Really? You're going to skip out on the best smartphone out there because of this one app? Really? OK, your loss.
This post is a good poster for the over-the-line whining on this thread, rivaling the I PAID $600 FOR MY IPHONE AND THEY DROPPED THE PRICE! crowd.
You pay $80 for a line with data, then "about" $40 more (it's $30 for everybody who can do it now) for tethering and about $40 (nobody knows) for some mythical MacBook that doesn't exist yet. Stopping at this insanity, you're out $160, which isn't even close to the $300 rant. I already pointed out that you're $30 off for tethering, and as I said nobody knows about this MacBook with built-in 3G that doesn't exist.
OK, let's also examine another thing. You're going to have a MacBook and an iPhone, which you will use to tether for a network connection. Then you're going to buy a new computer and ALSO pay for another 3G connection? You're going to pay for two 3G connections (built-in on the notebook that doesn't exist and iPhone tethering) on one computer. Really? Seriously?
Most likely if you want to do this, you'll be out $140. The iPhone stuff actually runs $70 plus taxes, which are $5 for me. But we'll call it $80. The 3G plans you can get with an add-on card or dongle cost $60. That's $140, not $300.
Lastly, you are really going to call it legal robbery? What's next, dry water?
I'd say that within 72 hours there will be a mock AT&T commercial on YouTube that highlights an iPhone user trying to use the SlingPlayer over the AT&T 3G network <fails> while another user running Verizon is happily watching Comedy Central's Daily Show.
The tag line will be, "AT&T, the nation's fastest 3G network...unless you actually try to use it."
Wow.
The one application that I've been waiting for is now out, and I don't even want it. SLING YOU SUCK!
Ok lets see: over 2 years ago, I had a windows mobile Motorola Q on Verizon Wireless. I had sling player on there and I used to stream the NHL playoffs to my phone. It was great.
Now, I've been eagerly waiting for that 1 stupid feature to make it to the most advanced phone on the market for A LONG TIME. I was willing to overlook the ridiculously long wait time, the freakin' app should have been one of the first to make it into the app store.
So I'll discount that gripe, since it finally did come out (wow congrats SLING)... but
1) Its not backwards compatible with the older sling boxes??? Are you kidding me, YOU HAD SLING MOBILE SOFTWARE THAT WAS COMPATIBLE WITH MY SLING BOX YEARS AGO, now you've gone and written Iphone software that CAN'T connect to my slingbox???
2) ITS $30????? Are you ***** kidding me? A $30 app that requires a PROPRIETARY HARDWARE FROM THE SAME COMPANY? Sling, I'm already a loyal customer you don't have to gauge me. Its not necessary at all!! Its actually rude. Your windows mobile versions are free if I recall.
3) Its Wifi only??? As a person that travels with his Macbook Air most of the time, which by the way has FREE SLING BOX software why in the world would I pay $30 to watch over wifi with my iphone. I want SLING for Iphone so that I can watch when I'm on the road away from the Wifi that my computer needs in order to use SLING BOX!!!
4) Its less mac compatible than PC compatible??? Did you forget who makes the phone you just wrote the software for??? (Sling's website recommends using a PC for configuration prior to using your iPhone)
Your business model is broken.
Why would anyone PAY EXTRA for a version of your software that doesn't work when you don't have wifi, has less features than your free blackberry, windows mobile and laptop versions AND is less compatible with your older hardware.
I hope you go out of business after this crazy stunt. I'm never buying another one of your products again.
Im waiting for at&ts statement about the millions of other phones on their network using slingbox....
Stilll waiting....
They must separate content providers from network providers. Period. There is too much conflict of interest here. Time to bust this **** up!
Sure. Apple has nothing to do with it. And President Obama didn't know they were going to fly Air Force One low over New York... Yeah, sure.... Whatever.
I don't know for a fact that Apple had any say, but from what I have read of their influence and their "ground breaking" contract with AT&T, plus the fact that AT&T has recently been trying to extend their exclusivity contract for the iPhone, I HAVE to believe that Apple has the power to say no to this. They need to man up and DO THAT!
It isn't just about this one app, it is about basic unfairness. Let me count the ways:
1. AT&T already caps the bandwidth at 5GB/Month anyway, so WTH is up?
2. If you own another phone on AT&Ts network you get to use SlingPlayer.
3. YouTube, iTunes, HULU, etc. are all fine, but if a little guy like me without much clout wants to occasionally watch a little TV from my house, I can't because it will somehow clog up their frikkin network. If I were big and powerful like the networks, etc. I might could do something about it.
4. If you use one of AT&Ts data plans with a USB device on your laptop you can use SlingBox. Is that a computer? Yes. Hmmm. Their excuses are getting more and more lame.
5. This information was released over a month ago and AT&T quickly denied it and retracted it. Now it s back. So, they are admitting that they LIED before.
Unless and until these issues are laid to rest, I hope AT&T offices, stores, and telephone lines are besieged by customers ready to cancel their service. Vote with your wallet, people. They will change their ways under pressure. I want the iPhone to succeed because it is a well-thought out device that I like using (iPod Touch actually, but you know what I mean) Fix the iPhones network and I will buy one.

...thank you VoIPover3G!
UPDATE: I added instructions here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/7606647/
that, my friend, is the best comment here. Network providers should not be allowed to also operate as content providers.
Also- a network provider should not be allowed to not guarantee any minimum speed and then restrict the content of what goes on their network- one or the other- either say we have to maintain a minimum speed and guarantee it or let people do what they want.
This is the #1 reason also why it should be illegal for networks to have exclusivity on individual devices.
I smell a class action lawsuit someday...
The application does not run on our 3G wireless network.
With my emphasis on the term "slinging." What are they trying to promote here, Sling Media's own terminology? But what our terms and conditions prohibit is the transferring, or slinging, of a TV signal to their personal computer or smartphone.

Blocked using 3G in the UK too
That was going to be my point.
I'm in the UK on O2 and because ATT can't cope we have to suffer too????
Hardly what I'd call fair![]()
