woo i can upgrade :D

I'm eligible to upgrade, and without the $18 fee, but in the unlikely event that a Verizon iPhone is announced tomorrow I'm still going to jump ship.

Highly unlikely seeing MacRumors already reported that Verizon has stated that there is no immediate plan for a Verizon iPhone.

How can I change which phone that is. I had my account then added my wires phone to our account when we got married 6 years ago but hers is the phone that shows the majority of the bill yet my phone is the master on the account.

I got my iPhone 3GS in August and am getting the message:

"A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 04/14/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer."

Sucks.. I don't want to have to wait that long.

You don't HAVE to wait, ATT just wants you to spend $200 more than what you SHOULD pay.

This move has nothing to do with "being nice" to customers, it's obviously a reaction to the exclusivity agreement coming to an end and they want to keep you for 2 more years rather than lose you to verizon. Same with the new cheaper 3g plans, upgrading to a more afordable plan means 2 more years with AT&T... Because they know that not one of us wants to actually stay on this network.

I'm not falling for it, in less than a year verizon will have full multitasking 4g on their entire giant network, compatible with the new iPhone. I'm hopping over there so I can actually use this thing to make calls ;)

this is just my intuition of course but it makes sense for AT&T to make this move to try and keep it's iPhone customers.

As a valued AT&T customer, you may be eligible for an upgrade on this line, with no-commit equipment pricing and without signing a 2-year commitment. Click 'Upgrade Eligibility' to view your upgrade options.
Any ideas on this, once I click upgrade and choose an iphone 3gs, it gives me the full price. If thats the case, I would rather get the phone commitment free from apple.

activation and sim card
In other words, it's just a BS fee by AT&T. The whole point of SIM cards is that the card itself is your access module, and it's interchangeable. There is zero reason you should have to get a new SIM or "activate" anything for a new phone. You just move your already active SIM from your old phone to your new phone, the end.

As far as this sudden eligibility jump for current subscribers, AT&T did the same thing last year when the iPhone 3GS came out. Just a move to help retain customers. Might be especially poignant with the likeliness that that iPhone will not be an AT&T exclusive after this revision. Gotta let people know they're eligible for an upgrade as soon as it's available so they don't run off to (new carrier that now has iPhone too) and sign with them.

I bought a 3GS on launch for $399.99 and signed a 2 year commitment. Contract is up in June 2011 and eligibility date was 11/20/2010..

As of now they adjusted it and I am eligible TODAY!!!

Here is my plan:

$39.99 450 Monthly Plan
$30.00 iphone Data
$20.00 iPhone Text
-$19.60 FAN Discount
--------
$89.99 Plus Tax Before Fan
$70.39 Plus Tax After Fan

I pay about $78-$80 Per Month after FAN and Taxes

Just giving info to show people the math on my acct.

Call *639#

You'll get a text

I checked last night. I am upgrade eligible :)

Also, I went to the online Apple Store, went partially through the buying process so I could check the price on a 16GB 3GS, and it shows the full discount ($199).

I have a single line and my plan is 450 mins + 200 texts (under $100). I have bought all 3 iPhones on release date so far.

Hmm....

Kinda disappointing. Obviously didn't expect to be able to upgrade tomorrow/this month; but seeing this thread and everyone else becoming eligible is kinda depressing- and it's making me really wonder what the *true* requirements for a bump in the date are.

I bought my 16GB 3GS on launch last summer as an upgrade from my 1st Gen launch unit. $199, obviously.

I'm part of a family plan... typically hovers around $140ish a month for all of us, total (My iPhone, a dumbphone, and a smartphone w/o data).

***

Maybe I'll get some good news tomorrow. I'd sign their stupid 2-yr contract in a second again; which would benefit them. Because God knows if I'm not in a contract when Verizon gets this, I'm jumping ship in a second.

Here's my plan. If I don't become eligible for the Upgrade price I am ditching ATT. There is no reason to stay on their ****y network and Overpay $40. I would much rather switch to Sprint and save $40 and also get more features. Heck, I'll even switch to Verizon...

Meh.

I was about 6th in line at the AT&T kiosk in the mall when the 3G went on sale 2 years ago, so as of July 11 or so, I'm contract-free. But I was working for the state back then, so I get one of those 'business' discounts, and I see:

As a valued AT&T customer, you may be eligible for a standard upgrade on this line, with reduced equipment pricing when signing a 2-year commitment. Click 'Upgrade Eligibility' to view your upgrade options.

MAY be? Excuse me?

And of course the 'Upgrade Eligibility' link sends me to a nice generic page full of all kinds of phones... sigh. I guess I should tell them I don't even work for the state any more. :(

I'm on 450 mins.. and like 1500 texts? My bill is only $81 after tax.. though I have an 18% discount on that from my company..

I bought a 3GS on launch and I'm full eligible to upgrade on day 1.

That's right. It doesn't matter how much you spend as we are seeing in this thread. Lots of people got upgrade eligible. Last summer, I paid $499 for my 3GS and I am thinking that's why I am eligible right now.

Impressed...I think.

I have only been an AT&T iPhone user for two months (literally, just got and paid my second overly expensive bill). I have unlimited data and unlimited voice and everything. I pay approx $150/mo. I've also been included in that $18 upgrade for the next iPhone.

I'm not sure if I'll take it too quickly. While I've heard I wont loose my unlimited data, I want to be 100% sure of that if I do decide to upgrade to the latest/greatest. I also might wait until July as my wife just but an iPad 3G and that's already put a severe dent in our wallet this month...

Either way, I'm impressed with the 3G of the iPhone and the iPad and do not miss at all being jailbroken and using the Edge with T-Mobile (although I miss the LOWER cell phone bill...$215 on T-mobile and that's with 5 phones and 3 of them have unlimited data and all have unlimited text.

Due the math, one AT&T iPhone is very expensive compared to three Google phones on T-Mobile plus two regular cell phones...
