What plan are you on? My wife and I are on a family plan as well with me being the primary number. We both bought 3GS's launch day and we share 450 minutes and each have $5 texts. After FAN i'm paying about 120 a month. Yet neither of our lines are eligible. Does anyone else have a similar plan but have their primary as upgrade elegible?

You're not paying nearly enough to get the early upgrade. ATT wants to see ~80-100/month/line to qualify people early. These are high value customers that they don't want leaving.

Let me know what you find out, if anything. Is it possible to use the upgrade of another line on your account by purchasing the device through the Apple Online Store and entering that number, or would that cause activation complications later?

Looks like we're SOL as of now, I explained to the rep every year in the past I've been able to upgrade at "reduced" equipment pricing. I'm not looking to get a full upgrade and I have no problems reupping on a 2 year contract.

She pulled up my account, went through it saw every year that I upgraded at reduced pricing, my account is in good standing, yada, yada..

But ATT has stopped designating every iPhone reduced pricing eligible. The primary number on qualifying family plans are eligible but other lines have to wait the 18-20months to qualify for reduced pricing.

She said she can't change the date, so it'll still be at Feb, and I'll bide my time hope Verizon picks up the iPhone and they release it by Feb and I'll jump to them.. As I said, I'm not expecting a full upgrade, but since the iPhone was released on ATT every year I've been eligible for reduced so it's a tad concerning when ATT is going to stray from a precedent they established..

Can someone tell me what my price might be on the "discounted iphone upgrade at a higher price"?

How can some people be eligible for an upgrade when they purchased the 3GS on day 1 like me and yet im not eligible. I hope this is something AT&T is just slow on changing. This is crap if I can't upgrade

I'm wondering this too. I got my 3GS on launch day and surprisingly, the website says I'm eligible for the full subsidized cost with an $18 upgrade fee. Pretty cool, but I feel unsure about it as so many people are posting different status', despite the fact that we all got it on the same day. I wonder if late bill payments, plan cost, etc. affect this at all? I've always paid on time and have the most expensive possible plan, so I assume AT&T wants to lock customers like me in before their exclusivity ends.

We'll see what happens in 3 hours, but if this new iPhone is really cool (looking for 720p video mostly, and improved build quality), I'll be there to buy one. Unless Apple also announces some really cool new product, then I'll get that and just enjoy OS4 on my 3GS, which I'm still very satisfied with.

Something wrong with AT&T website

Yesterday night after reading the post i went to at&t web and checked my eligibility, my phone was showing discounted prices EX $199 for 32GB 3GS, my wife was not eligible, now im looking again and it shows im not eligible. i have my 3GS may 2009.
Anyone having the same problem???
Thanks

Whoooawhoooo! From November, been bumped up! :)

Same here. I was showing a mid-November upgrade date until today. Sure enough, if I go through AT&T's website and try to upgrade, I see a $299 price for the 32GB iPhone 3GS.

Awesome!

Edit: I should add that I'm on the 450 minute plan with the $5 text option, and my iPhone is the only line on the account. I didn't expect my eligibility date would be "pulled ahead" since I'm not paying very much.

Your plan cost has everything to do with it. Someone who pays more is a high value customer that ATT does not want to lose (plus if someone is already paying $100+/month they are much more likely to jump regardless of the ETF). ATT will give these people perks to keep them around. Basic business really.

So, I can definitely upgrade using my wife's free upgrade, but then she will be locked into another 2 year agreement. My "real" eligible date is 2/20/2011, but I'm def. going to fight for that free upgrade pass.

Just to clarify, you are not locked int for another 2 years on top of your existing contract, you are just reseting the clock.

For example, right now my contract expires Jun 2011 (I can upgrade today, but that isn't the same). If I decide to upgrade today then my contract will expire Jun 2012 (two years from today). In effect, I have only extended my contract for one additional year. However, if I wanted out in Jun 2011 (say a Verizon phone w/ LTE came along) my ETF would only be around $165 after the prorating. I could easily sell my "old" iPhone for that on eBay, so no loss there. (Not saying I would, just "if" I wanted to).

