They charge the fee regardless. She is just trying to swap out the defective phone. I put AppleCare on the phone. She could drive 90 miles to the close AppleStore, but I don't want her doing that.
AT&T will not swap out a defective XS without a $45 restocking fee (been 8 days). They claim all hardware issues have to handle by APPLE, which is ********. I could buy the phone from Best Buy and not have that issue. The problem is the phone was purchased for my daughter who is in a town with no Apple Store (College). To use Apple, I would have to put another $1100 hold on a credit card to have them ship a phone. I could always have her drive to the nearest Apple Store 100 miles away but that would be using more money that the $45 fee. That's BS.

The reason I don't want an $1100 hold on my credit card......is the last time I did something like that, it didn't go well.

They gave you choices. Apple deals with all hardware issues. Don’t like it leave.

Yes it is gone till it comes back. So if i have $1200 in my account, I only have $100 to spend till it comes back. You know banks, could take a week. I’m just saying I couldn’t afford not having that for a week...

But what he can do is as soon as they put a hold on it, call bank and tell them to release it and they will.
No offense, but if someone has $1,200 in their bank account yet has a $1,000+ cellphone, he or she might want to reconsider their priorities?

Anyway, just to update....I chatted with ATT online customer service. 4 different agents...lol. Each said there shouldnt there shouldn’t be a fee for a defective phone. However, none of them could authorize a phone shipment, it seems. The 2nd CSR gave me a number for their “Best Support”. You want to know who that number connected to? APPLE...lol. The final person I talked with was Tech Support and that person put notes on the account so my daughter can go to the store where she is at, and exchange the phone without the fee. We will see if the store gives her grief.

Yes...it is only $45, but it’s the principle of the whole thing.

like a few others said it's a policy Apple has with ALL the carriers not just AT&T
I think this policy went into effect sometime between the iPhone 5s and 6 because i remember replacing my iphone 5s with t-mobile all the time until one day they told me I would have to do it with Apple since it was under warranty with Apple not TMobile.

why didn't you get insurance? if so you'd be able to replace it for free and have your new device the very next day

also... your child will live with not having a cell phone for a few days while away at college. if not, your child has bigger issues than a broken cell phone.

ATT- up to 14 days Device restocking fee: up to $45. Apple devices: No restocking fee if device is returned unopened.
https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/returnpolicy.html

Verizon- A $50 restocking fee applies to all wireless device returns and all wireless exchanges (excluding Hawaii).
https://www.verizonwireless.com/one-support/return-procedure/

Tmobile- Within 14 days. [T]he restocking fee is $50 for “smart phone” and "wearable devices" with SIM cards, which are high-end phones and wearable devices that are designed for Web and social media use in addition to standard phone features such as voice and text messaging; and for all other devices
https://www.t-mobile.com/templates/popup.aspx?passet=ftr_ftr_returnpolicy

We can pretend in fantasy land that ATT sucks or accept that is the policy for ALL carriers.

Apple will exchange it in store for free, or putting a hold on your credit card until the old device is returned. You never spend any money, it is a hold on free credit. Or simply bring it to a store if that's not acceptable.

Carriers don't do free hardware swaps/exchanges for Apple hardware. That is Apple's instructions as it's their hardware.
apple will return the phone if you ordered through them without restocking fee. Talk to support get it sent to you on and email. I plan on taking mine back this week. Its on the att next plan ordered through apple app not att's site.

If you only have $1200 in your account, you shouldnt be using a $1000 phone.

Oh we are talking difference of cards. I get what ur saying. Just some of us can’t take a $1100 hit is all I mean, debit or credit. But that’s not ATT fault, he is just in a crappy situation and ATT is not at fault here. You never do exchanges with seller always manufacture

It's a hold on a credit card, as I said, people who can afford $1000 phones usually have very high credit limits. A $1000 hold on a credit card for 3-4 days isn't really a "hit".

Finances are less stressful when you dont carry debt and utilize less than 30% on credit. It may be a slow process but well worth it.

Right, that's what we all keep saying. OP's family member doesnt want to go 90 whole minutes to the Apple store to remedy this, or let Apple put a hold on a credit card; no fees. But expects ATT to swap it in store for free because that is convenient and not be charged their very clearly stated carrier fee when it's very likely Apple who doesnt want them swapped in carrier stores (and carrier contractually bound).

I think 99.5% of us are saying the same thing here.

I just gotta say the hold is a hold. I live in a rural area and do all my Apple dealings online, no issues. The hold is on a credit card and I don't even notice it, I don't think it even shows up if I looked at the credit card website. All that said. you have a 90 minute solution seems pretty easy to me.

