I'm just curious, why get it next month? I'm also still on the original 2G iPhone the day it came out and since I waited this long, am waiting for the next new iPhone 4X or 5. Why would you upgrade next month when your so close to the annual refresh?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have dropped 5 calls so far today. And not all in the same place - in 5 different locations over a span of miles, entirely within a densely populated area, and mostly within 1 mile of a major freeway.

AT&T would have to drop the price low enough for me to just keep it as a secondary line for me to stay on one minute longer than necessary.

I can believe this. AT&T does stuff like this. One time my friend had AT&T home internet service and her router went out, she called them and wanted her to buy a new one. I told her to push them for a new one, and sure enough they sent her a new one for free.

My transfer back to unlimited for $30 a month was a SUCCESS. I used facts to get mine back.

Fact 1: The current phone number was originally on the iPhone2 unlimited plan and just changed it when the new plan was released.

Fact 2: Selected the 2GB plan for $25 but have gone over it multiple times by about 200mb and ended up having to pay the extra $25 for additional 2GB that I only used a small portion of.

Fact 3: Pointed out that I had never exceeded 4GB of usage.

They researched my facts and validated that everything I had stated was true and switched me back to the unlimited data plan.

I started out the conversation with: Hello, I just recently heard that Verizon was going to offer iPhone owners an unlimited data plan for $30 a month and that because I keep going over my limit and cant switch back to the unlimited that I was going to take both of my iPhones and move to Verizon unless something could be done to allow me back on the unlimited data plan.

The rest is history. Note that I could not get both switched over because the other number (wifes) had never exceeded 2GB and the number had never been associated with the original unlimited plan.

Hope this helps some of you...GOOD LUCK!:D

UPDATE: Was told to reboot my iPhone after 15 min...did it, logged into my account and sure enough, I am now back on "Data Plan for iPhone" $30.00 LOVING life again, do not have to manage my data anymore...was a stupid move to change in first place but though I would save money...NOT

I would find this hysterical if it weren't so sad.

In NYC, you can't check your email. Heck, in Penn Station during rush hour, you can't even send a simple SMS. (I know, redundant, but my point is that it's just short letters -- not emoji or hanzi or kangji or anything tough.)

Saying that AT&T's data plan is "unlimited" is like paying for an all-you-can-eat buffet in North Korea: there just isn't enough to go around, so you're getting shafted either way.

AT&T says that you can't use data and talk on the phone at the same time with Verizon? No problem -- I'll stick with AT&T, where I can have them drop my call while not loading my email all at once.

AT&T has NEVER, EVER had enough bandwidth to properly run the iPhone in NYC. They've always known it, and they couldn't give a rat's butt.

Edit:

^This.

You can add MI to that list. In the last year, my data has worked fast about 2 weeks. Most of the time when I call and complain I get a tower is half down, or we are working on it.

Takes me about 30-40 seconds at times to send a 1 sentence email.

Can't win.

But- My bill arrives on time, every single month-

My issue is calls not going through and delayed voice call notification.

Call and ask for a partial bill forgiveness.

i wonder what percentage of people who have the unlimited data plan actually use more then 2GB a month on a regular basis. at&t should just offer the unlimited plan to everyone.

Unlimited + Tethering? Not for me...

I'm grandfathered in to unlimited, thought I would use this opportunity to see if they would allow me to add tethering without giving it up. Said I would be switching to VZ for the extra $20/mo hotspot feature if they couldn't offer me something.

NOPE.

Anybody had any luck with this yet? Obviously less likely since they may not even have a data plan that looks like this...

(for those who wonder how you'd go over 2GB its easy... just stream lots of daily podcasts and use SlingPlayer to watch video while you're traveling)

You can get free tethering by using mywi app from cydia... But you have to jailbreak your phone which is easy enough jailbreakme.com or redsn0w.com :))

it has been unlimited since the ipad came out.. they just didnt tell anyone unless you called and asked.

I havent read the whole thread yet but I called today trying to get my girlfriends line upgraded to unlimited cause she keeps coming close to the 2gb cap. I still have my grandfathered unlimited plan. rep wouldnt budge but she did make it obvious she was highlighting the fact that my girlfriends line never had it to begin with. So I think ATT is just letting people who once had it go back.

I wouldn't mind getting one installed in my backyard, literally. Yet somehow I am sure I'd still drop a call.

My Aunt that lives about a mile and a half away from me, has a tower on her property and AT&T pays them monthly just to have the tower there, plus their cell phone bill. They are also putting another tower less then a half a mile away on another piece of our farm. At home I am getting pretty fast downloading now. I hope to get better in the near future!

What about for those who have tethering? I have tethering, but i'd like to go to unlimited w/ tethering... no go?

That's a good point. I've pay for that, for legitimate use. But dropping down my data plan the adding tethering seemed ridiculous.

