Really? You're going to skip out on the best smartphone out there because of this one app? Really? OK, your loss.

You're missing the point. YouTube already has movies and TV shows. They will get more within the coming year. What happens then? Hulu is coming witheir app. What happens then?

AT&T is essentially saying that they will block any video streaming apps. If a smartphone can't stream video, then it is pretty close to being useless in this day & age. Especially when the iPhone is marketed as a multimedia device.

Working great on 3G for me

...thank you VoIPover3G!

This post is a good poster for the over-the-line whining on this thread, rivaling the I PAID $600 FOR MY IPHONE AND THEY DROPPED THE PRICE! crowd.

You pay $80 for a line with data, then "about" $40 more (it's $30 for everybody who can do it now) for tethering and about $40 (nobody knows) for some mythical MacBook that doesn't exist yet. Stopping at this insanity, you're out $160, which isn't even close to the $300 rant. I already pointed out that you're $30 off for tethering, and as I said nobody knows about this MacBook with built-in 3G that doesn't exist.

OK, let's also examine another thing. You're going to have a MacBook and an iPhone, which you will use to tether for a network connection. Then you're going to buy a new computer and ALSO pay for another 3G connection? You're going to pay for two 3G connections (built-in on the notebook that doesn't exist and iPhone tethering) on one computer. Really? Seriously?

Most likely if you want to do this, you'll be out $140. The iPhone stuff actually runs $70 plus taxes, which are $5 for me. But we'll call it $80. The 3G plans you can get with an add-on card or dongle cost $60. That's $140, not $300.

Lastly, you are really going to call it legal robbery? What's next, dry water?

Ok, let me sum this up REAL quick. Why do people like you only come here to argue? We all come here to express our thoughts on specific issues correct? If you want to express your counter thoughts to someone's comment, first do it with a little bit of tact, second, make your points valid. First of all, if you read my post properly, you would have noticed that I CLEARLY stated that I was joking about the pricing and was obviously exaggerating some. Second of all, a thing can be in more than one state of being at a time, hence legal robbery, in other words robbery legalized? Meaning, following the guidelines of something just enough to stay in the clear but abusing it just the same??? Case in point, choose your battles. In this case there is no need, what's the point? I simply stated something that doesn't require any type of correction. It is my opinion after dealing with the company. If you would like to continue to use AT&T's service and you think it is so great, feel free. I certainly am not stopping you. There are other posters on here that love AT&T for some reason, but I don't see anyone going crazy. They just simply state their own ideas about the situation and yes it is a situation, when you have to pay for every little thing that a device offers. But like I said feel free no one is stopping you. Take care man, you seem really upset.:apple:

I'd say that within 72 hours there will be a mock AT&T commercial on YouTube that highlights an iPhone user trying to use the SlingPlayer over the AT&T 3G network <fails> while another user running Verizon is happily watching Comedy Central's Daily Show.

The tag line will be, "AT&T, the nation's fastest 3G network...unless you actually try to use it."

Wouldnt even have to be a Verizon customer. It could just be another ATT customer with a Blackberry running sling over 3G

Not to mention, you do not know me or what my need for something may be. Stop generalizing. There are plenty of reasons why one may need both, why be so close minded?

Most anticipated

Wow.

The one application that I've been waiting for is now out, and I don't even want it. SLING YOU SUCK!

Ok lets see: over 2 years ago, I had a windows mobile Motorola Q on Verizon Wireless. I had sling player on there and I used to stream the NHL playoffs to my phone. It was great.

Now, I've been eagerly waiting for that 1 stupid feature to make it to the most advanced phone on the market for A LONG TIME. I was willing to overlook the ridiculously long wait time, the freakin' app should have been one of the first to make it into the app store.

So I'll discount that gripe, since it finally did come out (wow congrats SLING)... but

1) Its not backwards compatible with the older sling boxes??? Are you kidding me, YOU HAD SLING MOBILE SOFTWARE THAT WAS COMPATIBLE WITH MY SLING BOX YEARS AGO, now you've gone and written Iphone software that CAN'T connect to my slingbox???

2) ITS $30????? Are you ***** kidding me? A $30 app that requires a PROPRIETARY HARDWARE FROM THE SAME COMPANY? Sling, I'm already a loyal customer you don't have to gauge me. Its not necessary at all!! Its actually rude. Your windows mobile versions are free if I recall.

3) Its Wifi only??? As a person that travels with his Macbook Air most of the time, which by the way has FREE SLING BOX software why in the world would I pay $30 to watch over wifi with my iphone. I want SLING for Iphone so that I can watch when I'm on the road away from the Wifi that my computer needs in order to use SLING BOX!!!

4) Its less mac compatible than PC compatible??? Did you forget who makes the phone you just wrote the software for??? (Sling's website recommends using a PC for configuration prior to using your iPhone)

Your business model is broken.

Why would anyone PAY EXTRA for a version of your software that doesn't work when you don't have wifi, has less features than your free blackberry, windows mobile and laptop versions AND is less compatible with your older hardware.

I hope you go out of business after this crazy stunt. I'm never buying another one of your products again.

They all have 30-Free Trials but all their version are $30.

