Yes it is gone till it comes back. So if i have $1200 in my account, I only have $100 to spend till it comes back. You know banks, could take a week. I’m just saying I couldn’t afford not having that for a week...

But what he can do is as soon as they put a hold on it, call bank and tell them to release it and they will.
That sounds like a debit card, not a credit card. What's the credit limit of a typical credit card user? Most of my cards have limits around $30,000.

The thing is, I’ve been considering a switch to ATT, because our TMO reception has been getting worse. But if they pull stuff like this...

AT&T should be able to swap it out without a restocking fee. Restocking fees are charged whenever you don’t like the phone or something like that. If you are within 14 days you should be able to swap it out if it’s defective. After that you have to go through apple. Do you think maybe they didn’t understand what you were trying to do?

They also raise admin fees randomly. If reception is better with them it may be worth it but make no mistake, you are a number and not a customer with them.

Oh, they understand PERFECTLY. Remember, this is not just the store. This Also AT&T's phone support. The thing is I talked to one guy on their support, he said they should swap it out without the fee. I got disconnected, called back and got someone else. That person stated the same policy as the store...LOL.

What exactly is the issue with the phone?

Every place charges that. Every defective unit should be taken back to “manufacture” not seller. That’s why sellers charge a restocking fee cause they send it back to Apple if they have it returned to them. They gave you options for which you don’t have to pay anything. Sounds like ur blaming them cause she doesn’t live close to an Apple store to do the free option, but that’s really not there fault. I know it sucks getting a bad device in the first place. Crappy situation all
Around but a drive she must take!

This is just not accurate. I’ve swapped defective units through TMO, never charged a “restocking” fee. (If the phone is defective, the manufacturer covers the cost, not the consumer.)

I have always been charged and they tell
You to your face when you walk in Best Buy, ATT etc. and in the terms and conditions you sign online. It’s clearly stated like an above poster posted..

If someone is pushed to their last $100 while swapping out the phone for a few days, then they should question their choice to purchase a $1000 phone. I'd be more pressed to have savings to cover food, shelter and the basics if I am down to my last $100 -- not a high end cell phone...

Most of us pay monthly

The above poster posted conditions for a return, not a warranty swap.

That must be frustrating. Try chatting with someone, make sure they state that no fee will be charged and then save the conversation and take it to att. They shouldn’t charge you a fee. I just swapped mine out the other day and no problem. I also used to work for Best Buy mobile and I was aware of ATT policies. I hate when people give the wrong info. Also, ask to speak to a manager and escalate this issue. If you’re fed up with them just switch to Verizon, maybe they will offer you a better deal! Good luck.

This. I have replaced defective devices before within return period for Verizon and never once a fee of any kind. If you walk into best buy and buy a new TV and then get it home and it doesn't work. You take it back to best buy and they exchange it. They don't charge you a restocking fee for a defective item. There is no logical reason why OP's daughter can't exchange it at a ATT store without a restocking fee as it is defective and not going to be restocked..lol. A restocking fee is meant to protect the retailer from buyers remorse not a defective unit return.

AT&T will not swap out a defective XS without a $45 restocking fee (been 8 days). They claim all hardware issues have to handle by APPLE, which is ********. I could buy the phone from Best Buy and not have that issue. The problem is the phone was purchased for my daughter who is in a town with no Apple Store (College). To use Apple, I would have to put another $1100 hold on a credit card to have them ship a phone. I could always have her drive to the nearest Apple Store 100 miles away but that would be using more money that the $45 fee. That's BS.

The reason I don't want an $1100 hold on my credit card......is the last time I did something like that, it didn't go well.

So because the options that AT&T offered you are not to your liking, "they suck. Leave them..."? Wow. Pretty interesting 'take' on the matter, IMO. As you say, you could buy the phone from Best Buy... but you didn't... you actively chose AT&T... so now you are forced to deal with the options they gave you...

You made a choice and now are not happy with your options. Not sure what to tell you...

Not sure that you want to hear this, but you are simply a number (and a monthly payment) to all of the wireless carriers... not just AT&T... they care significantly more about your money than they do about you.

Honestly, there is nothing more frustrating to me than people giving wrong information. I personally don’t think a company sucks, I think their employees training sucks and their employees are not aware of their own policies. That being said, not too long ago something similar happened to me. I was told my upgrade fee was going to be waived, then I go to att and they tell me that they would charge me $30 to upgrade! I don’t care if I have to pay a fee, I’ll pay it! But be upfront with your fees and policies! I was at the store for 30 minutes going back and forth with the manager, finally someone was smart enough to check the notes and look at my work discount and they realized I do get my upgrade fee waived! People are just not constant with the info they give AND they don’t care enough to check for more than they think they know!

I worked in wireless for 5 years and i was always aware that the carriers policy is if the devices is defective and you return it within 14 days. There is no restocking fee.

He is not complaining about the options he was given, he’s complaining that they’re not being constant with their policies. He even called them already and he keeps getting mixed info.

Exactly. It's not normal to think that it is ok to be charged a restocking fee for a defective device. It's not being restocked. It's defective. I don't understand why it is so hard to understand. From consumer reports "At many retailers, restocking fees are allowed as long as the fee is clearly disclosed and as long as it isn’t charged if you’re returning an item because of a defect or missing part, or because it wasn’t what you ordered".

They didn’t give him any options that made sense.

Welp, I don’t believe the OP made a choice assuming the product would be defective. Nor should a restocking fee be charged for a defective device.

And yea, I’m sure they all treat folks as numbers. But you are reminded of it constantly with AT&T.

I have no idea why the OP just doesn't call Apple, set up a return. The phone is defective. Send the phone to Apple, they send a replacement back to him. No restocking fee. It's under warranty with Apple. Why he is being so stubborn and continues to deal with AT&T is beyond me. He has multiple choices, and refuses to listen to any of us.
