T store, but maybe I can wait...
 
So I too pre-ordered in store on the 7th. My phone is still on back order. I went to the AT&T store and explained the situation. The lady there told me there was no way to cancel my pre order. But, what I can do is return the phone when I get it. Just don't open it. When I pre-ordered it they couldn't port my # because there was no phone, so they just created me a new # and were going to port it when I got mine in the mail. So as long as I don't activate that account, I'm good. I am so glad I called and found out they still have them in stock and was able to get one today! It's worth trying if you know you aren't going to get yours in the next few days!
 
Just got off the phone with CS and I've been told that my order was sent to the warehouse and is in the process of being shipped!

She told me there is an estimated delivery date of tomorrow (sending via FedEx Overnight Saturday delivery).

Since my order was just taken off backorder status, I have confidence this woman speaks TEH TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!:D

Just for the record, the order was placed on 10/17 at 7 am EST (32GB White)
KEEP THE FAITH EVERYONE!
 
Online and with CS online they said my order was back-ordered, which makes sense since I ordered it on the 9th in the afternoon. HOWEVER, when I went to the store to see about canceling my order or whatnot, they said they couldn't as it had already shipped! Awesome... however.... shipped, but no estimated arrival date it seems? Weird but hopeful.

I just went ahead and purchased a iphone4s in the store there though as my current iphone4 is promised to someone to be shipped tomorrow.

When the pre-order finally comes in I should return the one I just bought to the store, no problems.

Shouldn't have pre-ordered it seems, although they were out of white 16gb when I went there... and that's what I am getting. All in all, including the 10 min trip to the store, it took me 35 minutes. Very easy, very helpful, and the iphone 4s is great.
 
Why me??

I preordered my phone from an AT&T store on oct 7, probably at like 2pm and the shipping status still hasn't been updated. I don't know why, even the same AT&T store said it was odd, but no places near me have white iphone 4s 16gb? Is this happening to anyone else??
 
On the phone with ATT customer service right now... They are telling me that since I pre-ordered in-store, I'll have to go back to the store to cancel the pre-order. The problem is, I already went to the store and tried to cancel, and the store told me that they could not cancel my pre-order because it was pending...

I feel like I'm getting the run around.

Well it's past 3pm and still no phone. FedEx said that they are overwhelmed with AT&T orders. Even though my package is out for delivery it may take a while. I guess that's what happens when you live in one of the largest cities.
 
For those who preordered at an ATT store and are in "backordered" status...

If any of you poor souls are stuck in this hell (as I was until about an hour ago), there may be hope for you!

I preordered at my local ATT store on 10/7 at 12:30pm PDT. Salesrep "promised" that I would have it by today "or possibly sooner." I was still holding out hope that my phone would arrive until Wednesday, when my status changed to backordered and stayed that way. No tracking number, just "in process" and "pending shipment."

I called the 800 number this morning to check shipping status. They told me that since I didn't purchase online or over the phone, I had to call the store I preordered from. So I called the store about 9:10am and asked for status. The lady I spoke to said that I would have my phone in 2-3 weeks. I said that was unacceptable as one of their reps promised me I would have it no later than today. It took her a while to find my order, but when she finally did, she said that I could come down to the store, and if they had the model I wanted (16GB black), they would cancel my order, restore my upgrade eligibility immediately, cancel my pending c/c charge and sell me an iPhone from their stock.

Needless to say I hauled butt down there, waited about 15 minutes in line outside (they had a DJ and were giving away cupcakes, bottled water, Monster energy drinks and smoothies), got inside and they took care of business. All told, it took about an hour for me to walk out with my new iPhone, but I consider that time well spent as I'd be waiting another couple weeks minimum if I had just stuck with my preorder.

So if you ordered from an actual ATT store and are in backorder hell, I suggest at least calling them to see if they can do it. The worst they can do is say no, but if they truly want to give excellent customer service (as was the case with my store in Huntington Beach, CA), they will do it.

I am living proof that this is legit. Don't give up hope. Go back to the store and talk to the manager.

However, if your order has moved to "shipped" status, that may be a problem. Mine hadn't and that's why they were able to do it for me.