I've actually thought we had some legal action. I bought an unlimited data plan, expecting teathering, but when we got tethering, I lost my unlimited data.

Just had the same result with the same situation (FAN number from previous employer). The rep I talked to put me on hold for a few minutes to check with someone else to see if it was possible to add unlimited back on, but they apparently concluded that their system would not allow them to do so.

Oh well.

Same here. Called about an hour ago. No dice. :(

Maybe it only works for those claiming they're going to switch to Verizon, and not to those who ask nicely.

?

I had unlimited data since I got my first iphone.
at the end of November I broke my 3GS twice.
I started using my original iphone(2G) - when I dropped from the 3gs to the old iphone they said the unlimited data plan was not available on that phone- so they downgraded me to the 2GB data plan-
I lost the phone 3 days later so i finally caved and bought the iphone4.
I called then up when I activated and they switched me back to the unlimited data plan without a problem- they said it was because I already had it so they could just add it back.
this was in December- well before the verizon announcement. so they have been doing it for a while....

called in to get unlimited on news iphone added.. denied.

have 3 iphones with unlimited and 1 iphone on 2gb cap. guy wouldnt budge.. went to next tier of CS. he claimed he couldnt add it since i never had it to begin with. said ok id like to cancel my lines send me a final bill, he asked why i repeated it time and time over. said im getting 4 iphones on vzw he offered/applied $60 credit to bill. i said why dont you apply a $586 credit to my bill so that it covers my etf? he paused, i said im serious. all this could be avoided if you would just add unlimited to my 1 line. needless to say i was unsucessful on that.

Free refurbished plastic box of **** ATT are idiots easily exploitable if you have a brain cell. Almost a free ride for me as it is, and gonna get mine one way or another until they give me unlimited... Then I won't have any way to ass rape them out of services thereafter except perhaps on tethering costs and "dropped calls" which I do get a few of honestly... Prob 1 out of 6 calls :( :))

It is very important to understand that this seems to ONLY be working if the phone number you are using was ORIGINALLY on the unlimited plan. If you opened up your account and have only ever been on the 2GB or 200MB then you are SOL.

I got one changed, and one denied. I had one on old unlimited and one not.

Simple

Thats outright bs... You let yourself get hosed that time. I really dont get why they are so determined to not offer unlimited... Tight ass beyotches

So far no luck in getting my Unlimited back. The second rep I spoke too was so heartless and uncaring it made me want to cancel right then and there on the phone....but then again where else am I going to go?

I was very polite and in fact mentioned that I have always liked AT&T and do not have a dropped call problem in my area, we have very good coverage. He put me on hold for 5 minutes and told me that there was NO WAY they could get me my Unlimited back because I switched to 2GB w/ tethering so long ago. I've been an iPhone customer since day 1 and have always paid my bills on time, etc. They did not care at all....this is a joke. The call made me start to hate AT&T now, I think I will be bailing for Verizon now on both of my lines.

I am assuming you directed this at me and I did NOT get hosed. I set out to get my phone on unlimited and leave my wifes where it was because she has NEVER gone over 1gb so why pay more. She is not jailbroken, doesnt stream and only uses facebook.

Please read my original post further up on how I described my experience before you start insulting people.

I am trying to be helpful and do not ask for this type of feedback.

Thank You

switch

Does anyone know if I could keep my unlimited plan if I upgrade from a 3GS to the future iPhone 5? I know it's way too early to know for sure, but it's just a question :p

Just switch your data plan now. Neither ATT nor Verizon are offering this unlimited data for long (reread the post). Verizon is offering it to pull away those "grandfathered in" on the unlimited data, and ATT is offering it under the table to those who had it and want it back (versus going to Verizon to get it).

If you switch now you'll be grandfathered in when they pull it, and switching to an iPhone 5 shouldn't change that.

They gave in only because you have'nt gone over 4 gigs and your number is not hung up in their system as being ineligible. By saying you'll take your phones elsewhere (to verizon) is empty bcause tgeir system and phones are CDMA and all iPhones to date (pre verizon) are not. I will call verizon to see if it is possible to switch without buying a new phone thoigh... If anything just ti get some practice for sticking it to ATT any way I can when my bill comes in a few days :)p :))

Gonna start trying to pay my bill as late as possible to try to find more leverage... Abything to cost them for not otherwise giving in... I'll get max value out if them any way possible. F--- ATT :))

Wow...you got it all! Of COURSE YOU CAN NOT take GSM phones to a CDMA phone company, anyone with common sense knows this. I told them I was going to SWITCH to Verizon which means that I would have to buy new phones. And yes, it did influence them because the first time she came back it was...we do not have any special offers or intent to go back to this plan. When I reiterated that I was going to CLOSE my account and switch to Verizon, she went back to her supervisor again and the rest is history.

You are just being antagonistic and based on your postings, and if I were an AT&T rep...I would not switch you back either.