ATT should commit HARIKIRI

I think the only honorable way out for ATT is to commit harikiri and just die. BAHHH!HH!!H!H!H!H:mad: I am so disgusted with ATT. Thank god I have my iPhone 3G on T-Mobile USA. I feel for all of you who have to deal with ATT BS. Of course, my data speeds are not what they could be but dealing with a decent company (and only paying 6 bucks a month for unlimited data) make it totally worth it.

Im waiting for at&ts statement about the millions of other phones on their network using slingbox....

Stilll waiting....

For real! That statement is such BS it is absolutely ridiculous!

Now just wait for them to promote their Uverse thing.

without reading this thread..
2 things,

ATT cannot support a phone that has the capability to bring an all in one unit, but they still want rights to it?

they say an iphone isnt a phone.... so i assume my blackberry isnt a phone either.

This isnt a good thing for Apple either.

i guess no iphone for me once again, I'll just stick to my itouch and blackberry for the next 1 or 2 generations then....who knows maybe longer.

They must separate content providers from network providers. Period. There is too much conflict of interest here. Time to bust this **** up!

that, my friend, is the best comment here. Network providers should not be allowed to also operate as content providers.

Also- a network provider should not be allowed to not guarantee any minimum speed and then restrict the content of what goes on their network- one or the other- either say we have to maintain a minimum speed and guarantee it or let people do what they want.

This is the #1 reason also why it should be illegal for networks to have exclusivity on individual devices.

I smell a class action lawsuit someday...

Sure. Apple has nothing to do with it. And President Obama didn't know they were going to fly Air Force One low over New York... Yeah, sure.... Whatever.

I don't know for a fact that Apple had any say, but from what I have read of their influence and their "ground breaking" contract with AT&T, plus the fact that AT&T has recently been trying to extend their exclusivity contract for the iPhone, I HAVE to believe that Apple has the power to say no to this. They need to man up and DO THAT!

It isn't just about this one app, it is about basic unfairness. Let me count the ways:
1. AT&T already caps the bandwidth at 5GB/Month anyway, so WTH is up?
2. If you own another phone on AT&Ts network you get to use SlingPlayer.
3. YouTube, iTunes, HULU, etc. are all fine, but if a little guy like me without much clout wants to occasionally watch a little TV from my house, I can't because it will somehow clog up their frikkin network. If I were big and powerful like the networks, etc. I might could do something about it.
4. If you use one of AT&Ts data plans with a USB device on your laptop you can use SlingBox. Is that a computer? Yes. Hmmm. Their excuses are getting more and more lame.
5. This information was released over a month ago and AT&T quickly denied it and retracted it. Now it s back. So, they are admitting that they LIED before.

Unless and until these issues are laid to rest, I hope AT&T offices, stores, and telephone lines are besieged by customers ready to cancel their service. Vote with your wallet, people. They will change their ways under pressure. I want the iPhone to succeed because it is a well-thought out device that I like using (iPod Touch actually, but you know what I mean) Fix the iPhones network and I will buy one.

WTF does have to do with Obama? Go away!

I agree. I would also say since they consider the iPhone a computer, I should be allowed to just purchase a data plan. I'll be more than happy to use Skype than their overpriced cell plans.

Palm Pre's Opportunity!

Let me preface this by saying I haven't read every post. So, if this was mentioned earlier, excuse the post.

To me, this seems like a great opportunity for the Pre and Sprint to gain customers. If they offer it and allow edge and 3g, then maybe, they will take more customers away from ATT.

Then, possibly, ATT (and Apple!) will change their tune?!

Just jailbreak it...

It's not fair on non-US people with non-unlimited data accounts without these restrictions...

Are we sure of the statements source?

That supposed statement from AT&T sounds a little suspicious to me (i.e. are we certain that it is an official announcement from AT&T?). For one, it's badly written and although AT&T seems to have a history of putting its foot in its mouth this time around I've got to wonder whether we might just be falling for a practical joke created to stir up controversy. I'm not claiming that Engadget is the perpetrator, just that they may have also been pranked.

The parts that are oddly written include:
The application does not run on our 3G wireless network.

that's just plain awkward even when read it its full context, and

But what our terms and conditions prohibit is the transferring, or slinging, of a TV signal to their personal computer or smartphone.
With my emphasis on the term "slinging." What are they trying to promote here, Sling Media's own terminology?

I'm not suggesting that AT&T didn't play some role in restricting the SlingPlayer to WiFi. I'm just wondering whether this statement really originated at AT&T.

I agree 100 percent. Whether or not we ever see one is another question, but there is certainly a lawsuit here...on more than one grounds.

That was going to be my point.

I'm in the UK on O2 and because ATT can't cope we have to suffer too????

Hardly what I'd call fair

As excited as I am about this app, even with its limitations, I can't believe that AT&T actually said that this app was not allowed to work on their network. Slingplayer runs on every other "Smart Phone/Computer" or what ever they want to call it.

I think I will have to write an email and possible call AT&T do voice my displeasure over their decision. Hopefully they will continue to roll out their next generation data service and allow Slingplayer to work at that time if not sooner.

And im sure o2 network could easily cope with it as well.

Bought the app before going on macrumors this morning. fail.
