im upgradable but maybe att knows there exclusive deal is up soon so they want to get everyone into a contract. this is y i think they moved everyone up.

Just checked wireless.att.com and compared it to that phone text message you can get calling *NEW#

Text message says $18 activation fee waived.

AT&T Web site says that there is an $18 activation fee on both of my iPhone lines.

Which is right? Leave it up to AT&T, I'm taking a wild guess on which one is right knowing who I am dealing with here.

Mine says as a "valued customer you are eligible for a upgrade with reduced equipment price, when signing a 2 year contract" Full upgrade on 3/01/2011

If I get the new on this summer at a slightly reduced price with a 2 year contract does this void my full upgrade on 3/01/2011?

Funny, I checked on Saturday and it said I wouldn't qualify until 12/14/2010.

Now it says I can upgrade. For what it's worth, I spend about ~105 about after my corporate discount.

Can anyone upgrade by only paying the 18 dollar fee or do we still have to pay 199/299 plus 2y contract.

I'm confused if eligible for an upgrade means a free upgrade or juSt a subsidized one.

You still have to pay for the phone. It is just the "New Person" price.

Personal or Business Customer?

I've had a 3GS since the June of last year and I can't upgrade until March of 2011.

Me too (since launch last year); however, I have a discounted plan through my employer so they have labeled me as a business customer. And I am eligible so perhaps being a business customer has some bearing on this. Also, I was 8 months overdue for an upgrade when I bought mine.

What else may have helped is that there are 2 iPhones on our family plan account. So based on total spent on data they may have applied all the credit to the main line, because the second line is not eligible for upgrade until 2/28/2011.

So not sure but here are the 3 factors that may be playing into this:

1) Business customers get some kind of extra credit.

2) If you previously upgraded early or were due or overdue you may have either lost or gained future early eligibility.

3) Having multiple iPhones on a single account has lead to early upgrade for main line, while other lines lag behind at launch time.

Anybody have any theories if any or all of the above are true. Just curious here why my account is eligible but drummerboy's is not.

Mine was November before and it got moved up as well, ohh yeah. I hope the new iPhone goes on sale tomorrow.

This could mean Verizon or someone else is getting the iPhone in 2011.

Between the increased ETF, and moving people up, they could have a lot of people locked in for a year or ~160 ETF when a Verizon phone might come out.

Smart thinking AT&T.

I really have no idea of how AT&T is calculating eligibility. My account was exactly the same last year this time when I upgraded from 3G to 3GS on launch day. I got the partial discount but my status is still showing 2/20/2011. No idea what's going on.

When I was at the AT&T store yesterday activating an iPhone 3G that i'm using until the new phone comes out... and they seemed to know already when the new iPhone came out. They were like, "Yeah, we don't know when it will be released". It seemed rehearsed.

This move has nothing to do with "being nice" to customers, it's obviously a reaction to the exclusivity agreement coming to an end and they want to keep you for 2 more years rather than lose you to verizon. Same with the new cheaper 3g plans, upgrading to a more afordable plan means 2 more years with AT&T... Because they know that not one of us wants to actually stay on this network.

The second part is not true. Changing your data plan does not extend your contract.

Verizon or anyone else will not get the iPhone before 2011 at the earliest.. so if people want to wait that long with their 3GS then so be it.

same

No luck for me, upgraded to the 3GS on the first day, but I only have the 450 minute plan, plus data.

I did the same thing: bought a 3GS on opening day, and my plan is the same as yours. I am eligible for the upgrade.

However, I think the reason I AM and you're not, is because I got a 3G on opening the day the year before, and when I got the 3GS, it cost $400 with a new 2yr contract.

Well, I did the exact same thing that you did (got a 3G a day after opening, then early upgraded to the 3GS for $400), yet I am (so far) not eligible :)

sweeeeet all 3 of my lines are eligible, last year (even tho a family plan) only one (mine) was eligible. I paid 299 for a 32 gig, and like 399 or 499 for a 16. Just added a new line less than a year ago and that one is eligible also

Sorry for the bad news but ATT usually only allows the "master number" to be eligible first... the rest of the numbers follow the normal upgrade time line...and they base it all on how much you spend each month.

Not on this time around. All three of my lines are good to go according to the web site.

I bought the 3G on lauch and the 3GS at launch and I'm eligible for upgrade. Something tells me.... IT's A TARP!

Are you a person still on a legacy $20 data plan and on a 450 min plan as well? From all the posts I have read, in this thread and others it looks like this might be the tipping point. One has to spend X amount monthly reoccurring, not have upgraded too soon and also be on the higher data plan to bumped up with their dates.

For some of the people that are showing the 699/599, make sure your cellphone bill is paid. If you have a current balance right now, it'll probably show the 699/599, but after you pay it, it'll show 499/399 or 299/199.

You can go to the Apple website for exact pricing.

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone

I have my bill on autopay and haven't missed a payment in the 6+ years I've been with AT&T. It's giving me a date of Nov 24 for the early pricing (399/499). I last upgraded in mid June 2009. Maybe I should call....

Nope. I had an original iPhone, bought on launch day 2007. Did not upgrade to the 3G. Did do a subsidized upgrade to the 3GS (32GB). I'm on the bottom rung voice plan + $5 text message plan.

Originally my "upgrade eligible" date was the end of Nov, 2010. As of last night it was immediately.

That's not always the case. My line was upgrade eligible on 6/20/10 and is now eligible today. My wife's line wasn't upgrade eligible until 10/24/10 and is eligible today as well. The two other lines my parents are on haven't changed but they do not use iPhones.
