Ive read this thread and have exploited enough weaklings at ATT to have a pretty good sense that the "system" is set to only be enabled to offer it to those who fall within the "grandfather" time parameters. I couldbe mistaken and will pound their table relentlessly regardless, but based on prior experience that seems very probable... Until they are FORCED to change, which probably isn't quite just yet. Keep the pressure ON though, and it will happen sooner!!!

Still the same original phone number??? Bet it is the initial one...

I'm always curious in what ways people are using their phones that they are going over 2gb a month. I use my phone quite a bit, but rarely am I in situations where I'm going to to stream an entire movie over 3g. I don't think I've ever gone over 300mb in a single month, and generally however around the 200mb mark.

I watch a 2 hour netflix movie in bed every night. I'm not sure if those are downscaled to iphone, but I'd guess they're half a gig each AT LEAST. That's 10-20 gigs a month right there.

Anyone listen to pandora all day? Anyone use Skype? You know Skype works just fine over 3G on a 3Gs (yes I know the camera faces the wrong way). I also can use text free phone over 3G even though it says it doesn't.

Yes I have wifi in the house, but guess what? My trusty 3Gs's GPS and Wifi antenna have died.

System wont allow it... Theyll give it up any other way... They just cant yet... Keep pressuring and it willhappen sooner than layer. Great tip to get some free credit though!

You got hosed for not standing your ground until you got what you want or an equal consideration! Your point is probably entirely accurate though in terms of certain numbers cannot be switched systemically.

I'm willing to bet 98 percent of iPhone users don't care. Why? Because 98 percent of us don't use 2GB of data per month. If you go over that, it's definitely a steal at $30. With the problems evolving over wireless data networks with "unlimited" data, I really wish unlimited would go away and more pricing tiers could be given. Maybe give a 5GB or even 10GB plan for $40. I think that would literally cover almost every user imaginable unless they have no WiFi at home and stream Netflix 24/7.

We have WiFi at work now, so I don't exactly use much 3G data anymore. The only big hit I used to take was downloading a 10MB podcast daily before I left. However I just got my latest bill and somehow used 125MB on a single day when I was on a trip. I'm guessing that I must've streamed a movie to my phone that day or night because that's usually my usage over two weeks. Anyway, I may switch to the $15 plan if my normal usage drops way below 200MB.

My home is in a coverage hole that barely gets EDGE but is surrounded by 3G. Verizon's 4G coverage comes to within a mile of my home, so maybe a tower will be added when AT&T expands its 4G network.

I'm grandfathered in to unlimited, thought I would use this opportunity to see if they would allow me to add tethering without giving it up. Said I would be switching to VZ for the extra $20/mo hotspot feature if they couldn't offer me something.

NOPE.

This is what I was wondering about. It seems like for $50 you'll get unlimited data and at least 2GB tethering. AT&T should really match that for their longtime customers.

I've got the grandfathered unlimited plan, and I'd be fine if for $20 I could add 2GB of tethering. Verizon's network isn't nearly as fast as AT&T's (I regularly get 5-6 Mbps on my iPhone 4 around town) but their coverage is so much better. Not sure what the right thing to do is. I'm thinking jailbreak + commcenter hack :)

Fuddy duddy:p

I just called and did this after dropping to the 2GB plan in August. Two weeks ago, they dismissed my request outright. Now? Not-so-much.

Free market, baby!

Plus, do you really want that nerdy Verizon guy and all those people he hangs with following you around everywhere?

You're a bit out of date :)

The roving test guy isn't used any more (thank goodness).

They've switched to a "Rule the Air" theme with a 1930s retro-modern RKO style antenna, and concentric wave rings in photos.

I figured AT&T would have to open up unlimited to long time customers. I used the 2G iPhone trick as I left AT&T ages ago, but returned for iPhone.

Just curious if any new customers who were forced to sign up for a 2GB plan was able to get unlimited?

Called this afternoon to try and get unlimited back and it was a no go.

The past 2 months I have been over my cap. Regret ever dropping the unlimited right before the dropping of unlimited altogether.

funny how att is doing things after the fact - they should have strategized better long ago

You can't get out of your contract because the government imposed taxes went up on your last bill.

They just increased the govt. taxes a few pennies on my last bill, so theoretically I could get out of it easy. This means other users bills should/will have gone up too.

$40/m for all that? Are you trying to be funny or do you actually think that's even possible? How clueless!

Dear AT&T, Verizon & Others:

Offer a plan that has it all unlimited for an affordable rate (~ $40/mo) and we'll use it.
-voice
-text
-data
-tethering
-hotspot

Sooooo tired of this BS from the phone companies. Quit nickel & diming us - just give us the plans we want. The phone can do all these things, why not let it?

I told them I was going to SWITCH to Verizon which means that I would have to buy new phones.

Your going to switch to a CDMA - NON data & Voice at the same time NON-GSM phone, NON-Unlockable phone and just generally awful phone..

I was able to achieve my goals using this news post by MacRumors. I figured I would give it a try. Dont be so quick to critisize...I am jailbroke and would never, ever give up my freedom. My mistake was in thinkin I would save money by movin to the 2GB, but I have recovered.

Think of all the Verizon users that will be posting here sooner then later so use your head and realize that even if someone leaves AT&T for Verizon does not meant they will be leaving MacRumors.

I think you should review the pros and cons of GSM vs CDMA. You can't just pick one or two advantages for GSM and assume its better. Both have their advantages and neither is better by a wide margin. I don't care what measure you use.

Im surprised people are having this much difficulty. As I mentioned in another post, I payed an etf to get out of Att back in July of 2010 after having every iPhone from the original through the 3GS. After being on Verizon for 6 months and having a Droid X I cracked and went back to Att and purchased an iPhone 4. I am still within the 30 days to return it and I obviously mentioned that and told them that I used to have the unlimited plan on my previous 3 iPhones with the same phone number since I ported it back and forth. Not sure if they switched it since I could switch to Verizon with no etf or if it was because my phone number used to have the unlimited, either way they didnt give me any kind of hassle. I power cycled my phone as instructed, then went on Att and checked and it had been switched over to the unlimited plan.

"In an unadvertised loophole, AT&T Inc. has allowed subscribers who have had an unlimited data plan in the past to switch back. That includes anyone who had an iPhone before June, when the limited plans took effect."

This shows exactly whats its all about.....some (ahum most) companies just don't give a shizz about there customers. They only change when it effects their wallets which are already exploding with millions of dirty money earned with monopoly strategies.

If you can give AT&T the finger then you should.
Give other companies the change and let the market grow, creating a much healthier business with better customer support and less monopoly games that screw everybody.
Do not get sucked into these contracts with these mayor companies over and over again.

Also Apple kept her mouth shut when AT&T switched contracts.
The unlimited plan was promised by Steve if I remembered correctly.
I think Apple should've been be very pissed at that time but I'll guess they only looked at what was best for sales.:apple:

Customer Care says "NOPE"

I just called in to ATT Wireless Customer Care and mentioned this article and the AP report and they said they had no such knowledge and nothing has changed. I HAD unlimited and stupidly let it go.

I requested to be put back on the unlimited plan and was willing to pay the extra $5 a month but they said "Sorry, we don't know anything about this."

Hmmmm.

Wonder how long it will take to become policy.

Has anyone else called in and successfully had them switch you back?

TIA,

SAS
