A cheaper GoPhone plan is available for $45 per month, or $40 with AutoPay, and includes unlimited talk, text, and up to 6GB of data at a max speed of 3 Mbps. After 6GB, data speeds are slowed to a max of 128 kbps for rest of the 30-day term. Unused data rolls over to the next month. No tethering is included.

Where does it say "No tethering"??

It is not in the linked article.

T-Mobile has been getting slower and slower where I live. These cheap unlimited plans are only going to make it worse. For a regular user, someone who is not watching multiple HD movies per month, service is deteriorating by the day. And the prices are static. I'd like to see some competition at the lower end. Some incentive to use less data and save some money. I'd switch to Project Fi in a heartbeat if they supported iPhones.

There is on T-Mobile - use kickback and any line that uses < 2GB in a month gets a $10 credit for that month. The problem is that you are already paying for unlimited, so either you watch you usage very carefully or you just blow by it. If it was 3GB I'd probably try to use it, but my "normal" usage is around 5GB/month.

Not sure what's so hard for AT&T to understand. I hope they are not paying anyone who is advising these atrocious plans. I bet this is some free advice they are getting to market such plans.

This is from ATT: "If you have a capable smartphone, you can use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot to share your data with other devices."

So... this is tethering, right?

My biggest issue right now with AT&T is these new unlimited plans really do not save you any money and give you more, but more money for slight more options. Went into the AT&T store the other day to look at the plans, and get price points for the new plans, vs what I have now, which includes my corporate discount of 23% off the total bill. To my dismay, the new plans do not give you the corporate discounts anymore, and was going to be $40.00 more than what I am paying for on my old plan. The only difference with my plans was the data, instead of 15GB I would get unlimited or as I like to call it 22GB plan, and for 40.00 more, yeah no. It is my opinion AT&T is trying to phase out any discounts on their phone plans these day. Maybe time to switch after 20 years with them.

To be fair, that all depends on your specidic situation. I pulled the plug yesterday and switched from the 10+ year unlimited grandfather plan to the new Unlimited plan. I have one line and no discounts. For me it was a no brainer. I keep unlimited, add unlimited calls/texts included and add tethering (which I did not have before), all for $90 + tax and fees after the $5 off for autopay.

On my old plan I was paying $99.xx + tax and fees for less features, and as of this month it would have gone up to $104.xx plus tax and fees. So I am saving an easy $15/month and getting more for it.

I am still debating jumping ship to VZ or TMobile for better pricing, but even if I keep AT&T, I am saving money and getting more, so it all depends on your specific situation.

It's not 22 GB per line, it's a 22 GB pool shared by all the lines on your account.

They did honor my AARP 10% discount with the Unlimited Plus Family Plan.

Just switched to T-Mobile after 10 years with AT&T. Been amazing so far.

If you are ok with sharing, in what area do you live? If you live in the SF bay area, can you tell me by city? I have been debating going to TMobile, since it would save me up to $40/month, but I want to make sure I get at least the service that I currently get with AT&T.

Thanks!

Seems like the 22 GB number comes up in the context of being per line.

T-Mobile does have incentives to use less data on unlimited to save money. It's called kickback.

former ATT'er of 8 years and I switched to TMO 3 weeks ago and I LOVE IT...ATT for 2 lines, one grandfathered unlimited, bill was $141 after 20% corporate discount including tax; I now have 4 TMO lines (had 2 of my friends join me) for $140 with taxes included (took advantage of their free line two weeks ago).....and one of my phones won't use 2gb so I will get a kickback making it $130/4 = $32.50 a freaking line!!!! To go from $141 to $65 a month for 2 lines is incredible.....and I even traveled to Montreal this past weekend and used my phone just like I was home on the Telus network (my ATT plan did not include out of US)...ATT has got to be bleeding lines at a faster pace than ever before....

I'm no fan of AT&T but that $40/$45 prepaid plan sounds almost good. 3Mbps is more than I get in the real world where I live and work using T-Mobile with an iPhone 6, so if I actually attained 3Mbps it would be a slight improvement. And my plan now does not include unlimited talk, only unlimited data and texting. I have no use for tethering, especially regarding the slow cellular data speeds I get.

This isn't mac news.

This is mobile phone data plan news.

If I want news about AT&T's latest plan, I'm pretty sure I can sign up for that with them.

If you are like most people who own an iPhone it should be interesting to know which carrier has the best deal. Think about it for a minute or two?

"Throttling Minimum"

I still don't understand why sites are using the term "throttling" since that's not how it works (as the actual post details). Misleading.

I agree. I am at 56 gigs about halfway through my month and no slow down. They do not throttle you. They may, or may no, slow you down if the tower is crowded.

I don't understand why consumers have such a hard on for "unlimited." I'll take a capped plan with no strings attached any day over an unlimited plan with web of restrictions and limits and gimmicks. If you have issues with a capped plan, then set a higher cap. Easy.

Ok. I've used 56 gigs about halfway through my month. Which capped plan do you suggest? I have 3 lines for 100.00 unlimited out the door.

3 Mbps... wow... what is this, 2009?

It's like the all-you-cat-eat lobster buffet restaurant
substituting lobster with krill...

Because some of us are cord-cutters. Not only cord-cutters, but also choose to not have a TV, and watch some things on our mobile devices.

More like simply brining you little pieces of lobster one by one, if we were to make analogous anaglogies.