So bottom line, ATT letting people upgrade a year early is a great deal w/o much "cost" on the back end.

Hopefully they'll have a 64GB option :D

I'm hoping too b/c then the 32GB model will get a $100 haircut. I have a 32GB now and have no desire for more storage, but would love to get the next gen for just $199 or less.

I'm eligible to upgrade now and I'm not the master number. A few days ago I wasn't able to until December but now I can.

Bought my 3GS on launch day and I'm happy to see my date was moved up. I think it was previously October or November.

sounds live verizon or sprint is just around the corner and at$t is ******** their pants and wants to lock in as many current customers a possible.

+1 this plus the new ETF is to retain as many customers as possible. For that reason I don't think we'll hear about a VZN phone today. they will wait until AT&T gets some renewals. I also believe that Apple will not release a phone on VZN until it can do voice and data at the same time.[/QUOTE]

Maybe. But I'm betting that, tomorrow (Monday), Steve will announce iPad on Verizon is coming by the end of June and iPhone on Verizon is coming by the end of the year.

We'll see tomorrow.

Mark

I don't think it will be announced today. See post above.

 Really? AT&T doesn't have to offer you a discount. If they offer one before the two year contract ends, it's because you're giving them a lot of money or you're a long time customer.

+1 The whining is really annoying.

This likely means that Jobs won't announce Verizon until later this year or sometime next year. This gives AT&T a chance to hit all the potential jumpers with the contract termination fee. I don't care; I like AT&T's service and haven't had problems with it.

I think you are right.

Who the hell pays more than 100 PER PHONE? Thats F*cking BS and I would NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER pay any where near that per phone. [We have 4 lines btw]

I do. I travel about 35 weeks a year for my job and my company pays my entire bill every month.

You don't HAVE to wait, ATT just wants you to spend $200 more than what you SHOULD pay.

Please explain the SHOULD PAY. If you have a 2 year contract it's clear what the rules are.

where would you guys recommend picking up the phone once it launches? on line order (at&t or apple), at&t store, or apple store? I'm ready to come down with a mysterious case of swine flu to leave work and pick one up once they're available :D

I'll order on line with Apple. It's OK with me if I don't have it day one anyway. I'll sell mine unopened as soon as I get it. I always buy a factory unlocked phone from one of the countries that sells them - usually within a month of launch (depending on when I travel to one). I'll keep using my factory unlocked 3GS till then at which time I'll sell it too. The $$ I get for both phones is more than enough to pay for the factory unlocked phone and make a little too. So far, I've been eligible for an upgrade every year and this has worked out well for me.

I may be it no longer gives me a date... I need to pay my bill though so i won't know until then.

Well the way they are acting, their basic business has become "how can we keep these people from using spectrum we don't have???" so maybe they're combing through their data looking to entice low-usage people to extend their contracts. The less you use, the more attractive you are (and of course if you are a high dollar plan customer despite your low usage, all the better for them). THAT's their basic business now, especially since their biz plan doesn't seem to have involved enough infrastructure upgrade to support demand for the Apple devices they agreed to carry.

For those that are not eligible yet, it's still possible you will be when they go on sale. From some of these posts it looks like ATT is still updating accounts with earlier dates. It's also possible that ATT will do a second round once they see how many renewals they get from this first batch. If I remember correctly they did allow more people to upgrade about a month after launch last year but I might be wrong about that. This approach also helps to manage inventory for the launch.

I sure hope they do some sort of discounted pricing when upgrading from the 3GS like they did going from the 3G

Proof of Verizon iPhone

This is more evidence that the Verizon iPhone is coming later this year. Maybe no mention today, but AT&T is giving up a lot to get people to re-up their two year contracts. That way they will have fewer people jumping ship when the Big Red announcement takes place. There is no other motivation for AT&T to make this offer.