Finally and I know I am an A%$hole up front. Why would the OP buy a $1400 phone and then whine about a brief hold on a card???? This is not an ATT issue (I don't like ATT either) it is an whiny OP issue.

Um....Learn to read. It's not 90 miles...which is more than 90 mins. And no, I do not want a 19 year girl going to a city she is not familiar with by herself. Sorry, She is not there yet. LOL....some of you have no comprehension. AT&T has no policy for a $45 fee for a DEFECTIVE phone with 14 days. I have verified this. The store is going to swap it out after the Note in the system by the Tech at ATT. Also, ATT store reps are just CLUELESS. There were calculating the 14 days from the Pre-Order date, Not when it was delivered: 9/21.

No..it is the PRINCIPLE of the issue. The fee doesn't exist for a defective phone within 14 days. You have uninformed employees quoting a non-existing policy. That is the point.

You understand that att is only providing the service, correct? I have been an att employee for the last 10 years and there policy on defective units with Apple devices has always been the same(taking it to the Apple store) it has never been any different. If it’s a Samsung device or any other device it would have been handled in store. Even the paper work that shows your next agreement says it needs to be taken to the Apple store. That’s your agreement. You signed it. By the way, that’s the agreement Apple made with att, not the agreement att made with Apple.
Consumer laws protect the customer by allowing them to return defective products to the point of sale. That there's a mystery agreement between Apple and AT&T is irrelevant as you never bought from Apple. You simply remind the sales associate to provide a full refund per state law or you file a case with your state's AG office of consumer affairs. As part of that, also inform the sales manager that you will sue them personally in small claims court for full refund plus costs. That quickly get their attention.

You probably payed taxes on that amount so it's probably closer to 70 bucks. But you're right to highlight what a deceptive company that AT&T truly are. They are scum.

I dont need to learn anything as I couldn't care less about your little vendetta with ATT.

And puhlease, this isn't going to downtown Detroit; 90 min or 90 miles who gives 2 craps. I certainly did for many international auto shows and hockey games before I was even in college in the late 90s. 19 year olds can go to foreign countries and die for our country. Man and I thought my parents too overprotective at 19....

We get it, you want it your way when you say how you say and they "suck" if not. Definitely not wasting more time on this sh*t show thread.

I has an ATT S7 that arrived overnight and day 3 it was dead. ATT would not advance exchange. They aren’t customer friendly. They aren’t Apple.

So yes, avoid them like plague.

72 yrs old don’t drive and not about to spent better part of 4 hrs plus along with costs traveling and inconvenience of their store. Better to use GoPhone SIM or there is Verizon I think.

Are you a 19 year old girl? Do you know her personality ? Not all 19 year olds are the same.

Don't know else to tell you. You can go to an ATT store and talk to them yourself.

I know the ATT Policy sucks. But, the Provider gave you options. Just bring the unit to an Apple Store(Which apparently is 90min?) or Chat with Apple to do this by Mail. I'm sure she can live without a phone for a couple Days or Weeks. I've been an AT&T Customer for 12 Years now and NEVER had issues with them with any Phone I've had since I switched over to them.

This whole Temper Tantrum about a measly $45 Restocking fee is Nonsense. Either Take it apple and avoid that fee or Pay up. Simple.

By the way, Best Buy, Sprint, T-Mobile(Regardless of what people on this forum tell you they haven't, I know T-Mobile does this from a Past return on an iPhone 8+), Verizon, etc.. all have restocking fees in their Agreement/Policy.

AT&T only charge restocking fee if you "RETURN" within the 14 days.

No restocking fee if you "exchange" a defective device for another one.

I've done this a few times. Maybe the OP got a bad or lazy rep.

I think the OP was trying to return, not swap or exchange.

And you would be wrong. You can try this yourself. Go by an ATT store. They cannot return a defective iPhone phone with the fee in the 14 days. You can return Samsung, LG etc.... They will read u a letter stating the policy with IPhones. They will put it on Apple. The Reps will tell you they cannot even issue a credit ti waive the fee.

What a mess, OP. I understand their restocking policy, but in your case, it’s a defective phone and they should exchange a defective item without any charge to you. Keep us updated on what your daughter was able to do.

I agree, but for other reasons. When they came out with data saver or whatever it was called. It was an opt out and not an opt in. So they basically flipped the switch on for everyone betting that a good chunk of people wouldn't notice or hear of this. Great way to help your network out AT&T! When this happened I canceled 4 lines and dumped Direct TV as well. Trash company. In some cases I have had the unfortunate luck to try all 4 of the main carriers in the states, they all have their pros & cons. But T-MO has served me best for all around experience.

You cancelled 4 lines because of a feature ATT rolled out that you were completely aware of how to turn off?
